Changing eyes in character heads!

Recommended Posts

pandacornn

I know there was a post for this I saw a longgg time ago. I digged around a little but I'm too lazy to keep looking I figured I should just ask here! I've never had a character head dollfie but I know their eyes are hot glued in. I often hear of the removal process damaging the eyes and what not so I was wondering if there was a way to effectively remove the eyes without damaging the head/eyes! I thought maybe using a blow dryer but lord know how long that will take.

Any thoughts, experiences, ideas?

Thanks in advance! (:

Yep, most character DD's like Mai Shiranui, Rei Ayanami, Yoko, Yukino, Aoi, etc. all have their eyes glued in from Volks. But it's not hard to take out if you take your time.

I used a heat gun on its low setting to warm up the inside of the head to loosen the glue. You can just as easily use a hair dryer. On older heads, you may not even need to do that. I had a friend send me his DDI Rei Ayanami and her eyes had actually fallen out due to the Volks glue going bad and loosening up. Cleanup was hard tho as the Volks glue leaves a slimy and sticky residue all over.

But for newer heads, all you need to do is warm up the glue and it will eventually peel back taking the eyes out with it. Just don't pry around the eyes with anything that will possibly break or crack the eyes. That's happened to many people and it's no fun.

Just take your time with it and they should come right out with a hairdryer or heat gun.

Thank you so much, Baldylox!

I heard a lot of people say that they just push the eye out (with just their hands) and a lot of other people said that it causes cracking on the eye!!

I'm picking up Millhi on Sat. from Volks and I wanted to try and figure out how to get her default eyes out before then(:

I will be sure to give this a try!!

Thanks so mcuhh~~

You're welcome! I think that if you use a hair dryer on her from the inside of her head, you will be just fine. Just don't get the dryer too close to the vinyl, you don't want to mark it or burn it.

I wouldn't press on her eyes from the front, I would use a plastic knife or something else with no real edge to it so you can work the glue from the edges easily.

Why the teardrop icon? Things were under control. Why stir it up?

To be honest I just used pliers to get the glue out, then I got the eyes out of the glue with my hands.

I'm so damn quality.

That's a pretty good way to go about it. In the newer heads the glue comes out a LOT more easily than in older heads. I haven't had many problems with my girls as far as getting the glue out.

I think I've had to use thinner on our carving knife once out of all the heads I've messed about in.

@PlasticFantastic; That's really good to hear! I'm glad the glue is easier to get out, less wrestling for me -w-;

@nightmare tea; Hrm, I might try that first! But gently 8D;; I don;t want the hairdryer melting the glue all over the place ;A; and it looks like people were able to pull it out in one piece!
