FACE-UP Asuka Langley from Kotori!

Hello there,

I started few days ago painting my first DD heads.

This is my first "serious" attempt:

But I am here to ask you a critique on this work:

ASUKA LANGLEY from a DD limited Kotori head.

I have 2 versions of this girl:

 

1) "poor" eyelashes and less blushing:

(sorry if the eyes seems strange! They were the only light blue I had!)

Looks to me like the 2nd version captures the attitude and personality pretty well. The eyes don't seem all that odd to me.

 

The real test here would be to put an Asuka style wig on her and to put her on a body and see how she feels then.

The eyebrows are consistently the weak point. While they shouldn't be exact mirrors of each other, they are a bit too dissimilar so far. I think in all of them, you're going way too heavy and thick on the eyebrows. You may want to go much thinner on them. There's seldom much line weight in the anime aesthetic for eyebrows, so making them thinner will probably make her look a bit more like the pictures you see. It looks like you may be trying to blend colors in them as well with a lighter and darker shade of brown. However, the effect isn't quite working. Particularly in the second one, it comes across more as having an inconsistent coat of paint.

 

Aside from the eyebrows, I think you're doing a good job on the rest of the face in general. In each of them you're improving. However, #3 might be a bit too pretty girl for her. You may be better off going with the paler lips/less blush as in 2 since you seldom see any pictures of her with make-up/dark lips.

It looks better on the 3rd. But I agree with Kymaera. Asuka have thinner and subtler brows.

In the last pic I have just lost Asuka's character xD and I just did a cute (imho) face-up. Knowing that it isn't Asuka anymore, what do you thing is "wrong" or better doable? ^^ thanks!

You could try using just an color in the browns, and a little bit of pastels in her mouth, making a subtler transition to the lipstick area. Maybe some gloss too?

 

I am not to found of the red and white marks in the cheeks, but that is an personal taste. I saw some dollfies with glossy areas like an eyeshadow. Looks interesting in my opinion.

I's love to give my face-up a kind of character and personality, too, and I think that I still have a lot to practice before having *really* good results

Maybe it's because of the non good quality of the pics, but I don't use black colors for face-ups, just all the brown tones.

By following your advice and using Juu-Yuki's method, I'll use pastels on the lips, next time! ^_^ there is already some gloss on it, sadly the light doesn't show it really.

 

Uhm no, I don't really like glossy eyes xD I can do that only if the head's owner specifically requests it to me ><

I like the "poor" eyelashes one the best, and the first one really intrigues me, the more i look at it the more i like it. I think its the "sketchy" feel i get from it. Almost looks like its animated and moving abit.
