Innocentsake Posted April 22, 2012 Since there isn't already one up I decided it was up to me to do the honors hehe~ My husband & I recently adopted a beautiful Netherland Dwarf Rabbit from a local breeder. Her name is Abby and she'll be 3 months old on Monday! We've had her for a month now so the only pictures I have of her was the day she arrived. I'll have to take more pictures, till then enjoy these! Abby 4 by sakura_chan15, on Flickr Abby 2 by sakura_chan15, on Flickr Kirino decided to visit the new girl in the household~ Oh and don't worry, since this was the first day bringing her home the cage was quite empty. But now it's full of good things! Right side is her litter box & water bottle. In the middle she has a cooling stone & towel for resting on. The towel is her favorite though hehe. And on the left side she has her water bowl, food bowl, and her edible house that she has torn to bits now. Already have another waiting for her once she destroys her current one She has a chew stick, a ball with a bell in it, and napkins which she loves to tear up! Abby 1 by sakura_chan15, on Flickr Poor Kirino... When Abby got up to her and smelled her she took off quick and wouldn't go near where she was standing! Perhaps Kirino smelled like danger? I think Abby has good sense She's gotten a good bit bigger since these pictures, but still small since her max weight is 2lbs and she'll only be the size of a small cantaloupe (which it seems like she's already gotten there!). Very cute and full of energy! I'll definitely have to take more pictures of her when I can and if I can catch her still enough to take photos that aren't blurry Does anyone else have a bunny friend they'd like to share pictures of? PrettyCranium Posted April 22, 2012 Abby is adorable. I am in love!!! I also have a beautiful rabbit girl, Roxanne (more commonly called Roxy or Pixie). She is the love of my life and is now 13 years old. We've had her since she was a baby. She is a dark grey mini-Rex and the softest thing that you will ever feel! We unfortunately lost her bonded mate, Major Tom (Tommy) a few years ago, and I'm still heartbroken. He was our first rabbit and we brought him home when he fit in the palm of your hand. He was an ND like Abby, but orange in colour! We lost him when he was 9 years old. I'm kind of an old hand at the bunny thing by now, so I'm happy to help with questions re: litter boxes, spaying, etc. I strongly recommend the House Rabbit Society website (http://www.rabbit.org) as well as the mailing list/Yahoo group "Etherbun." Roxy is like a child to me. I know non-animal people sometimes have a hard time understanding that, but it's just the way it is.
Innocentsake Posted April 23, 2012 Roxanne is a lovely name! Her nicknames are equally awesome hehe~ I looked up what a Mini-Rex looks like and they are adorable!!! I do hope you'll be able to post a picture of her sometime That's very sad to hear about her bonded mate, Major Tom (Tommy). At least he lived a wonderful 9 years in your care, I'm sure he was the happiest ND bunny! And orange? Wow that sounds like such an awesome color. I've had a couple pets in my 26 years so I know the pain of losing an animal family member, even after so much time passes it still hurts Thanks so much for the Rabbit Society link! My husband has read a couple things off it so I'll be bookmarking it now. And I'll have to add myself to that Etherbun group. Being someone who has experience with rabbits I was wondering if I could get your opinion on spaying. My husband & I have read about how ND female rabbits can get ovarian & urinary tract cancer. We read that spaying would help eliminate this risk. But the local breeder we bought her from warned against doing that because ND rabbits have a high risk of dying from being spayed/neutered because of how small they are. Except we've read many things that say we should spay her so we aren't sure. What is your opinion on this? Any advice would really help out! And Abby is definitely like a child to us! We're are animal lovers so it's just natural for us to feel this way. I've definitely met my share of non-animal people who think it's silly, but I don't listen to them
