Having Multiple of a Limited Head Sculpt?

So you ever like a head so much you feel like you could have more than one in your group? I've been thinking about this a lot because I don't feel like I see it too often, with the exception of maybe DDH-01s, and they're standard and all.

I have 2 9S heads and I'm currently debating a third...lol. Which is what brought this topic on. I admit I'm feeling a little guilty about. On one hand, I have multiple types of faceup style that I like on this head, so owning more than one lets me have that option. But on the other hand, I can't help but feel like I'm somehow being too greedy doing that? 😥 I didn't feel too bad about the second head because it was a fixer-upper situation and I know not everyone is willing to do "repair" work. But this third head...there's nothing wrong with it(possibly), I just like the faceup it has.

I guess at the end of the day, I know this is kind of silly and I should just buy dolls I like just because I like them, but I'd love to hear if anyone else finds themselves in this situation!

One of my buddies has 3 or 4 2B heads, so it's definitely not just you. I've got 3 Smartdoll Eiji heads myself (2 milk with faceup, 1 tea custom), which are rare and definitely in demand, even though they're not strictly considered limited.

I don't see anything wrong with it, personally, sometimes you just like a sculpt! Even if they're limited, it's not like you're hoarding them just to create a shortage or anything like that.

I want to own multiple Kikuchi Makoto and Mizuno Ami heads.

two Shino's, three NS Sabers, two White skin Sabers, Two Miku's ... granted some of those are due to character versions (Blue, nero, Neu Bleu - Base Miku, Snow Miku)

The second shino was sort of a bidding accident (second was a complete set, while the first a wigless one), turned one into a suigintou mild custom, and the other then stuck around since nobody wanted to buy it.

Did debate a second Maromalo (mashiro mito) when they a bit more cheaper just to make the cibi-malo... A second melty was at one point in consideration since I thought that was the best out of the Tony based designs.

Was considering another Millhiore for a Ciel no Surge Ion/Yuuki custom ... but still wanted a stand alone milly because dog days was sort of a hoot at the start.

Also was considering a second Haruhi for a megumin mild custom, but as megumin is getting her own thing will have to see about that one.

Emilia is a bit of a sore subject... id like the new edition faceup better as an emilia, yet I do like how the first one works with darker wigs as a stand alone thing.

the planned dupes were put on hold because funding issues, and as inflation goes will have to see if I'll ever get back to them.

So yea... it happens more or less...

Id say it all depends on the circuimstances. If there are no shinenigans involved in the aquisitions, then id say go for it... then again if you start getting into the teens in numbers, there might be other problems to consider...

I’m curious why you would choose Millhiore in particular for Ion. And I’m surprised to see someone else on here who knows about Ciel Nosurge!

I think there is nothing wrong at all with owning multiple of the same sculpts, even if they are limited 😄 If they make you happy, you deserve to keep them around! 

As most others have said, I don't think there's anything wrong with having multiples. I have two DC-H-24 heads as well as two DDH-03s, although neither are limited aside from 24 being a DC exclusive. I also have plans for a second saber and maybe another santa alter... and maybe another Asuna (I have titania ver, but I want the first ver) if I can ever find her decently priced.

The outfit not quite Polar Memories, but you probably get where I am going with that (one of the key visuals they made a tapestry out of), but that mish-mash combo sort of made my choise of Milly for Ion.

as to knowing about Ciel no surge, I suppose anybody with enough of Ar Tonelico fanboy/girlism would appreciate it, as I think it has some of the last true HymnOS songs (I get it ... Origa was a thing when Ar no Surge came out, but just Russian as Hymnos? ... really?), and the background lore behind it... too bad you need to A) Own a Vita, and B) know japanese to an extent, and the production values being what they were on occasion (They could have at least normalized the audio between story patches for Ion's responses in casual day to day mode)... but still rather unique as to how you rebuild Ion's memories and they come back to life after being broken in the beginning.

... and then they threw it sort of under the bus to make Ar no Surge ... but thats for another rant.

That does make me feel a lot better about it! Glad to hear about your friend and their 2B group too lol! Sometimes I find it funny that I want three 9S heads before I want one 2B, but her sculpt just doesn't catch me in the same way, I guess! And with Eiji, he definitely almost feels limited! It's a shame that he's not more available.

