Petition for a male DD

Recommended Posts

I'm curious about the "girls only" supporters and how having guy DD would negatively affect the line of girl DDs. Maybe I just don't get it.

^This!

It's comprehensible when people aren't interested in any male DDs, but I don't understand the ones who are strictly against it. Noone forces you to buy or even look at them and if it makes others happy, why not? Okay, maybe there is a good reason I haven't noticed so far... >.<

I signed too, but Tamayuki was a bit put out that he couldn't sign as well.

I'm curious about the "girls only" supporters and how having guy DD would negatively affect the line of girl DDs. Maybe I just don't get it. I'm a girl and I've personally gotten tired of the way too common fact that if I want nice looking dolls that they have to be girls. Even Barbie has Ken.

Other than Volks' inability to keep up with demand becoming even more obvious, I don't see how it would have any real negative effects. I have no problem with the idea or the petition, personally. I just don't see myself buying any male DDs.

However, I do hope the petition works out for all of you. Anything that helps Volks see the demand and fandom of DDs outside Japan is a good thing!

I'm not personally interested, myself, and Yuriko certainly doesn't see the point, but as far as I'm concerned anything that adds variety, and by extension broadens the market, must be a good thing. Hopefully, if the demand increases enough they will be able to afford a larger staff and upgraded production capacity. I signed just because I know there is such a great demand. Plus I'd love to see what people would do with boys.

I think Volks would be very confused if you told them to make a male DD.

See, many of the limited girls they make originally came from Eroge. And given how male characters are treated in such games... A guy DD would come out looking like a gray silhouette with no faceup!

I'm personally indifferent to male DDs right now. Until I see how Volks designs them, I see no need to get excited about the potential idea. To tell you the truth, I don't even like most male resin dolls. The only male resins I like are a few of the male SDs and also the male Iplehouse dolls. I guess I'm just incredibly picky about how dolls look, especially male dolls. Maybe it's because I grew up in the days where Barbie's Ken NEVER had "real" hair. His hair was always plastic molding. I thought he looked terrible because of that. I hated him.

Anyway, I have a feeling male DDs are low on Volks' priority right now. We may potentially never see them. Here's my reasoning:

I have the feeling that most (again, not all) Super Dollfie buyers in Japan are women, so Volks was probably hoping to get new types of people into dolls with DDs. See, I believe Volks aims their Dollfie Dream dolls at male otaku in Japan. I know the audience is certainly broader than that, but I'm just looking at the types of dolls that come out.

Why? A large number of DDs are from eroge (adult visual novel video games). The ones that aren't are usually from "moe"-type anime (for instance, the Haruhi and K-On girls) or anime that's just in general pretty popular (the Evangelion girls). Also, notice that DDs have a more anime-type styling to them (bigger eyes, longer legs, etc) while Super Dollfies are more realistic.

Male otaku, in general, are probably less interested in male dolls. They want girls that they see as cute or sexy or both. If you look at the types of anime figures that are released in Japan, most of the nicer ones are of girl characters. Again, ones that are cute or sexy or both. Figures of male characters are released, but they are either fewer and farther between (the more expensive ones) or they are the cheaper types of figures (Figmas, Nendroids, other types of figures that cost less than 5,000 yen) that can generally be in more action poses and are made for having fun with more than sitting in your room to look pretty.

Again... the target audience *is* larger than male otaku, but since I believe they're the target audience, that's what we tend to see DDs released for. And that's why I'm not sure there will ever be a male DD. If they do have some, I suspect they may be fewer and farther between, like those more expensive male figures I mentioned in the previous paragraph.

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

I think im one of a few who feels like DD's should be kept as girls only.

Nope, you are not alone. I wholeheartedly feel DD's should be kept female as well.

I signed.

I don't know if I'd ever buy a male DD (I suppose I'd have to see the end product) but I think there's obviously a chunk of the fanbase that would really love to see it. I wish you luck!

I can't understand why there'd be issues with male DD's detracting from the already existing female line. However, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I can really understand why some wish not to buy a male DD yet I cannot see why they are against it. Why should someones personal likes and dislikes limit other people choices;

If the product name is what bothers you, meaning you dont wanna see a male character entitled as Dollfie Dream then, maybe Volks could make a new brand name for them?

I'm not interested in male DDs myself, and I'm not planning to support a petition for them at this time because I don't want to see the efforts of the design and production teams split their efforts from the current focus of the line. That's my opinion because I don't feel that Volks has the capacity or will increase their capacity to add male DDs without doing less for the female DDs.

I just wanted to add my thoughts in response to the comments about why anyone would be opposed to male DDs. It's hard to be sure I've chosen the right phrasing to convey my intended tone, but I'm not trying to be rude or mean.

Rather than wanting potential-male-DD-hobbyists denied, I feel the way that I do because I don't want less effort/fewer products/longer wait times/etc. for current-and-potential-female-DD-hobbyists.

I'm just wondering, why hasn't someone just sculpted a chest and torso for a DD in the same way we get things like the peapod dance feet, peach-pai chest and the sqlabs hands. At least, instead of waiting for/asking volks to make something, which would, as milkytea said, pull resources from making new DDs.

I mean, it's not like they can't wear the SD guy clothes that are out now.

I am against it becuase I feel the whole meaning to the Dollfie Dream would be lost. When Volks first rolled these out, they were intended for Male Collectors. (I'm guessing this is why they are so sexy , and introducing a male dollfie dream would just defeat the whole idea behind it. I don't know if what I said makes any sense, but hopefully you will get the idea.

I don't see a need per-se for peach pai's or physically accurate female genitalia option parts for DD's, but they still exist.

I think it would be interested to a company like Peapod or maybe SQLabs try to make customizable "male" parts to interchange with the DD body. The problems that might arise is getting the resin batches to match. I know that my Peapod ballet feet don't match my DD's 100%, but I could always get them airbrushed to match if I wanted to.

Even with custom body - at least lower and upper torso - it still won't be a "male".

It will be a slim bishōnen

Obitsu get away with offering male options chests/some abdomen sizes because some of the legs and arms they offer as parts are thick enough to look at least bishounen. I think the DD legs and arms are too slim to carry off male torsos. Maybe we should ask Volks for male option skin parts rather than a full doll? (I know more variety in body parts would be lovely: anyone else fancy a toned, strong DD girl?).

I'd put my Obitsu male torso on my DDdy and DDII to show what I mean (it stops just under bust) but its hard vinyl, and it took such pains (a hammer) to get the chest internals into it, and the arms to line up, that I can't face removing it tonight. >.<

I am still on the fence about a male DD. I can see why some people are against it: the male body would be launched using limited character releases, which would take away from the number of girl characters released. This would continue even after it was made available as a base body/parts. On the other hand, with the exception of Obitsu male body part mix and match or their actual male dolls, there is no other opportunities for a male vinyl doll, so Volks is the natural place to seek other options.

I've already successfully made a male DD, and already have plans to make more. I honestly don't care one way or the other if Volks makes a male DD or not. We have a saying in my local doll group, " If you don't find one exactly as you like it, modify it until it's exactly what you want." Volks even has tools available in their store specifically for modifying their dolls, and encourages customization among collectors.

Volks is having trouble keeping up with demand for their dolls as it is, and they know that they can ignore the idea of a boy DD and still sell tons and tons of dolls. If they do release a male DD, they risk very very low sales because again, they focus primarily on the market they currently have (mostly guys.)
