DC-H-09 as a boy?

Hi all! I recently posted about getting my first gal, a Smart Doll Mirai, and she's absolutely perfect, but I'm already planning to get her a friend, in the form of a Dream Choice boy through a proxy in roughly two weeks or so, depending on what my next paycheck and the JPY/USD conversion rate looks like!

While deciding on what he'll look like, I've been looking at JadePixel's Dream Choice guide, and just cannot seem to shake the idea of how cute DC-H-09 with M04 would be as a feminine guy. I'd initially liked the idea of using M03 for the cute anime-esque blush lines, but then I saw that it had bright orange eyebrows and wasn't a fan, and decided on M04, haha.

I came across a few photos of people using some of the more feminine head sculpts for guys (DC-H-06 and DC-H-08 immediately come to mind), but I can't seem to find any photos of a Dream Choice DC-H-09 with the original faceup as a guy. It seems to be a popular choice as an unpainted option head! Especially for modding.

On that note, which eye size is best for DC-H-09? 20mm, 22mm, or 24mm? I really like the "F" type eyes, and would like to get them for him in either green or blue. And for those who've gotten a Dream Choice boy through SophieBabyBear's proxy, what was the final cost for you after all the conversion fees, shipping, and such? I have a rough idea from her price lists on her website, but I know it can vary.

I was about to say I was surprised you were having trouble because I always thought 9 one of the most popular heads for boys and then realised that I very rarely see them with default faceups too. So I tried to see what I could find, and it was weirdly difficult (although Twitter search doesn’t work half the time lately so that could also be a factor 😔)

I agree that M04 would look good as a boy, although I haven’t been able to find an example of it yet. I did find a M03 boy though. Conveniently with the certificate in view so you can see they chose 22mm. They look a bit big to me though so I think 20 would be good too, although it does depend on the style of eye and how much white you want to show. (Although I also like the way those smaller pupil eyes (the ones intended for DCH25/26look on dolls even with larger eye holes cos I think they have some character to them)

The DD-H-09 is an awesome and extremely versatile head. It's also a head that doesn't look out of place next to Smart Doll anime heads.

I think I've seen only the M02 used on a boy body so far (probably because it has the fewest lashes painted on), but depending on what you're going for, the M04 should work just as well.

Point of note about the M04: The darkest color on the faceup is a dark brown, so on Tan skin it tends to look a bit faded. Be aware of that in case you were planning to go for a Tan boy. On Flesh or Semi-White, the faceup looks awesome.

I have two H-09 with Dream Choice makeup, both of them styled as girls, but maybe they can still work as reference: my M01, my M02.

My 09 girls all use 22mm eyes. The H-09 is too small to properly fit 24mm eyes.

I definitely want him to look good next to Mirai, so it's good that the 09 head mingles well with Smart Doll anime sculpts!

Good point about the paint! I've seen a few Tan DC-H-08s that look like their mouths aren't even painted due to the paint coloring. I'm thinking I'll go with Flesh.

Your girls actually help a lot! In fact, I think your M01 girl has sold me on giving my guy green eyes! The 22mm eyes look great on them both, too!

I'll echo what the others have said so far, DDH09 is like the head for boys in the faceup and modding scene (I have one myself), but I prior also had never seen one used prepainted before.

As far as eye size goes, mine uses 18mm even, haha. But his eyes are modded to be a bit more narrow and I prefer eyes with quite a bit of the white showing, so that might not be the way to go for a 09 that is not modded.

Your Fuuta is absolutely adorable, he's definitely a favorite doll of mine to see photos of on here. 09 suits him so well! 

I definitely want my guy's sclera/white to show a bit. I'm not a fan of the eyes that ate almost completely iris, haha. A doll can go from cute to a touch spooky just based on how much white shows in their eyes. I think it might be why I'm not the biggest fan of some earlier Dollfie Dreams?

Aww, thank you, that does mean a lot to me!

Very much agreed though, I feel the lack of white in the eyes makes a lot of dolls look ... well, very "doll like". I don't know, I just prefer a more life-like and animated look. I have to admit, I seldom like Volks factory faceups in general, they feel a bit stiff to me? For some more recent ones they have adopted some of the features that I like so much in artist heads, for example eyeliner that leaves a bit of space to indicate the waterline, more use of different colors besides just black etc. But they hold back too much with the shading and blush for my taste, haha.

Scrolling through the unread posts and this thread (and Mandarake) personally came for my wallet.

Now I've got plans to make an 09 M01 into my longtime Rune Factory crush, Arthur. 😆
