General Questions

So I already have a head and eyes in the mail so I'm almost a partial DD owner lol. Anyway I just had a few questions.

1. How much crap do you guys (and I mean guy guys lol) for collecting dolls?

I'm just a little concerned with the social repercussions of my new endeavor. I'm not the best with women as it is, so i'm a little concerned with what might happen if they find out I have a 1/3 doll in my closet lol. Which leads me to my second question...

2. Where's a good place to store one of these girls?

We're in the process of finishing my room...rather starting it lol. My plan is to have Revy sit on a shelf in some cool pose in my walk-in closet once my room is finished. I guess my question is as long as I keep the body in the box, can I pretty much store her anywhere out of the light? You know somewhere my close-minded family can't find her? We had an hour long lecture about my life just b/c I made a Halo Reach plush (let me know if you'd like to see it lol). And I was asked if I was twelve and laughed at for making a Soundwave hoodie. Sooo you can see why I'm a little concerned about owning a doll. It's not gonna stop me lol, but I am just a little curious if others have encountered this problem and how they've dealt with it.

Thanks for any help. I really like this forum, everyone seems so supportive and just fun. It so cool to see all the pictures. Course just makes me want more lol. Like when I see Scribble's Kitsune(?) I want to make a Horo DDS lol

Congrats on your almost-DD! XD

1) I haven't received any crap for owning dolls, and most people know I have them. Coworkers and friends seem interested more than anything, and most girls who see them want one immediately. In fact, when my mom saw my Mari she fell totally in love and ended up with her own doll. She posts pictures of her on FB all the time and everyone LOVES her. It's kind of funny, there is now a large group of middle-age women absolutely dying for a Dollfie.

2) Yes, as long as your doll is out of direct light you should be fine. Mine live on top of my dresser and as long as you aren't, you know, storing them on a windowsill there should be no really issues.

Are you working on Revy from Black Lagoon?

@ alphakitty: yeah that's the plan. I'm pretty nervous about doing the face up though. And when I get the courage to try that tattoo on her shoulder...that will be interesting lol.

And you're a girl...so collecting dolls is more "acceptable" lol. Thanks for the input regardless.

I only rarely take Yuriko out in public (mostly because I'm afraid of anything happening to her), but the few times I have, I didn't receive any odd looks or comments. Of course whenever I've had her outside I've had my camera and was obviously taking pictures and using her as a model, so maybe that might have made it seem more acceptable? Some of it obviously depends on where you are and who you're around, but attitude can affect people's perceptions a lot, too. If you seem nervous and defensive, people will pick up on that, but if you act like it's perfectly natural to be carrying a doll around with you you're a lot less likely to be given flack for it. Also, most women I know like a guy with a sensitive side, and all of the women I know are crazy for dolls, so I think it's more likely to be an ice breaker than a turn off.

As to storage, Yuriko mostly sits on my bedside table when I'm not interacting with her, and she seems to be just fine. She's out of direct sunlight, but not hidden away in a box or anything.

For storage, I keep all my girls on top of my dressers in my bedroom. They don't get any direct light on them there. So anywhere not in direct sunlight should be fine for them.

As for the issues you get from people for being a guy and having dolls, I don't catch much flak. I take mine outside all the time, to parks, in the yard, to friends houses, to meets, etc. Yes, I do get the occasional glance or weird look but frankly, WHO CARES? Some of my close friends don't understand my hobby but they don't give me lip about it. Others are actually interested in them. My parents are both pretty into it. As for potential dates, thats another "who cares" for me. If I bring someone home and they freak out over seeign my girls, then I want nothing to do with them anyways. If you can't accept me for me with all my hobbies and such, hit the bricks.

And just so you know, I'm a guy.... 41 years old, single, was married once, own my own house and car. I'm also 5-11, about 240 pounds, shave my head and have a ghoatee. So most people don't give me too much slack for having dolls. LOL

Don't worry about what others think. Do what YOU like and have fun.

:) I have a question what kind of clothes and shoes that fit the DDS body? l hope this is the right place to ask this.

The DDS feet are the same as the DD feet so a size shoe you want will be from 7cm to 7.9cm inside length.

As for clothing, anything that fits the DDII M-bust or S-bust girls should fit fine. Most SD13 stuff should work as well but it may be a bit loose on a slim DDS body.

Most SD13 clothing fits the DDS, but if she's an S bust I wouldn't recommend SD13 strapless dresses: I had one slide right off my Akira.