For some reason, having multiple of Miku didn't cross my mind! I did want a Sakura Miku at some point myself and it never occurred to me that I already have one with my Snow Miku. 😆 And yeah, if I end up with more than 5 of one head, someone please stop me! At that point it becomes like a clone army...

I feel like I'll cap out at 3. I have my current one, who leans into more of an anime-style faceup, the second one which I plan on modding and making him my most "game accurate" 9S, and the third I'm thinking of bringing home has a more BJD-style faceup that I appreciate too. Then I hopefully will be satisfied!

I think deep down I know this is the right answer! Sometimes I get caught up in the thoughts of "I have multiple when some people who want this sculpt don't even have one". But at the same time, I know they're extremely cherished in my home. So in that way, I do "deserve" to have them around!

The face is a bit dated, but with the wig and outfit, I could see it working. Ion is the one character I wish Azone/Volks would make a doll of (more so Azone for a more faithful reproduction).

I feel like the three Mikus don’t count since the faceups are so wildly different between the three. Unlike the other two, Sakura Miku even has flesh skin IIRC.

To address the topic of the thread, I don’t know that I’d ever get multiples of a limited sculpt, but I’ve definitely considered getting DDH-09 M02 in both tan and semi-white.

weeeeell... considering that picture is seven and a half years old now, so I've been sitting on that idea for that long. Personally I dont see Milly as being too dated apart from the lips being perhaps a bit simple. ... then again I have models from 2005 in my collection so there is that as a comparison.

But as for a collab office, im in camp volks because azone outfits have been a dissapointment in one way or another recently (at least compared to what they used to make back in the late 2000's), the second enma ai's seifuku being a fairly bad execution to be honest.

But im guessing if there ever is a Gust collab with any doll company it would still most likely be of the Atelier series, probably Rorolina Fryxell (or Rorona for short), since thats what gave them a boost in sales, although its been a steady downhill from there... to the point where even I gave up on trying to complete Lulua.

I don't have funds for it, but I'd definitely have more than one Mashiro if i could

A bit off topic, but there's a couple of iconic Lego sets I have boxed versions of. For example I've hoarded a Seinfeld set to make on the show's 50th anniversary, as I figure my made one will be very dusty and aged by then.

Finnleo honestly has a point bringing up all those times Volks has used the same "limited' head for multiple releases and even characters; in fact a lot of the time they use the same head for characters in the same series, so honestly Volks themselves implies that it's kind of expected that someone would own multiple of the same limited head. In addition to the infamous numbers of Sabers and Mikus, both Moe and Natsuku have the same head, and so do Nanoha and Fate. (I myself have  both Nanoha and Fate.)

So if even Volks has this precedent that someone will likely own two (or more) of the same head, limited or otherwise, then why not own two or more of the same head even if they're not part of a set? Conversely, why not do new faceups or even mod limited heads? They're your dolls! It admittedly took me a while to feel like it was okay for me to take that level of ownership over my dolls, but now that I have I have no regrets. My Miku has a custom faceup, my Kirito and Smart Doll Eiji Kai heads both have modified eye holes plus custom faceups, and I feel so much more satisfied with them now that I've made them look and feel how I actually want. Fate and Nanoha, I do love their default face ups, but their blush and lip shading has faded a bit over hte years, so they may get a light refresher soon. Regardless. . . they're mine, imma do what I want lol. 

As for the 01 head being a common one to have multiples of. . . it was the very first open eyed DD head released, and it's proven ripe fodder for some WILD customizations. So between what good modification bait it's proven to be, and how long it's been available, it kind of makes sense that's one people have accumulated over time.  (Well, except @baldylox, who just flat out loves that head, so he's got extra reason to have a whole army of 01s lol)

I somehow never even realized that Nanoha and Fate had the same face! And I feel that, my current 9S already has a custom faceup, the second head will be getting a eye closing mod and custom faceup whenever I get good enough with the wood burning tool to finish that project. And...I decided to go ahead and order the third today! 😆

Thanks everyone for helping me feel better about it! After watching that listing for a bit, and timing lining up for me, I decided to go for it. Hilariously, I actually even had a dream about getting him last night(though the dream was that I could not get shoes on him for whatever reason?), so clearly my brain wants him home with me after all lol. 😅 Mandarake says he has smoke smell and I really hope that isn't too hard to get out...I do seem to bond most with dolls I need to "fix" though, so I'm sure it'll only make me like him more.
