Displaying anime and semi-real/realistic together?

Recommended Posts

meteorite

I like to think of my dolls as all belonging to the same universe, so I want their sculpt style to be similar. But I might break that rule, as the only tan Obitsu 1/6 dolls available are anime style...

Do you guys display your semi-real and anime dolls together? Do you own both? What's your opinion on it?

Moved on to resin BJD

I don’t have any semi-real or realistic dolls, but if I did they would definitely be part of their own world separate to the others.

I’m super particular about this and have so much of a mental block about it that I can’t even think of my character dolls and my customs as being part of the same world, even though they’re all Dollfies.

Same for heads with painted eyes and rooted hair vs heads with inset eyes that take wigs, different scales and even different makers at times, so I totally understand if this is something that bothers you.

I'm sort of with Ragnamuffin on this. I haven't owned semi-real/realistic BJDs in a hot minute - but when I did, and I had a Dollfie at the same time, I would keep them separate. The same with DD's vs Pureneemos/tiny obitsu girls. Unless they're pretending to be a doll for the big girls, I wouldn't take photos with them interacting at all. They'd be displayed on different shelves - maybe in the same place, but at different heights to keep them separate.

At the end of the day, it's personal preference. You can display your dolls in whatever way you want to and makes you feel the most happy looking at them <3

I have semi-real dolls! I kinda also put them in random display setups because I don't know why lol! I don't know why but it works for me I guess...

Though my "semi-real" dolls are resin, I also planned to do this if I got Angel Philias anyway so I'll chime in as well. I separate my SDs from my DDs (physically on opposite sides of my room) and their stories are entirely separate as well. I think it really falls to preference, but the contrast between semi-real and anime is rather stark so it can be difficult to make them blend together.

I group mines by aesthetic/group, and the coherency is through clothing and styling not by their sculpt styles. However, certain groups do tend to lean anime and semi real, with one group being primarily anime and another that's mostly semi real. If you manage to give everyone a matching style, it won't stand out as much. Even if it does....it's your display and your dolls, do as you like.

I never thought about displaying them apart. Shisha (Anime Smartdoll Chitose multi) is currently on the same plate in the shelf as my 1/6 Tusken Raider and 1/6 Boba Fett. Also Ritz (Smartdoll semi real Transendence) is placed next to some other anime styled girls.
@onion37@

I do not see my resin girls as part of the same universe as the Smartdoll girls and Dollfies. Has more to do with the difficult posing of Number 29 (DZ black cat) and Serphien (DC Fuya)
That aside all my Dollfies and Smart Dolls do come from the same universe. I make no difference between styles. Only there backgrounds differ. One of my girls is a Devilukean and one is a Bount. They go all well together.

I suppose I do separate my dolls by style, but it's really more by the era when I purchased them than anything. My older dolls are mostly resin and relatively realistic, and they hang out upstairs in the bedroom, where the resin ones are safer. My newer dolls are more anime-style, and they're also the ones I use as sewing models the most frequently, so they hang out downstairs, where my sewing machine and my fiance's dolls are.

I have thought about purchasing a semi-real Smart Doll (especially a Pear girl), and I always picture them hanging out with my current dolls. They still seem pretty anime to me, especially with the animetic eyes they come with. I guess it's like how games like Fate/Grand Order and Arknights have several different artists draw characters, so sometimes they'll have wildly different art styles despite all existing in the same setting.

I was barbie dude in teen-age. At University I started with anime dolls (finally, since I wanted them since I was 11 or 12). Nowdays I like anime dolls but the semi-real smarties started to balance my taste. So for me, I would combine displaying both anime and semi-real and real if they are same scale.

Scale is for me main factor. Nothing else matters.

Usually no, but in this case, yes. My BJD collection is full of many different styles, but somehow the two times I owned an anime doll in resin, she always felt out of place. My Dollfies and SMDs all live on one shelving unit in my room, separate of my other dolls and figures. They're so aesthetically different that in the long run, I feel better having more of them as their own group.

The same logic applies with SMD. Now, there are plenty of mixed collections out there, and semi-real goes fine alongside anime. The Smart Doll team has taken precautions to ensure they're compatible across the board. However, after having a semi-real sculpt as my first SMD, I have to admit that they're not anime enough for my taste, and remind me more of the US doll sculpting style aimed at young children. I like them, but not for my personal collection.

Someone please stop me from eyeballing G05

I also have a lot of mental blocks regarding what kinds of dolls I get & them needing to relate to each other, but oddly style hasn’t been a point of contention? I think it’s because of how I set up my “lore”. In it, Len is 2B’s distant cousin lol. He’s also not human, so I can think of them all as different styles of robots, and then it makes sense. My Nier dolls also have anime style eyes which helps bridge the gap between styles.

The doll I tend to exclude is my 1/6 tiny fox. Maybe because I didn’t make him related to the others.
