Head Base for Wig Maintenance or Styling

Recommended Posts

I have been wanting to style/fix some wigs but found that most suggest not fixing it on the doll directly but on something else. Especially if I am to be using something with a heating element to it.

Does anyone have any good suggestion on where to place the wigs that fit smart doll on to let you work/style them?

Since the Smart Doll wig size is 8.5 and the Obitsu 50-04 head takes 8 to 9 inch wigs, the Obitsu head would be one of your cheaper options as far as using a blank vinyl head goes...

*One thing to make note of is that as far as I'm aware, the smart doll head has more of an egg shape and the obitsu one has more of a spheroid shape to it. This means the wig could sit oddly but I'm not sure.

Maybe someone like @Tierparkzone who has both an Obitsu and a whackload of Smart Dolls can chip in here.

The second (and problably even cheaper option) is that on the Smart Doll website, you can find free STL files for various smart doll parts. Including blank heads, this means you may be able to procure a 3D printed smart doll head for maybe a few dollars or less.

I'm just suggesting these options as I'm assuming the primary concern is that you may damage the face-up of the doll should you be working with wig directly on the doll. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can get wooden wig display stands in a number of places:

https://www.dollmore.net/Product/Category/list/cid/491

https://legenddoll.net/goods-33812.html

and typing 'bjd wig display stand' into eBay finds cheaper ones, as well. I know I saw the plastic rack-shaped ones somewhere, too, but I can't for the life of me find them any more.

A lot of people will use styrofoam balls stuck on the ends of sticks, too - the shape isn't quite right but they're cheap and easy to replace if they get damaged. You can stick the other end of the stick into a styrofoam plate and it'll stay upright for styling.

Thank you both for the suggestions! This gives me so many options and now I know what to be searching for.

I will go for the cheaper route for now just to get me started!

SmD heads have a slightly smaller circumference than most DD heads and most 1/3rd scale Obitsu or Parabox heads. Combined with the fact that the original SmD wigs are super tight when they come out of the box, you'll have a hard time getting them onto anything but an actual SmD head (and even then it requires some wrangling).

If they have gotten a bit loose from being worn for a year or more, or if you're planning to make your own wigs for SmD from scratch and they don't need to be that tight, then yes, a comparatively cheap Obitsu or Parabox head could do the trick. - But you'd still have to think of a way to prop it up.

Cotin Doll wigs come on plastic ball-pit balls to hold the shape during shipping/storage. - If you can track down some in the right size, that should also work. But again mounting could be tricky.

I second the styrofoam ball, you can stick that onto anything and it should hold the wig well. If necessary you can add a strip of velcro or a silicone cap to better keep the wig in place and/or adjust for the head size a bit.
