Jezrah Posted May 16, 2012 Sorry if this isn't the right forum for this post. I was just wondering how people decide whether to keep the original character name for their doll or whether to rename her. I've noticed some who keep all original names, some who rename everyone, and some who do a little of both. And for those who keep all original names, what would they call the Sabers if they have more than one? I know most call the original Saber as just Saber, and often Saber Lily will just be Lily. But now that there are five available Sabers, it might get confusing with multiple in the house. So, yes, how/why do you choose whether to keep or change a name? waha Posted May 16, 2012 I'm actually faced with this problem. I have several girls already but they're all customs so I have to give them my own names. But I'm awaiting my first limited DD... and I'm just unsure if I should keep her default name or not.
Poofiemus Posted May 16, 2012 Hm, I guess in most cases it's probably going to be a case-by-case basis. I got Agatha second-hand, and her first owner called her Kasuga. I liked the name, but wanted to turn her into a particular webcomic character I liked, so she got a name change as well as a makeover. If her first owner had done photostories or something with her before selling her, I might not have gone this route, but since her Kasuga incarnation had so little development I had no issues with just changing her completely. Nanoha's a different story. While I adore the character Nanoha Takamachi, I originally felt the head mold was an odd representation of her, so I spent some time pondering alternate names before I bought her (Holly and Audrey were the top contenders). This was compounded by the fact that I thought I would most likely be getting just head and body rather than full set due to cost. However, I am very, very glad that I lucked out and got her with everything, because the second I opened her box I knew she'd be staying as Nanoha! As for others on my wish list, I probably would have some alternate names picked out just in case, but wait on figuring out whether they would retain or change their identities until I got them in hand. This is particularly the case for Marisa, as I'm not familiar with her source material at all, so it would mostly be a matter of her "wearing" the name rather than a question of keeping or ditching her origin. Hm, the Saber conundrum is an interesting one. I do know that some people do refer to Saber Alter as just "Alter" a fair chunk of the time, partially because they seem to be keeping to the original backstory of her being an alternate/subconscious version of Saber. However, that doesn't mean she, or any other Saber, couldn't pick up some other name as an alias, or perhaps even be a different historical/mythological figure than the original Saber. In the end, once you get the doll in your hands, she's yours to interpret as you will. When you see your very own doll in person for the first time, just kind of ponder to what extent she "feels" like the source character (if there is one), and if she doesn't, then maybe a name change is in order! In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

Jezrah Posted May 16, 2012 Ah, sorry for the repeat topic I must've missed it, but I was glad to read it now. I am still curious about people's opinions on multiple Sabers though
kymaera Posted May 17, 2012 I have the original Saber and she's Saber. I couldn't have her be anyone else. Saber Alter is on the way and she won't be called Saber Alter, Saber, or anything similar (except maybe in passing). I had briefly toyed with calling her "Altia" as a combination of Alter and Arthuria, but since I already have a "Tia", that's not going to happen.
Alphakitty Posted May 17, 2012 I am going to have 3 Sabers once Volks USA actually gets mine (in August >.<) and I plan on referring to them by the second half of their names. Saber Lily is Lily, Saber Alter is Alter, Saber Extra is Extra (though Nero sounds better, so I might go with that). Though when I talk about Saber I do mean Lily since she was our first Saber variation~ DD Family: Mari, Saber Lily, Marisa, Soniko, Noumi, Kirino, Kuroneko, Sakura (DD Sakuno), Aerie, Akira, Kiki, Koko, Rose (DDS Mariko), Kureha, Ryoko, Lucy, Haruka, Rise, Extra & Alter! baldylox Posted May 18, 2012 I don't own any Sabers other than Extra whenever she decides to appear. But seeing as she will be my only Saber, that will be her name. But if I had others, I would probably call them by their surnames of Alter or Lily. I wouldn't call Extra "Extra" tho because to me it sounds... off. I may call her Nero tho since it sounds cooler. Or maybe a similar sounding name that's more feminine. But that's only if I had other Sabers too. Otherwise, Saber Extra will be Saber for me. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
Galvatim Posted May 18, 2012 I've only renamed my Aoi 2nd, since Aoi 1st was staying Aoi. Ai was a pretty obvious name, in fact I'd been considering it for another character related to Aoi. I have a tough time coming up with names, I tend to worry about the meaning, and how that would apply to the character. Oh, and my Saber Alter will just be Saber, since she'll be my only Saber. I'll be portraying her as a hybrid of her two personalities, most likely.
