marisa_doll Posted March 24, 2012 Hello, I was wondering if anyone had problems with food smell? I live in a one room flat and must eat in the same place as my dolls ^^ My SQ Hibiki I am putting up for adoption a SQ-Lab Ren head on flickr. Contact me for more details! SisterKyoya Posted March 26, 2012 The easy answer: No, not in my experience. The long answer and how I know... A few weeks ago I was spending time working on sewing some doll clothes in our living room (upstairs), accompanied by all three of our DD, when a package came with our long awaited JList order. I had been cooking some garbanzos but kept forgetting about it, my concentration on mundane things was not good that day. One of the things that was in the package was some paper clay that I really wanted to see if it would work for DD scale food. I had never used it before and all the instructions were in Japanese. Wanting to know the drying time and other similar info so I went to research on my main computer in our bedroom (downstairs in the basement), so excited over new stuff that I spacing off the cooking beans. Around a half hour later I smelled the beans cooking and almost didn't think about it, but something didn't seem right. I realized that it didn't smell like they were cooking, they were burning. I shot out of my chair as fast as I could and started hollering at Ravendruid when I was halfway up the stairs. The entire upstairs was filled with smoke, leaving only about 6 inches above the floor as mostly breathable air. I ran into the kitchen, paying astute attention to check for flames or heat and not to go in if I sensed either, holding my breath the best I could. My heart nearly stopped when I looked into our tiny kitchen, the smoke was very white, but I saw light against the ceiling. It took me a split second to realize that it was just the kitchen light, not fire. A couple steps further and I could see the pan that had the beans in it, looking like smouldering coals in a BBQ, but nothing was on fire. The burner was promptly turned off and I raced out the side door so I could breathe but to let the smoke start clearing out as well. Luckily that was the worst that had happened, our poor cats were rather frightened by the ordeal as well. The smoke was so bad that it was pouring out of the house for a half hour before it cleared. At least the neighbors didn't call the fire department... Raven and I had to go back downstairs to get away from the horrid smell of the smoke and where we could breathe before I realized that Yuriko and Tamayuki were both sitting up on the dinner table. Raven ran and got them, and I felt so guilty that I cried as I hugged Tamayuki. I thought he would permanently smell like very weird cigarette smoke, very bad for me because I have a strong sensitivity to any smoke and I'm left with massive migraines for hours after. About four days or so later the smoke smell on Tamayuki had dissipated significantly, apposed to the upstairs part of the house that took a week, and the top of the stairwell that took two and a half weeks... Now many weeks later, he smells like new, even his Volks wig that held onto the stink longer than his body did. So my recommendation for you would be to have somewhere to keep your dolls where they can be covered, like an enclosed shelf with clear plastic covering the open side, or even just a clean white sheet to cover them with when you need to cook smelly foods. Also cover them whenever you cook anything greasy, because the oil tends to be carried on smoke, even just a little bit of it can do it. I hope my extended explanation was helpful. ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram

milkytea Posted March 26, 2012 I don't think you'll have to worry, either. My home is one room, and none of my dolls or ponies ever smell like food--and we cook almost every day.
PrettyCranium Posted March 26, 2012 Sister Kyoya, please get a fire alarm! I'm worried that it got to that point before you noticed. Sounds scary.
SisterKyoya Posted March 26, 2012 Sister Kyoya, please get a fire alarm! I'm worried that it got to that point before you noticed. Sounds scary. It has been dutifully added to the shopping list. Other than that, I don't know what to say because I'm mortified that it has been overlooked for too long. At the time it didn't even occur to me. ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
Chriandra Posted April 6, 2012 I've never had a problem with any of my dolls (resin or vinyl) ever smelling like food. They all still just smell like what they're made of.
T-Rho Posted April 8, 2012 First off .... Sister Kyoya I am very glad you are okay and at least nothing was horribly damaged But yes .... get that fire alarm :p Second .... One of my friend had a DD that smelled musty, but I blame him on keeping the doll in the musty box. He let it air out for a while and then the smell went away after a week or so. I have a similar problem with you as everything is sort of in one room since I live in a condo and where I cook and eat my food is very close to each other. I haven't had a problem with Ryoko hanging out at my house nor the figures and nendoroids, which are all plastic, in them getting stuck with my food smell. If you had a concern I would suggest just airing them out .... ************************************** DD's: Aoife, Maeve, Sinead, Claire, Merida, Orla, Alana (arrived) T-Rho http://kaitekinamafura.wordpress.com - Blog https://kaitekinamafura.storenvy.com - Store
