Guessing skintone - obvious or not?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but a lot of the queries I found for skintone were comparing Volks and Obitsu, which is not quite my soon-to-be-problem haha.

For Azone (and by extension I suppose, Obitsu), is the tone difference between normal and white skin fairly obvious, or is it subtle?  If I had a semiwhite Volks to compare to, would it be easy to figure out the skintone?

Assuming I didn't get bamboozled on an auction, I have an Azone head on the way but the listing had absolutely no info on the model or skintone.  It only said "custom" lol.  I'll have to eventually buy a body for this stray noggin, but will I be able to easily figure out what color body I need to get?

Obitsu/Azone "whitey" = somewhere halfway between Volks flesh and semi-white, AFAIK.

Also, depending on the age of the doll and where it was stored, the bodies tend to yellow over time, with the limbs yellowing differently than the trunk on older dolls. I don't know how it is for the newer ones, as my youngest Azone is from 2015...

It depends on the size. If it’s 1/3 scale, afaik Obitsu only makes Whitey and Super Whitey nowadays (in fact, idk if they ever made Natural in 1/3 size). Obitsu Whitey is closer to Volks Flesh than Semi-White, so if it’s darker than what you have on hand then you can reasonably assume it’s Whitey.

Obitsu does make tan parts for Azone (and Angelphilia), but iirc Azone has only released two 50cm dolls in tan (褐色肌) so it’s relatively uncommon. The listing probably would have mentioned it considering how popular lighter skin tones/unpopular darker skin tones are in Japan.

If it’s 1/6 or 1/12 scale, then it becomes trickier. The difference in colour is obvious, but if you have no point of reference then it might be hard to tell. Obitsu Natural/Azone Flesh is more like Volks Tan/Smart Doll Cinnamon, not to be confused with Azone’s Tan skin (タン肌) which is darker than both.

@ragnamuffin Thank you for the super detailed response!  This definitely helps a ton.  It's a larger scale head, so I can probably assume it's Whitey but I'll compare to my MDD since they'll be arriving around the same time.