Alphakitty Posted April 23, 2012 I don't have a bunny of my own (not for trying--I used to ask my dad once a week when I was younger ^^;). However, I DO have a bunny-related picture to share! SirNarwhal and I took one of our Nendos to a county fair in upstate NY and made a... "friend" XD Not exactly the friendliest bunny, he seemed totally horrified! DD Family: Mari, Saber Lily, Marisa, Soniko, Noumi, Kirino, Kuroneko, Sakura (DD Sakuno), Aerie, Akira, Kiki, Koko, Rose (DDS Mariko), Kureha, Ryoko, Lucy, Haruka, Rise, Extra & Alter! Except we've read many things that say we should spay her so we aren't sure. What is your opinion on this? Any advice would really help out! Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely spay. There is a 100% chance of uterine and ovarian cancer in non-reproducing female rabbits. She will have a much longer life span if spayed. Also, it will help with behaviour when she gets a little older. It will be easier to keep her litter trained, and some rabbits spray urine to mark things when they are hormonal. Roxy also went into false pregnancy before she was spayed and pulled out her fur to make a nest. Spaying was scary, but I have no doubt that Roxy would not be with us for 13 years if we had not gone ahead and done that. She is not much bigger than an ND (still considered a mini breed) and had no problems. The key to spaying a tiny rabbit is to find a vet that is well-experienced in rabbits. You want one that operates on multiple buns a month, not just the occasional one. In a lot of places, rabbits are considered to be exotic pets (?) so it can be harder to find a vet that deals with them a lot. The House Rabbit Society website has a link to rabbit-saavy vets, and if you post on Etherbun with a "Need vet in . . . ." type of post that can be helpful as well. I always take advice from breeders with a grain of salt. They have different goals with raising rabbits than pet owners. I'm happy to help however I can, and I can post onto Etherbun or ask in other forums for you if you want. I've been a house rabbit advocate for 13 years, even helped establish an Ontario House Rabbit group. I remember first getting Tommy and having no idea what I was in for! These little guys have really changed my life.

These little guys have really changed my life. I was hoping that would be your answer! It's very reassuring to hear from a long time rabbit owner We found 3 vets in our area on House Rabbit Society so we'll be calling them to check which one is best (we'll ask how many buns they work on & their success rate as well). We want our Abby to live for as long as possible so my husband & I will do what needs to be done Though she still has time since we read that most vets will want to wait till she's 6 months old. I also went ahead and joined Etherbun so I'll have to read over posts there and remember to ask questions there if I need to That's really awesome that you established an Ontario House Rabbit Group! Abby is so full of energy and is just so entertaining. I could sit down in front of her cage all day just watching her Thanks so much for all the advice PC! Innocentsake Posted April 23, 2012 Just took these pictures with my iPhone while she's playing in her pen in front of her cage. The Bun is Resting by sakura_chan15, on Flickr She tuckers herself out really quick after running, jumping, and chewing on her toys Watch Bun by sakura_chan15, on Flickr I love this picture because she looks so epic
PrettyCranium Posted April 23, 2012 Oh, she's so adorable. I love it when they do the epic tired bunny flop. She looks very soft, as well! That last picture looks like she will take over the world. It's been a long time since I've had a baby bun, and Roxy has some arthritis now, so she doesn't climb/jump as much as she used to. Those guys can really go fast and climb up on to things that you wouldn't expect them to be able to reach! I also love the binkies -- the rabbit community term for those funny little flying/dancing/popping hops they do when they are super-excited or happy. It's like they can't contain the happiness in their bodies any more!

Needless to say, Roxy is not amused if I try it.
Alphakitty Posted April 23, 2012 It seems my knowledge of bunnies is lacking.... maybe I'll have to get one to fix that! I just love petting her Haha I agree that she looks to be scheming to take over the world... or at least the world that is the apartment They really are fast and climbers too! We have to really watch Abby carefully when she's out playing because she'll try to find a way out to expand her freedom. We switch off who's in the pen with her because Abby seems a ton happier when someone is in there with her than just being alone. My husband just told me the term binkies the other day ^o^ Is an explosion of happiness indeed! She's always doing binkies and it makes my heart swell with well happiness! ABBY IS SO CUTE!!!! Yessss fall in love with the Abby ;D Aww, so sweet! I love when animals stick their feet out like that, though I am always so tempted to touch their little paw-pads and wake them up. ^^; I'm the same way, I can't help but touch her little feet while she's sleeping ^O^ She wakes up and looks at me like "Hey you woke me!" hehe~
