nendoroid dolls (ocs + vocaloid)

before i knew about DDs, i started collecting nendoroid dolls! it was an effective way to make some of my original characters (+ unpopular characters) and have dolls of some vocaloids mascots ~

since i collect nendos, it's so nice now seamless my customs dolls fit with the rest of my collection 😄 having the custom face plate service offered by good smile company really helps! however, i will say - a bit like DDs - skintones are quite limited. 

i will share some of my finds and customs in this thread.

first is yua! a miniature version of my dollfie  (even the outfit is almost the same). she has a friend with her ~ hopefully, i am able to make a bigger doll of him eventually, but male dolls (esp. dollfies) seem a bit challenging for now. i must look into it in the future! 🫡

 

i kinda gave up on getting all of miku nendoroid dolls  the only one i am missing so far is the date ver. but the aftermarket price of this one is around 200$ ! maybe if i get lucky, i will get my hands on her!

though, i have accumulated quite a few so far! miku, snow and sakura miku, plus rin, ren and luka! i am waiting for kaito and meiko coming later this year to complete the original line of vocaloids!

 

also, in my opinion, that's what the swacchao line is for ! it's so easy to make new nendoroid dolls of established characters ! i could do a wedding dress miku nt doll with the swacchao version 😄 

i must say, the nendoroid doll line have good clothing! the line is quite good and seems to be getting better lately. it's still much behind OB11-sized clothing (especially shoes, basic clothing and variety), but at least, we are getting great quality and sizing! though, i wished the production circle was not so long and good smile company aimed to release clothing more often. ALSO, because of the slightly smaller dimensions of the doll, people that exclusively make nendoroid-sized clothing items are rare other than GSC. 

a few sets i own are the hanbok, kimono and the dragon chinese outfit! 

and now that i think about it, i have the two traditional japanese wedding sets waiting for me at the post office! i should get them and try them out ASAP!

a bit more on nendoroid doll clothing and its sizing.

technically, these dolls come in three sizes - distinction that matters for clothing (height), as in boy and girl bodies aren't different enough for clothing to be of different sizes. instead, height matters more~ 

height adjustment set (right), standard (middle) and kids (left) (all mismatched colors sorry)

the height adjusted set makes it obitsu-11 height! despite the still smaller proportions and feet, ob11 clothing might fit a bit better! (will check when making progress on other customs)

a little tangent, but the kids set has to be most disappointing out of the entire line. it released in april of last year after its preorders opened in november of 2023. when it came out, it was released alongside a kindergarten outfit set. however, to this day, this remains the only set that was officially released for this size. noting the very long production cycle of these items and that there is no other clothing sets announced, it feels like gsc has abandoned the kids dolls a bit.

i understand that it is a great opportunity to get into custom clothing - but as someone that struggled a bit with making clothing for the regular-sized nendoroids, this doesn't sound like a good time to me 😆 one aspect of dollfie dreams that was really exciting to me was being able to sew on a much bigger scale. nendoroids were very challenging to work with in comparison, it's much harder to obtain crisp results:

so i can imagine this being an even bigger challenger for kids-sized dolls... however, given how there's no new sets that seem be released any time soon, i should probably give it a try anyway haha... i will continue my custom dolls next! 

Your dolls are so cute! I don't have any Archetype-bodied nendodolls, though I hope to make a minime on a YMY or Piccodo10 body soon. But I have three Nendodolls in the 20-23cm range!

Left is SQUISH and right is SQUIP. SQUIP is a Be More Chill fan-nendo on a YMY23 body, and SQUISH is my Be More Chill OC on a Piccodo20 body! Both with faceups/hair painting by me, though SQUISH has blue eyes atm. I also have a Miku on a YMY22 body, but I don't have pics of her atm!

ive never thought of using a bigger scale of bodies for nendoroid heads, but i'm seeing that the proportions are pretty good after all ! now, i think i will look for 20cm bodies in tan color (if i can find some~) i'll finally have a doll of yua with a scale between the giant dollfie and the mini nendoroid 😆 thank you for sharing!!
