Blotchy and scratchy paintwork…

So I’ve been practicing to do my own faceups but I’ve hit a problem…

I use water color to do eyeliner and lashes on my doll heads, and I’m not sure how to make it look smoother, currently it all turns out really blotchy because everytime I stroke my brush to make a certain area darker it ends up sorta cleaning up the paint instead ;-; does anyone know how to prevent this?

Have you sealed the head before starting? It's possible you need to let the sealant cure a little longer to really develop a good tooth on it. That will help catch the paint. Just make sure you're being gentle, and not using too much water in your watercolors, as from my understanding it's a bit of a fine line between wet enough to work with and "cleaning it up" wet.

You could also plan on working in thin layers - do one pass of watercolor on all the spots you want it on the head, let it dry, lightly seal it, and repeat, but that will take a while, and on vinyl, the more sealant layers you have, the more likely that handling the head will cause the sealant to crack. You'll have to experiment and see how many layers you need to get it dark enough to see if that's viable.

If you're not married to using watercolors, a lot of faceups (mine included) use thinned acrylic paint instead. Standard acrylic paint, especially the nice art-grade stuff, has great coverage so you can use fewer layers, but it's too thick to use without some thinner mixed in. Your fine lines will be clumpy and uneven, and thicker areas will show brush strokes, which thinned paint helps reduce. Thinned paint isn't too hard to clean if you make a mistake, either - it takes a bit longer to dry than the standard stuff, and as long as it's still wet, you can clean up acrylic with water just like watercolors.