DJStarstryker Posted May 18, 2012 We're renaming our Saber Alter v2. I think it's silly to name a girl after a weapon (Garnet's nickname of Dagger in Final Fantasy IX irritated me for the same reason) and calling her "Alter" is especially weird when you don't have original Saber. Name is already picked out, but it won't be announced until she arrives and we're 100% sure that name suits her. Also working on getting a Rise, but I'll be modding her to be an original character of mine, so she'll be named after her. Rin and Akira (though she's mostly called by her nickname of Kira-nyan) kept their original names. Are you ready to rock? ^_^
rukitron Posted May 18, 2012 I stopped using Mai's KOF stuff and not that great looking wig shortly after I got her, I just ended up keeping the Mai name, maybe dropped the last name. Got an 04 head, had trouble naming her for a while, but Holly stuck, she was almost named Melody, lol. Saber Extra is coming out soon, just gonna call her Nero. Cauldroness Posted May 23, 2012 I definitely want to rename my DDs, but I have had the WORST time trying to find names for them. So far it's been "Tits McGee" for Sasara (who is now on lay-away to go to another home) and "Golden Eyes" for Marisa. I've actually been wanting to rename most of my BJDs, too... Poofiemus Posted May 23, 2012 So far it's been "Tits McGee" for Sasara (who is now on lay-away to go to another home) and "Golden Eyes" for Marisa. LOL! You know, I actually sometimes call Agatha "Boobsy McBoobsalot"! (Usually when sewing for her, since that's when I most want to curse her improbable cleavage.) Glad I'm not alone in making fun of my own DDDy girl. XD In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
Nightmare Tea Posted May 23, 2012 I always rename... I get more attached if I do so. All the names I gave are 5 letters long, and don't start with the same letter. I also prefer it if they don't end with the same letter, but that's kind of difficult.
Guy9394 Posted June 29, 2012 the one i have is SQ Lab Hitomi. I wanted to give her a maid look. I guess naming her May is very obvious to some anime fans. If I get a 2nd DD, she's going to be June.
Ara Posted June 29, 2012 I'm usually not a fan of keeping the name, but with DD it's different. My BJDs are all supposed to represent characters I had already or developed shortly before getting them. I'm not buying them only for their looks (i.e. because they are pretty) but because they look like character XY. DDs however are a whole different story since I buy these mainly for the look. No set characters or whatever, I just like the way they look and want one or two for photo purposes. I know I will still get kinda attached to them, but it won't be the same. That's not making them any less awesome, they will just serve a whole different purpose...the one of having a doll I can dress and let look different every time and just how I want it right now. I'm still thinking about a suitable name for my DDH-06, but if I ever get a Yoko I'm quite sure she will stay Yoko...it's hard to stop using this name after such a long time. milkytea Posted June 30, 2012 I wouldn't rename a doll if I were going to keep a pre-planned character, but if I'm not going to do so I'll rename her. I generally don't like to have character dolls, because it doesn't feel personalized to me. :
LordNoir Posted July 1, 2012 The only "rules" I have with my DDs is that their names must be Japanese. I have lots of BJDs, none of which have names of asian origin. So when I decided to add the more anime styled DD dolls to my collection, I did a little photostory of my resins looking up DDs and saying how those "asian girls have an interesting appeal." I've renamed all my dolls, but that's not really saying much since all but one of my current DDs are customs rather than limited characters. BlueShuShu Posted July 5, 2012 I have a DD Yukino, I named her Euphemia(Euphy for short) I like the name Yukino, but I don't think id want to call my girl that + I like the idea of naming her what I want her to be called, since she was new with me so a new name is ok(New life, new name). I love her sooo much!