No prob! Depending on which bodysuit you get, the DD sized ones should work. The DDdy wont tho because the DDdy body is WAY larger and curvier than the DDS. I'd stick to the DD sized one there.

1. People don't give me crap for it. But not that many people know I'm into dolls either since I rarely take them out of the house.

2. Just don't have them in direct sunlight all the time. Otherwise, you'll be pretty much fine wherever you have them. Also, keep in mind that heat and humidity can affect dolls too. Mainly in the clothes wearing department. If you have your dolls wearing all black stuff that isn't lined with white and you don't have a body stocking underneath, they may stain. But if you take them out in heat or humidity with those same clothes, I've noticed staining can occur even faster.

thanks for the advice everyone.

So I came across the prototype image for the new Power Girl Bishoujo statue...and now I'm considering making my first DD Kara Starr (Power Girl) lol. And my mom has previously said that comic books are a more "normal" hobby than anime...so I could just say it's a really cool/nice action figure and I'm golden.

Anyway, I browsed some of the other bjd companies and came across this http://www.iplehouse.net/shop/step1.php?number=869 . I thought I read somewhere that size 8-9 will fit a DD? Does anyone know if you can get iplehouse stuff stateside, or do you pretty much have to order it from Korea. A package from Korea would send up red flags here lol.

I have a 8-9 Iple wig. The DD heads vary a bit in size. On some, it will fit. On others, it's a bit small. You may want to try a 9-10 size. I don't believe that they have a US distributor, so you'd either have to buy from them or get it secondhand.

As another guy in the hobby, I think I may have been lucky so far. Granted I have never taken them out in public, but of my friends that know about them they have never said anything bad. Of course, this may vary by friend. Since most of mine are also fellow fans of one thing or another they get that it's just another hobby and don't seem to think much of it. Even ones that I thought would think it was strange seemed mostly unfazed by it. They usually seem to think it's more funny that I was worried about it than that I have them. Most of my relatives don't know about it, though. >.>

And if people you know are bothered by it or think it's strange, I think it's great to know that there is a large and welcoming community here. Even though I started with resin BJDs, I never felt unwelcome in this hobby and I think the community makes up a great portion of how enjoyable the hobby can be.

And as the others have said, just keep them out of direct sunlight for long periods and always be aware of the clothes they are wearing. They stain super easy. Don't assume clothes by Volks themselves will be safe. They almost never are. >.

Why? It's South Korea. The US is friends with them.

Only way to get Iplehouse stuff stateside is if you get lucky to find someone who bought it and is willing to sell it to you used. A LOT of the doll stuff makers are overseas, honestly. They're most likely going to be Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, or Hong Kong. Since you're in the US, you don't have to worry about getting charged customs fees from any of those places. Only thing you have to worry about really is shipping can sometimes be expensive since a lot of them use EMS (Express Mail).

Most of Coolcat's bodysuits are universal DD/DDDy fit as they are super stretchy. They fit DDS just fine, even S bust, although they are a little loose around the bust area in that case.

As for the "Being a guy with dolls" thing goes, I've never received any flak for having them when I've taken them to public places. The closest thing to flak I've ever had in those situations is just impatient people grumbling that it takes me a few minutes to set up for pictures. Some of the people I know tend to consider it wierd, but they thought I was wierd beforehand anyway. That and those people also have a predisposition to finding dolls to be creepy, so I ignore their commentary. My actual friends think it's cool.

One time at the zoo, a little girl tried to approach my Mio, her father stopped her and told her that I was a professional photographer... lol I love it when parents pay attention to what their kids are doing, even if he was pretty incorrect about my photography skills. Then again, even if I were a trained professional, I would never call myself such things, as I'm too modest and am a firm believer in that there is always more to learn.

As for "storage", they sit/stand/hang out wherever they feel like in my room, out of direct sunlight. It's interesting trying to find a place to sit sometimes, since they like to take over my chair and/or bed on occasion

21 DD girls: Mio, Marina, Yui, Yoko, Nia, Lily, Arisu, Akina, Momo, Arisa, Yukina, Ayaka, Niimi, Eri, Millefeuille, Ekisu, Chitose, Miyabi, KOS-MOS v.4, Hatsune Miku and God Eater Alisa. 2B in a hopeful future.

As a brand new mdd owner I'm glad I browse through these. Didn't know they were so weak against long exposure to the sun.

It's because it's plastic. A LOT of plastic products are affected by sun exposure. The sun can cause bleaching and/or yellowing. DDs are made out of vinyl, which is just a type of plastic.
