Making a flexible tail?

Recommended Posts

bananaaether

I hope this is an okay section to post this!

I'm really really curious what y'all think this tail is made out of:

I don't want to rip-off the artist or anything like that, but I have a completely different tail design in mind and I've been trying so hard to find a good material that isn't too super thick, but will also be really posable without ending up all kinked up after it's been posed. I also want something where I can choose lots of colors for it. What do you suppose this is made out of? Or do you think there's other good alternatives for making a thin posable doll-scale tail? Do any of your dolls have tails that you want to share photos of? Thanks in advance!

Coated wire is my guess! You'd have to make the attachment point and the tip out of epoxy, but the main part looks like coated wire.

I've been thinking about making Feloya, my anthro Sphynx, a tail out of Toy Skeleton (https://paraboxshop.jp/index_en_jpy_214-218.html) and an extra body stocking, since she'll be living in one anyway.

Coated wire! I'll look into it! Thank you!

Ooooh, I'm really curious to see how that tail turns out! Be sure to post WIPs! I've been really curious about toy skeletons for a while, especially for things like plushes, but I've never used them before.

They're the same thing that Danny uses for the spine in Smartdolls - really nice, flexible, and durable from the looks of it! The hard part is gonna be getting the body stocking to look right - I'm not very satisfied with my sewing skills, so I hope it'll be durable enough.

I actually made some similar type of tale months ago for my Deviluke girl.

An easy way to accomplish that is using a triple iron wire and twist it with a small hook on the end. I designed my version in three parts that when necessary the wire can be replaced easily.

I created a Smartdoll joint that fits in the back of the Smartdoll. For the tale itself I used a fishtank hose and wired it. And the tip is formed as a spade (from the standard poker cards). Two tail tips is also an excellent door stopper for heavy doors. ðŸ˜‚
