New Year Doll Resolutions?

Recommended Posts

Roserolls

Since the 2024 is approaching, I was wondering if anyone has some bad doll habits that they want to break or resolutions to make for the new year! I'll go first:

  • Stop buying blind box bjds when I don't love all of them or already have a favorite in mind! Whenever I see a set where I like all but one, I am always guaranteed to get that one. Additionally if I see a set that I like all of them, when it arrives I'm always like, "This is great!...But now I want this other one too." I need to learn to just go ahead and buy my favorite in an opened box version off Ali 🤦‍♀️
  • No more large dolls!!!! I got waaay more than I planned to this past year and my room does not have anymore reasonable display places. The desk I plan to buy soon will have an extra shelf above the table where I plan to put my AP, but there's no where else for large dolls to go. Even my imomo Ruby head will just have to float on a shelf until I figure something out. (I already have a feeling I'm not going to succeed on this one lol, especially if an AP Riko or J-type sculpt shows up again...) EDIT: lmao of course this happened, as soon as the AP I just bought shipped out, a tan J-type also mysteriously appeared on Mandarake, and of course I gave in immediately. Although, since this happened before the New Year I guess it doesn't count? Let's just go with that. 😅
  • No buying dolls when I don't like their default eyes/wig. No matter how much I try, I just can't visualize what other hair/eyes would look good on them and end up with a bunch of extra wigs that I don't like. Weirdly, this isn't really a problem when the doll comes without eyes or a wig.
  • Embrace the fact that I hate sewing and stop buying cloth to make doll clothes with. I have a whole duffel bag filled with scraps of cloth and fuzzy socks that I thought would make cute sweaters or whatever. I need to accept the fact that I do not have what it takes to be a doll seamstress and just try to work through my current stash.
  • Invest in higher quality clothes that I actually like the look and feel of. I used to buy whatever cheap cute-ish clothes I could find, but they would always look worse than the pictures and feel bad to the touch. I get more excited to redress my dolls when I actually like the clothes they'll be wearing
  • Stop buying dolls for a certain aesthetic when I KNOW that I'm just gonna default to lolita/jirai kei/pastel cutesy outfits anyway...when I got my Tinyfox Yi I was like, "She'll look great in dolly-kei! :D" LOL. LMAO, even. No idea how on earth I thought I was gonna make dolly-kei outfits with my lazy sewing skills lol.
  • Stop letting things get cluttered! This applies to everything in my life in general, but with dolls I also have the bad habit of not putting things away properly, so they just hang out on my desk or shelves forever and take up space. I also need to get better at regularly dusting my doll shelves too (HOW DO THEY GET SO DUSTY SO QUICKLY)

  • Taking more pictures and trying to invest in a proper camera, I'm getting real tired of the distortions that phone cameras come with
  • Keeping my impulse control in check, but it's hard if there are new nice outfits popping up and you have to dress boys in at least 4 different scales
  • Keeping it down with getting new bodies, because what is space? I'll focus on different heads to exchange for my two boys

  • Get a second 1/6 Obitsu doll. Most likely a Gretel27 + Obitsu 24 from Parabox.
  • More of an aspiration than a resolution: get an SmD Mirai. I know Danny does some questionable things, but I can't bring myself to like the sculpt style of DDs 😅
  • Take my dolls on hikes regularly for good photo opportunities and exercise. ...Which means I need to get a carry case of some kind.
  • I also need to work out what to do with leftover fabric. I originally wanted to make human sized clothes for myself, but making doll clothes is much more satisfying.
  • I have vague ideas about getting a Pureneemo S in fair skin and an XS girl in tan as models for smaller clothing sizes. I'm probably not going to be able to resist the tempation, tbh 😆

  • No more purchasing dolls! Stop filling a void whenever you see a doll for a good price! Save your money.
  • If you must purchase dolly stuff, limit it to $200 per month and focus on shoes/clothes/accessories
  • Take more pictures! And don't be scared to go out in public!
  • Either learn to sew or just give up and get the outfit. You know your skills won't match custom outfits!!
  • Please for the love of good sort all your doll stuff. Maybe get some plastic bins and label everything or you'll lose more things!
  • Don't be scared to be more detailed with your faceup artist. Get your moneys worth!

  • Set aside a small amount each month/every other month to spend on my girls on clothes and/or upkeep.
  • Practise faceups.
  • More photos! Try to be more thoughtful about them too outside of stories. Consider posing/lighting. Take time with it.
  • Dust shelves and girls once a week. Invest in some microfibre cloths.
  • Save up for the dolls you really want rather than settling for who's readily available. It's ok to wait and be patient for them to show.

  • Find my old BJD stuff from ages ago. I have such a collection of clothing and eyes and I don't wanna start from scratch!

  • Get a second 1/3 doll. I really want an androgynous doll in a semi-realistic style.

  • Begin sewing or creating clothing for my dolls again.

  • Begin creating 1/3 scale doll furniture!

  • Find the time and motivation to start photographing my dolls again!

  • Interact with the doll community more. Stop being so shy!! haha.

-Limit new dolls and work on the ones I already have or sell them. I got too many dolls and not enough space yet I'm not willing to part with any of them.

-Finish/start doll projects and make the little bits of clothes that some still need

-Clean up materials, supplies, and doll stuff.

-take more photos and make photo stories

-Draw them more and use them for drawing reference. literally have a bunch of dolls great for anatomy practice and i still haven't used them for that, despite me also having 2d faces which are perfect for referencing.

  • Stop assigning complex backstories to each of my dolls, I've found that I love them more as models/characters with just a little bit of story behind them than as fully written ocs with intricate backstories. I need to quit giving myself headaches obsessing over doll stories only to change them completely a month later...
  • Don't let FOMO trick me into getting a doll I don't really want! It's happened before, and now I'm still trying to sort out what to do with that doll...
  • Take more photos! I was looking back through my old photography from before I had Min, and I remember how much fun I had taking those pictures. I need to bring that energy back into my photoshoots and just enjoy taking pictures again!
  • Get/make more doll clothes, I feel like I don't have much variety at the moment.

This one about sewing! I have pattern books and have ideas to do some school uniforms. Tbh it actually sounds exciting to sew this January because I'm not busy like I was in the summer. Burnout killed my desire to be creative. Hope you can sew this year!

Maybe there's some good threads about doll accessory organizers. One box turns to two...

Also I feel a bit less guilty about being "that customer" with my face up because it's really beautiful and I'm glad I was picky for as much as I spent.

But for me, I wish I'd just get some new wigs and accept my style has slightly changed. And also let go of the stuff I don't use and decide if I really need to buy a new doll just because I have pretty SD clothes from my resin girl. 😅

Thanks everyone for sharing these! This really helps get a good perspective. 💙
