modifying eyes shape? for SQ Lab resin head

Recommended Posts

Guy9394

I really loved the way Persona characters' eyes are drawn and would like to do something similar. They have a pointy start at the edge of the eyes and slowly expand outwards. Seems like the corner of the eyes need to be "expanded" to pull this off.

I think I have acbleepulated sufficient courage to do a mod. Any tips on how to change the eye shape for a SQ Lab resin head? What kind of tools do I need? Is it difficult?

BTW, I might use SQ Lab EI-XX series eyes for this. Anyone have these eyes? I would really like to see how they look before I go ahead and order them.

Since I'm familiar with modding resin heads (I'm BJD collector and customizer) I can give you a few tips

Depending on how much you want to mod you need several things:

- sandpaper (for small moddings and smoothing out rough edges)

- a dremel or scalpell or both (for heavy moddings and if you want to remove a lot of resin)

- a mask for protection, resin dust is VERY unhealthy

I think you should go for the sandpaper method since re-shaping eyes is a delicate thing and can go wrong when using a dremel or scalpell for the first time, especially since you only want to change their shape a bit.

Sanding eyes itself is not difficult in my opinion.

You should at least use two different kind of sandpaper, a medium and very fine grit.

Nowadays I mostly use sanding sponges from 3M (Superfine and Microfine, maybe Fine too would be my best bet here), but you can use any normal paper too.

How rough or fine the paper is is determined by the number (low number -> very rough, fine number -> very fine and smooth).

Start with the medium paper and start sanding the parts you want to re-shape, slow and steady.

If you think the form is okay, start smoothing it out with the fine one till everything is smooth and you can't see or feel any scratches.

Tip: don't use a very hard paper, it might take off a lot of resin very fast bit it also makes TONS of scratches while doing so. Take a medium one that is not too rough and take it slow, it might take longer but in the end it's easier to smooth out. Also don't change the sanding direction too often, better sand in one direction.

Tip 2: Use a watercolor pencil to draw the shape of the eye on the head you want to have in the end. It helps in determining how much you need to remove.

Also constantly put an eye in to check if it looks okay.

Keep in mind to sand in a well ventilated area and have a bowl with water nearby, so you can remove dust and maybe even wet the sandpaper a bit. I prefer sanding dry though.

I hope I could help you
