marisa_doll Posted March 29, 2012 hi. i have a question ^^ if your doll's clothes get dirty, how do you clean them? thanks for any response My SQ Hibiki I am putting up for adoption a SQ-Lab Ren head on flickr. Contact me for more details!
misskale Posted March 29, 2012 I think it's just normal cleaning methods using a washing machine or hand wash with pre-treating. Although, I'd think cold wash would be best. Also a dye magnet might not be a bad thing. And, I'd put it in a lingerie bag so that nothing gets lost or damaged.
Alphakitty Posted March 29, 2012 You can handwash them with soap & water and then let them airdry which is what I do, though I know people put them in the washing machine in a delicates bag or a pillowcase.. If it's something really delicate (like lacey stockings) handwashing is probably the way to go, but putting them in the washing machine can't hurt them--just make sure not to put them in the dryer! Cauldroness Posted March 30, 2012 I've always hand-washed items in the coldest water my hands can tolerate. My normal process is: 1. Scrub the sink clean and rinse away all residue. 2. Put a small dab of Dawn dishwashing soap in the bottom of the sink, and run the cold water until the sink is nearly full. I often use my fingers to swirl the water and make sure the Dawn is completely dissolved. I always use the original blue Dawn, some of the other kinds can leave a slight color residue. 3. Put the outfit in question in the sink. Let it soak at least 10 minutes, but I've totally forgotten and left things as long as 2 hours. 4. If there's any dirty spots, I have a super-soft bristled brush. I'll gently work at the dirty spot with the brush. I find that rubbing with fingers, or rubbing the cloth against other cloth, tends to result in pilings, but very soft bristles do not. 5. Rinse in cold water. 6. Rinse in cold water. 7. No, seriously, rinse again in cold water. 8. If it's an outfit that seems to be a "bleeder" (the colors bleed), I'll do two more rinses, one in warm water, and then one last one in cold again. (Warning: Warm water tends to fade very dark fabrics, especially black. You have to pick whether you want a pure-black color that is likely to stain, or a faded black color that is not likely to stain.) 9. Lay flat on my sweater rack and let dry. I use the same system for the most delicate of my own clothes -- items with sequins or fine stitching that I do not want to put in the washing machine -- and it's always worked great for me. Poofiemus Posted March 31, 2012 So I'm not the only one who uses dish soap on doll clothes! Used it on Nanoha's staining stockings, and they haven't added any new stains to her since. (Still haven't gotten the worst ones out of her, but at least it's not getting worse.) But yeah, my method's pretty similar to Cauldy's, just cracks me up that both of us use dish soap instead of normal clothing detergent. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. TASfaction Posted April 7, 2012 Wow dish soap o.O Don't think I would try it, fear it might have some effects on the clothes more with the unsuitable type of soap.
waha Posted April 7, 2012 I just followed Cauldroness' process with dish soap, washing Akari's super-staining socks (Curse you, Volks!). Akari's still on de-staining, but once her thighs are fine I'll try them on again.

Taralphiel Posted May 1, 2012 Thanks for the links everyone! This was one of the big things that worried me about my DD. I have a pile of clothes that might fit her, but I didn't want to put them on her because the fabric is too dark. I'll give these methods a go, in addition to a body stocking. I do have a question - does anyone here recommend the vinegar method? I'm a put put off by the thought of using it, and any smell that may remain...
PrettyCranium Posted May 1, 2012 I've used vinegar, but I have no idea whether it made a difference. There is no residual smell if you rinse well. Do not use vinegar on pure wool clothing, it will eat the wool (not that many wool outfits, more for hand knits).
DJStarstryker Posted May 2, 2012 If the only problem dirt wise on the clothes is dust, you can just use a lint roller to get it off. Between that and keeping clothes that aren't being actively worn by your dolls put away in drawers, you really shouldn't have to wash your dolls' clothes very much at all. The main reasons to wash them ultimately are if you pose them for pictures outside and they get dirty, or if you're trying to remove excess dye for stain prevention reasons. Are you ready to rock? ^_^
Waynio Posted May 3, 2012 I just put mine in the washing machine when i do my laundry. Most i wash is just wait Aoi wears alot. (Her default outfit that i keep her in) After that i just let them air dry. Wayne
Poofiemus Posted May 3, 2012 Hey, I have a question: what is the recommended opinion/procedure on washing outfits with wires in them? Volks has done this on several character outfits, so I'm thinkin' there's got to be others like me. In my case not only has taking Nanoha out and about in her default gotten a wee bit of grime on it, but she even came with a few what look like grass stains on her outfit when I bought her second-hand. I'd like to give it a wash. . . but I've got no clue what kind of metal Volks uses in these outfits, and by extension if they'll do something nasty like rust or patina if washed. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
Jezrah Posted May 3, 2012 Hmmm, well I can't speak from experience yet but I think it would be a similar idea to an underwire bra. Although nowadays there are more bras with plastic in them they definitely used to be metal, and you could wash them. But if it was me and I was paranoid about the rusting I would try to spot test a less conpsicuous place to see what happens first.
