meteorite Posted February 20, 2024 How do you decide which clothes suit your doll? Do you have a specific image in mind for them? My poor SmD Mirai is sitting on my desk in her underwear because I can't find an outfit that sparks my motivation to sew. With my 1/6 dolls it's easy - they wear beautiful lolita fashion which is too impractical and costly for me to wear every day. flora Posted February 20, 2024 Oh I kinda go with what I like to wear as well. But I agree, lolita is special occasion but dolls are always living their best frilly life!😂 I haven't sewn anything in awhile but I will probably be going with a color theme that matches my doll's character (Barbara from Genshin Impact, so white and blue like her two outfits in the game). If you have an eye color you could also match that as well if you're stuck on fabric choices. You might decide what style you want by googling a list of fashion styles and look at photos and see what inspires you. Then keep going down the rabbit hole of that fashion. There's a wiki with fashion styles but I don't remember what it's named. I know I looked up cottage core to get ideas of how it's different than mori girl. Anyway, good luck with your sewing project! RozenGermain Posted February 20, 2024 I recommend looking for patterns for the doll you want to sew for, whether to crib from the pattern directly or mod it, though with the kids of outfits I like to make I usually make the pattern myself with some references in regards to specific styles (I've been googling hanfu patterns for my DZ Yin-Long's clothes, since I want him to wear a fantastical take on that clothing style). While SmDs do have artists who make patterns tailor made for them, I believe regular old DD patterns will work for SmDs as well due to the scaling and similar body type (at least for non-pear SmDs). I also suggest maybe looking through Pintrest boards or Google Image Search for something to spark ideas. Or... you can just buy clothing made for the doll if you need something in the meantime.... But If you want to sew them yourself, I suggest thinking of the doll's personality and what would suit them best. Whether you want her dress style to reflect her character or you want to make it a case of "gap moe". There are a plethora of ways to get inspiration with doll clothes, I just thought of a few of them.... 😅
Stupid_Hoomun Posted February 20, 2024 A lot of the time I will have an idea of which style I want to dress a particular girl in. If there is nothing in the doll wardrobe that suits her she will usually get a random outfit and I will hit the online market places looking until I find something for her. Nearly all my dolls have at least one outfit that is their own that they wear the majority of the time although some of them have 2 or 3 outfits. Licenced characters usually wear the outfit they come with and rarely get changed.
Xiongmao Posted February 20, 2024 I think dolls are just like smaller versions of hoomans really. You don't really know if an outfit will work until you try it on. I didn't think the Alice look would work on Yoru, but blonde Thorn Princess exceeded all expectations. My doll family is quite large now, but gradually I'm finding everybody is settling on outfits they will want to wear forever. 3 My Dollfie doll family December 2024 😊. Towa believes they are 34 in number.

I think so too. Sometimes the plans you have for them just don’t work out and they end up with a completely different style than you envisioned. I initially planned to turn my Anastasia into a fairy queen—bought all these fancy outfits and elf ears and butterfly accessories, the whole nine yards. But for some reason it just didn’t stick, and now, a little over two years after acquiring her, I’m starting to get a feel for her style. In the end, she’s probably going to have more of a modern uptown girl style, and while still fancy, is a far cry from the fantasy theme I wanted for her when I first got her 😂 Other times, you know right away—my Alice Kuonji was always meant to wear dark academia fashion and I can’t imagine her in anything else!
MoiBakaDesu Posted February 21, 2024 As all my dolls are the same two existing characters I just go with what goes along well with their style of fashion in canon. Okay, with some artistic liberty of what I think would look good on them, because one of the boys doesn't have a very impressive track record of fashion.
meltychoco_BJD Posted February 22, 2024 My dolls are also specific characters (and any future ones will be too) so I try to have a few specific aesthetics each of them use, so that clothes shopping is easier. I just choose the aesthetics based on what looks best on them, usually based on hair/eye colour and general vibe. My choices are also super biased to what I personally like. I guess you could make a list of the fashion styles you enjoy the most, (whether its looking at it or sewing it or both) and then assign 1-3 to each doll? Sort of compartmentalizing it like that. 1 ☆⋅⋆ ───FIND ME ON─── ⋆⋅☆ DoA | Twitter | Instagram ☆⋅⋆ ────── ⋆⋅☆
Tira Posted February 23, 2024 Some of my dolls have a character-specific style, whether they're based on anime characters or original ones. With others, I sort of worked out their style once I got them and tried different things on them. With Jessie, my Pear SmD, finding a wig I loved for her cemented my image of her as a magical librarian. So then I browsed Pinterest and image searches with that in mind, and found outfits that seemed like they would fit her. Maybe this is weird of me, but I feel like my dolls also have different levels of particularity when it comes to clothes. I feel like Rin has a very strong opinion on what she would and wouldn't wear - I can just imagine her getting cross at me when I pass on shoes that would be perfect for her because they're too expensive. Lucy, on the other hand, doesn't seem like she'd care too much about what she wears, so she's usually my go-to model for sewing.
