DD Snow Miku arm broken. Will super glue be enough?

Recommended Posts

Viola

So my heart sank when her lower arm fell off and I realised it wasn't at the detachable part. All I can guess is it was caused by repeated bending of the arm putting strain on it over the years and I needed to be more careful. From the outside I had no idea it was happening.

Is super glue gonna be enough to fix this? I see epoxy glue recommended but there seems to be different types for various purposes. Would something like Gorilla brand epoxy be fine, or would I need to get something that's specifically for plastic welding like JB plastic weld? The Permatex brand isn't readily available here. I'll get it if it's really necessary but would rather avoid buying it for this one job and having the rest go to waste if possible.

I'm also a little confused about which frame this is. I know she's a DD base body 3 but there have been changes and updates since this release? From what I can tell the correct arm replacement would be DDIII-A-01-SW that's sold out on the Volks site. So this would be the correct part, right? http://us.sk-coolcat.com/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=kss_15

That should be the correct part, and I would go with that over glue. Your alternative is to buy an f3 body, but until they announce the MDD body replacement, I would hold off on body upgrades. It's possible that Volks has a new body / frame in the works, but we don't know for certain yet.

Try to grip the arm at the shoulder or elbow when you pose her. That should help reduce stress on the parts.

If you are feeling brave, and have access to a Dremel or other mini drill, you could add a pin between the two pieces to give it more stregth when glueing it back together.

Amusingly my Beat has a match tucked with epoxy into the groove of the leg inner pieces when it snapped spontaniously quite close to getting her, and has held up so far.

but in this case I would suggest something more substantial reinforcement like metal.

Okay, I will buy the part. Thank you for the responses 🙏
I've never used a drill, so I'm not confident I can do that lol

Pinning is a reliable method used by modelers, and there are videos on YouTube showing how to do it. That said, if you don't line it up right, you won't get a second chance. Honestly though, the part you have is a total loss as is, so as long as you already have a hobby drill like a pin vice or Dremel, and some sturdy wire cutters, all you're out is the price of a metal rod and some epoxy. You can still buy the coolcats part if the attempt fails. Up to you, but unless you have to buy the tools, I don't see a downside to @finnleo's suggestion. Just pull the remains of the post out of the elbow joint before trying so you don't damage the lower arm / elbow.

So the last issue was fixed, but now there is a break in an even worse place...

spacer.pngspacer.png

Coolcat sells replacements for the shoulder joint but that part seems to be intact, the upper torso frame itself has broken somehow. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for this?

This seems completely incompatible with the other parts https://dollfie.ec.volks.co.jp/item/4518992421575.html
Is the entire f3 internal frame not for sale?

Unfortunately no, you can get a third party frame from http://mddasatyan.blog.fc2.com

But this isn't necessarily cheaper than a new f3 body. That said, they will likely release an DD f3 2.0 in the near future, so there is that to consider.

Volks still has DD3 semiwhite unitorsos that come with the older inner bits.

Oh thank goodness, that would save me a lot of money, but now I'm torn. Now I'm paranoid of things breaking again, are the newer frames more sturdy?

Near future as in within the year, or do we not know yet?

There are a few improvements especially around the inner shoulders. the way the hips work will however drive people mad. The thing to keep in mind upgrading to F3 is that if you still want to keep using Snowy's outfit you'll need to buy the smaller bust piece since the base bodies come with a M-bust by default. so that adds about 3300 yen to the base body price of ~35000 yen

But I understand your worry about concecutive failures and fix everything in one go.

As to the possible DD F3/2.0 ... I personally dont see it being as revolutionary as the MDD F3/2.0 was, since that included fixing a lot of problems that were related to using the original MDD bodyshell with the first MDD F3.   I could see the MDD F3/2.0 upper torso concept with the O-ring neck height adjustment probably beeing a backwards compatible upgrade though.

Oh, these outer parts are incompatible with the f3 frame too? Or the bust piece specifically?

We don't know, but I think it was hinted that it will be used in an upcoming doll, possibly Miku NT.

The MDD 2.0 has new bust pieces that are notched for the neck frame. Not sure if they differ in any other way though. Given the way the back seems to bend more, they might be different in other ways to support that.

I was actually a bit of a muppet. the bust from your old DD3 body should work with the current F3 body but there might be a slight color miss-match due to age.

None of the internal plastic bits are compatible between the DD3 and DD-F3. in terms of outer softer pieces, as mentioned the bust is the same (I think..?), but at least the shins are slightly different, along with the feet. the arms outer pieces might be the same, the hands work across all the versions.

Okay, poor Miku will just have to go without an arm for a bit while I give it some thought. Thank you both again for the help.

I say go with Superglue and reinforce it with epoxy. Poor Miku deserves to feel whole again. I would also sand the part that goes into the forearm a little to prevent excessive stress on the part.

Where are you located?  I have a bunch of random inner frame parts like you need here so I might be able to assemble one for you as a replacement for the broken one you have now.  It might not be the same color but since you won't see any of it from outside, that doesn't really matter.

Let me know where you are and we can work something out for your Miku so she can be whole again.  :)

Thank you for the very kind offer, but I'm in the UK so I wouldn't want to trouble you with having to ship from the US.

I'm not worried about that.  PM me your name and address and I'll send you one free of charge.  I know how sad it is to have a broken girl.  Waiting for repairs sucks so if I can help shorten that timeframe then I will.

Hope to hear from you soon!
