Cat proof doll displaying?

Recommended Posts

sunlightandtea

Hello all!

I’m considering putting my doll on display in my office again but now I have a very sweet cat to contend with. She’s young and very playful and active, and while I intend to keep the office shut for a few reasons I’d still like to make sure the kitty can’t lick or ingest anything from the doll which might harm the kitty. I just have the one doll and the one kitty.

So, how have you all displayed your dolls and protected them from your cats (or other fuzzy friends)? I’d also love to see pics of your display and your dolls.

Thanks!

Hi! I don’t own any pets so I display my dolls in the open on top of my dresser.

However I do own figures and I keep them in a glass cabinet to prevent them from getting dusty. Maybe you could consider getting one and displaying them there? It would need to be large to accommodate for the size of your dolls but thats the safest route I can imagine.

Ikea Billy bookcases are my go to because the shelves are very adjustable for different doll heights. They come with optional glass doors to keep kitties out :)

I looked after my sister's cat during covid. The horrible monster (as Towa calls her) knocked Towa over a couple of times. Eventually I put Towa on top of the washing machine, as the cat never went up there.

I don't think the cat was ever that interested in the doll, but Towa was easily knockable over when she was on my computer table.

My Dollfie doll family December 2024 😊. Towa believes they are 34 in number.

It sort of depends! Some cats seem really drawn to dolls, but mine have always largely ignored them. The most I get is them rubbing their cheeks against an outstretched hand or giving them a quick sniff - which is why I'm confident enough to display my dolls out in the open on my desk. (A bigger concern seem to be loose accessories. I had a belt lying around that I wasn't using - I actually had it tugged into a boot so it wasn't technically 'just lying around' on the table, but one of the kitties still nabbed it.)

Ikea Billy bookcases and Detolfs seem very popular for display purposes, but I've also looked into custom acryl display boxes before, although getting something that fits a DD will be kinda pricey. If you only have a MDD it would be easier. I think I once saw a picture here on the forums where someone put their MDD into an acrylic box meant to display shoes or something like that? The doll needed to be sitting to fit, but it worked!

Are there any good dollfie stands that would be stable enough in case a cat does bump into them? O:

Yes! Personally I use the Volks wooden doll stand saddle version, it’s extremely sturdy and works best for dolls wearing poofy-ish dresses so you can hide the stand up their skirt lol. No kitty has ever knocked it over! Yet.

I agree with using Volks stands to keep dolls from taking a tumble! They're very well constructed and are worth the price in my opinion. I use Volks' metal waist hold stands and secure the base to my shelves with c-clamps from the hardware store. We get a lot of earthquakes where I live and the metal stands have prevented all my dolls from falling to their doom since I started using them.

I have a young cat as well, and he thankfully hasn't been too interested in messing with my dolls. He mostly likes to nestle himself in between the dolls in my shelves, and sometimes chews on their hair lol. He was briefly a little too interested in my DD Y'Shtola's staff because of the dangling gems hanging off of it. I mitigated that by putting Shtola on a surface that's way too high for him to jump up on. If/when he figures out how to get up there, I'd probably put her staff back in storage to keep him from damaging it or ingesting any fragile parts.
