Homemade shoe materials?

I've been thinking of making some shoes since I got too many dolls and not enough shoes. However, what materials are the best for it? I don't want to use pleather or any similar materials since it self destructs in a few years with no way to reverse it and completely unsalvageable unless it has a good quality fabric backing behind it. Another issue with materials is that it may not be fine enough to use as doll shoes, so what are some good options that you use for doll shoes, especially boots? If leather or fabric is being used, what are the best types that would be suitable for a doll?
