Marmit 60cm 🌸

I'm back at it with the weird and obscure dolls again.

Anyone who has seen my other posts probably knows that I love to collect sculpts that are older, slightly unusual and usually difficult to find. I also love Marmit dolls and have been a fan of their 1/6 dolls for a while. So, imagine my excitement when I was made aware of the fact that Marmit once made a 60cm anime doll! I ended up winning an auction for her at a more than bargain price:

As you can see, she's more or less the same scale as a DD and has closed eye holes. There isn't much information out there about her, but it might be a blank version of this doll. She was also available via mail order, likely in 2009-ish. I emailed Marmit themselves to ask for information, but after telling me which email address to use, they didn't reply lol. She's a little dated looking, but I'm really looking forward to painting her and making her beautiful!

This girl is being shipped via surface mail, so I'm not expecting her home for a couple months, but I look forward to sharing her here when she arrives.

Oh, what an interesting doll. Is she 5-point articulation?

Oh, that's so cool!  But I think the painted doll has a different head, because I don't see any trace of the molded eyes on her.

Thanks for sharing such an interesting piece of doll history. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of her all finished after she's arrived.

Yes, it seems so. She also has a headcap similar to a DD, so I wonder if they intended for people to carve the eyes out and for her to wear inset eyes?

Thank you Tam! 🖤 yeah, I did wonder the same re the molded eyes. I'm looking forward to her getting here, I hope I can work on her this summer.

Update. I received this very large but very lightweight box.

Bubblewrap mummy - past this point there's some doll nudity.

Here she is!

It's hard to see since I was struggling with the lighting but here is the mark on the back of her head - MS - 1. I wonder if Marmit ever planned to make more of these blank sculpts for customisers? Also, this is how her head attaches - the neck peg is simply sculpted as part of her body, and it goes through the hole in the head. The vinyl is very soft so I was able to remove the head with ease. Soft headcap pops right off like a DD

Excuse the messy shelf, but we can see she's a comparable scale to DD/Ob60 girls.

Her face! The sculpting is a little rough and pretty unsophisticated, but I'm sure there's potential there.

...and, she stinks like an old garage so her head has been soaking in a de-odourising mixture lol. I have no clue what to do with the body as I really am not interested in it, so I guess I'll just store it.

What does everyone think I should do with her eyes? Paint them? Open them up? I'm open to suggestions! 💕

Congratulations on your new arrival! Sounds like a fun project and I can't wait to see more. 😄

I don't know how hard opening up the eyes vs painting them would be, but I would suggest the first option. Separate eyes can shine wonderfully and bring life to a doll's expression. :)

Thank you, @Ayrell! In my experience painting/modding are both hard in their own ways…with painting you have the struggle of lumpy paint, muddy layers etc. so it’s pick your poison really 😅 But I agree, open eyes are really pretty. I might very well end up doing that!

Hm, I think the way you go kind of depends on the vibe?  If you keep the eyes closed and paint them, the head retains that very oldschool look you see in early product lines.  If you open them up you can style them a lot more modernly and change things around on a whim (way easier to swap eyes for a different feel vs...repainting the whole thing haha).

As a personal preference I would open the eyes, but that's because I'm not really fond of painted on/decal eyes on large scale dolls.

Def agree that painting the eyes would give her a more oldschool look. So far I’m leaning towards opening them to make her fit in more with my DDs.

so far this seems to be the most popular choice… 👀
