Yellowing?

Recommended Posts

nkei

Hi all~

I've been curious about yellowing of white skin DDs in particular because I see a lot of Nias (my unicorn ) with their heads yellowed (like the one currently on yja for 70k yen).

Is yellowing removable for vinyl? I know it is for resin, but Google offers no answers to my particular inquiry so I thought I'd ask here .

Thanks! I'm thinking of whether to bid for that Nia or not but if yellowing isn't removable I'd have to think about it. For anyone with a yellowed doll, how do they look?

They really do yellow over time. My Lilly, a DD Yashiro Kasumi I have had since 2005 and she has yellowed. I never noticed until I saw her against brand new white skin parts XD It;s not a great comparison, but it's better than nothing.

That is a new white skin hand against an old white skin leg. You can see how the hand is the usual pinky white colour, but the leg is a creamy muted yellow. To be honest, it doesn't look so bad in person.

Now I'll be honest, I've not wrapped Lilly up in cotton wool. She has been played with and abused. I've taken her outside on countless photo shoots for extended periods of time. She's been openly displayed around the house, sometimes near windows on sunny days. I've dropped her in the ocean. She's never been in a display cabinet and she's never worn a body stocking. And through all that handling and abuse over the years, she only ever had 1 magic eraser sponge bath, she could really do with another. Who knows, maybe she is actually white under the surface dirt? XD

Lilly has been through a lot and it shows, but I don't care. She's just as precious to me now as she was brand new. Perhaps even more precious. The colour she has turned is subtle and even. If you don't sit her next to brand new white things, than she still looks fine to me. Personally I actually quite like the colour she's turned anyway, it's nice, she looks like yummy creamy white chocolate!

Obviously, I've never tried to remove the yellowing, because it doesn't bother me at all. I would say though, if you want a white skin doll just go for it! If she yellows a bit, it doesn't matter because she'll still be the girl you fell in love with, right?

If yellowing is a super serious concern to you, than just make sure you treat her right and protect her. Concern yourself with prevention, so that you will never have to fix it. You can coat them in UV protection spray like MSC, you can put them in body stockings so they don't absorb the uv rays so much, keep them in dark rooms or away from direct sunlight. Do the opposite of the things that cause yellowing, than it may never even happen.

I'm sure if you really want her, you'll work something out ^^

Thanks aquilla!

It was really heartwarming to hear about you and Lilly . Sounds like you had a ton of fun together! (The ocean thing made me laugh haha). I'm also glad the yellowing isn't as horrible as it's made out to be.

I actually love white skin DDs and have 3 myself and I don't think I'll mind too much if they ever yellow, since I will love them just as much. It's just I wasn't sure if I was willing to shell out ~70k - 80k for an already yellowed Nia if that makes sense. I also wouldn't mind if both the head and body were yellowed evenly; I just wondered if it would be weird if only the head was yellowed while the body was still the pinky white colour. I guess I could always cover it up with clothing, but the reason why I asked if the yellowing was removable was because I didn't want to have a frankenstein'd DD lol .

Thanks a bunch!

Yeah, you'll probably see it eventually, but it'll likely take much more time than the yellowing for a resin. It just depends on how you display the doll, use the doll (do you take her in the sun for photo shoots a lot?), etc.

It's just a thing with plastic in general, honestly. Vinyl is just another type of plastic. If you look at older PVC figures, especially lighter color ones, they may have some yellowing too. I've seen it on figures in a certain store near me that likes to keep their figures in a display case that faces the sun. Those have severe sun yellowing/bleaching.

Nia is pretty rare these days. I would say get her since she is your unicorn but only if the head is yellowed evenly. I don't think its will be big deal because you might not notice the difference in photos. But yellowing and crazy staining are some of the reasons why I avoid WS T^T

I wonder if a coat of UVCUT sealant will help.

As far as I know, vinyl turns yellow either because of dirt trapped under oils or sunlight.

You can try cleaning a part to see which it is. A baking soda paste or white vinegar would probably be the easiest to check with.

I think the uv/cut would help prevent against yellowing for a bit, but it would wear down over time.

I don't really know about DD since I only have one but if they do yellow like resin dolls, I'm sure it's not at all ugly. I have a quite old resin doll and she is yellowed but it doesn't make her less beautiful. I'm assuming it's the same for DD. It's just a style and it shows their age, that's all

Thanks for the discussion everyone .

Haha your comment made me totally want to jump on that Nia! But alas I want to try for Rise so that unicorn will still be on the backburner for a bit. And you shouldn't avoid WS! They're so pretty and as far as I can tell they don't stain...in light coloured clothes lol >.>.

Yep, this will definitely help me judge whether to get the next discoloured Nia at a decent price (if I ever see another one lol ). I was just curious as to whether it's removable or not because I'm sure I'm not the only one to look this up on Google and go like "...wait. I can't find an answer!?" I guess it'll continue to stay a mystery haha.

I just found something interesting when looking at Den of Angels.

DSC04662.JPG

This body is a Saber Alter v1 body, so came out around 2008. It has some rather extensive greening, especially on her arms and legs.

I don't have a white skin girl yet. My oldest girl, Rin, is from 2009. She has zero yellowing. So I think it is partly how you treat your doll. The above doll might've been taken for photos outside a lot? Unsure. I think the above is probably the very first DD I've seen with yellowing/greening. Every other DD I've seen in pics and in person, to include old DDIs, hasn't had yellowing.

I don't know what that person did to their doll, but I have never seen a dd go green before. Even my Lilly doesn't have a green tone and she's from the very first batch of WS bodies.

I thought my Lilly had been through a lot, but at least she's not green o_o

That's really odd... The elbow and wrist joints are a different type of plastic, so it's odd that they are such a uniform color with the arms. I think the arms might be white skin, and the shoulder joints, bust, etc normal skin. That could be enhancing the different skin tones in this photo.

Not saying you're wrong, DJStarstryker, I'm not on DOA, so if you've communicated with the owner, you'd know more than me.

I had a WS body and newer WS head once. Newer WS vinyl is afair a little bit more pinkish than older.

Looks like Volks changed the material, because newer NS vinyl also looks different than old NS.

That looks like a silicon chest on the Saber. Then there's definitely blushing on the pelvis/thighs and a NS head.

I wouldn't be surprised, with that paint scheme, if they applied a blue blushing to the arms. That would make it look green and also not color the joints.

It's WS head and WS L bust, but both new - hence the difference in skintone.

But the arms may be stained, it's from first version Saber and I'm not sure if her dress wasn't a staining-monster...

The texture looks so weird though.

Sabers Alter's first dress did stain, but black clothing leaves dark blue/purple stains, not green.

Maybe it faded or was treated with something. Or it's from other clothes. Anyway, looks strange
