'Toning' a body

Recommended Posts

marisa_doll

hi.

i would like to know if anyone has experience 'toning' a body.

i want to make the body i bought for my doll match her head... and i think that means just introducing more red tones into it (maybe some violet??):

響: why this body... it doesn't match me!

i think i will do this with MSC and pastels... if anyone has a prior experience i would appreciate the help.

i am aware that it might 'chip' or rub off...

most important area is the neck part.

either that or i try a MDD bust part (it might match close enough than what i have already).

I tried pastels and found it hard to get a consistent tone throughout the whole body. I gave up in the end and wiped her clean

Is toning the same as body blushing?

i got the word "toning" from an article on colour matching an obitsu body to a pullip head.

the tutorial was pretty much the same as blushing with pastels, but applying it generally over a larger area.

Oh, I see. So is toning like changing the natural skin colour of the body entirely (Pale to tan)? I know body blushing is just little areas and not really changing the skin tone.

I would like to see the process if you do end up toning a body. =)

If you're referring to this tutorial:

http://www.requiemart.com/pullip/toning.html

All the toning is done on hard bust bodies, so they're 100% made of hard plastic, and if you read the tutorial it says it can be done on any "hard plastic" body. This is a totally different material from the squishy vinyl of the DDs. I'm not sure if it would work the same? I own both bodies (Obitsu HB & DDs), and they feel hugely different.

When I toned a body for my Pullip, I had to mix up a big batch of pastels prior to toning -- that was the only way I could ensure a consistent color. So I imagine you'd have to mix up a huge batch for a DD?

(I hope nobody is offended by some slight DD nudity.)

In a way I accidentally did "toning" to my Lily's bust. I had only intended to "blush" her nipples but I got a bit carried away and started adding a light pinkish tone to the entire body. Trying to add a bit darker and lighter tone in different areas. (low and high areas).

I like how it turned out but when I put the bust back on her I realized it did not match the rest of her body.

I had planned to do the rest of her body but never got around to it. hehe

To prepare the vinyl I used Mr. Color clear spray (matte I think) and gave it 2 or 3 light coats. Then I used a small set of pastels and a soft paint brush to apply the color to the body. I gave it 2 or 3 more light coats of spray to seal it in.

I assume you could do the entire body this way but you may want to take the body apart to do each piece separately.

I think the varnish + pastels should work okay for the DD bodies, here is my justification, feel free to disregard!

I tried to tone a "fleshtone" Obitsu bust for my DDdy, to give her an alternative option (I had it lying around, unused). I used the pastels and MSC spray method, but the vinyl was too soft, so while the result looked good when it was finished, manipulating the bust onto the DDdy frame meant the varnish cracked under the flexing, and the toning flaked off/cracked. MSC wasn't flexible enough to cope with the softness of the vinyl. (I had taken special care to spray the MSC under the right conditions, so it wasn't humidity or coldness that caused the cracking).

The DD vinyl is much harder/stiffer than the Obitsu vinyl, so the varnish and pastel blushing method would probably work much better: the MSC only flaked off the Obitsu bust when I really flexed it. I know people use MSC/varnish to 'seal' their DD bodies against staining, so I think this method would work fine. I know I've been tempted to blush my girls properly.

Edit: I'd seen this site before, just found it again, this blog is awesome:

http://craftychick126.wordpress.com/category/modding-projects/

uses dyes and spray paints to colour DD and 1/6 scale bodies. I am seriously considering picking up a 2nd hand DD body to turn into a Gerudo because of this blog (although nose modding in such a project would terrify me).
