Are your Dolls insured?

Recommended Posts

katnaper

I don't know if this is the right place for this or not (if not, please let me know and I'll delete it) but I've been wondering about this for a while. Considering that collecting DDs (and Resin dolls in general) is an expensive hobby, I wonder if anyone insures their collection at all? Has anyone actually taken out a separate insurance for their dolls/collections or are they just covered as part of, say, general home insurance or something. I know that won't really cover the loss of a doll since a lot of them are Limited and the time, effort and emotion invested in them can't be monetized but I am curious as to what people in the forum have done to protect their dolls (and er, investment).

I hope I don't sound overly pessimistic and I hope I'm not offending or upsetting anybody for bringing up what I know to be such a dreadful topic but I would really like to know. In fact, as my DD collection grows, its been kinda weighing on my mind. I'd really appreciate any input you guys can give.

Thanks

I haven't gotten insurance on my girls (kinda stupid now that I think about it), I recall this topic coming up on Den of Angels before. I remember the majority of people either let their home insurance cover it, or got a specific insurance rider for the dolls under their home insurance. There may have been a few that got specific collectibles insurance, but those were probably people with large and/or particularly rare collections of dolls.

I'm thinkin' for me, with only two girls, a rider for them would be sufficient. If I had more than say, six or so, I might at least look into the benefits of collectibles insurance, though whether or not I went for it would depend on cost versus benefits. If I were a Wolfheinrich or Toel-uru with an army of limited edition girls (ha, only in my dreams!), then getting the special insurance would practically become a must-have.

So, TLDR: Small collection, a rider under home insurance is fine. The more you have and/or the rarer girls you've got, the more likely collectibles insurance would be worth the trouble.

I'm thinking I'd be falling into this category not that I have a rare collection but the number of grils I have is certainly growing. Add to that the other stuff me and my husband collect (Resin boys, MSDs, Anime figures, Gunpla and ships) I guess we really should be getting a separate one. I wonder if anyone here who lives in Canada can point me in the right direction.

After I bought my Sasara, my parents have been talking about getting insurance for them. She cost a lot of money because I bought her from someone else. Since then I got another girl, so I now have three and they have been inquiring about insurance. Most likely this year they will add some kind of insurance protection for my dolls. The insurance agent that we use also told them that my clothes for them could be put on as well if I wanted to. I will probably only put the official Volks outfits and shoes on it though.

In my country I never heard about insurance for collectibles, only general purposes insurances... I was already thinking on research on this, but have not started.

I let my doll and my figures on a very visible place, so I am a little worried.

My dolls are covered under my renter's insurance, along with my husband's musical equipment, my expensive clothing, and our electronics. This is something I've discussed with our insurance agent. I don't have enough of the dolls to warrant a separate policy or rider.

Aw. My parents have known their agent for many years, my guess is over 15 years now? So he already knew about them and actually had wanted to see them. I suppose that's why my parents had no problem talking about it with him. Regardless, you should not feel embarrassed! It is their job to insure your items, and it's also their job to be professional about it as well.

Yeah, in the end it doesn't really matter what they think so long as they get your girls covered. Besides, I bet he/she's seen people try to insure way weirder things.

for me, I asked my insurance about additional coverage such as collectables. I did have to add extra money for it, but in the case of loss or damage, I get full "market value" back for all items.

This covers all my figures/robots/dolls/diciest cars/music instruments...

I was investigating this a bit since Mr jadepixel has a lot of cameras/photo gear.

What the photo forums recommended was getting a separate line of insurance, not attached to your home policy. A couple folks found that when they had to make claims for damaged photo gear, their home insurance policy was cancelled! And that's a huge hassle to deal with. Traveler's Insurance was the one many folks in the USA recommended for their photo gear specifically.

If you want to leave them under your home/rental policy, take lots of photos or video to dobleepent your collection, and keep copies off site in case the worst happens.

Wait. A lot of us take photos of our girls and their stuff like crazy anyway, and load them to either services like Flikr or private servers to share them. So, this photography habit a lot of us have gotten into has a potential benefit? Heh, awesome. So next time I see someone say they have a new girl and want pic spam, I should tell them that they *need* to get pictures ASAP for insurance purposes!

I've actually tried to add my DD and resin collection to our policy, and was told that USAA doesn't cover dolls, because they're too high of a risk. Stamps amd coins, yes, but not dolls. I tried to explain that they aren't porcelain, but different types of plastic, but the guy just wouldn't hear it.

So I need to find a separate company who will insure them. We move often enough that it's a real necessity.

I've never thought about insurance on my figurine and doll collection but now it sounds like a really good idea. I could probably buy a car or two with all of this stuff...

When I changed insurance companies last year I asked my agent about collectables. I know it's very different depending on the country you're in, and there's American companies that do nothing BUT insure collectables.

Anyway, my agent said that I'd be best off talking to an insurance broker that specialized in collectables and that an appraiser would likely be needed. But this hobby is so specialized... It is very important to dobleepent ALL of your items in case something happens.

It would probably take me a full day to do this. Taking photos of the full dolls and their boxes and everything (unboxing photos certainly help in this respect) but some things are simply irreplaceable if they're destroyed regardless of the money... Either way, it can get expensive if an appraiser is needed, so I haven't looked much further.

Another thing is too, some insurance may only cover the items if they're generally kept behind glass (like in a display case) and other stipulations like that.

And for those with renter's insurance or house insurance, it's best to double check that your collectibles are covered or add in something for them (like you would for jewellery and antiques)

When I checked with my insurance they said that each doll needs to be stripped naked and laid out next to each other to prove that I have All the bodies as if I don't picture them together it could be said that I just have one or two bodies and am swapping the heads on them >_

I have a gorgeous family of DD girls

No, but we have general household insurance and I assumed they would be covered by that.

Yes, I know what they say about assuming....

I think i'm going to check it out for sure!

I think it is covered as long as you have dobleepented prices and such.

I'd asked my statefarm agent about collectors insurance for my dolls, but it pretty much can't happen

I need receipts for everything :/

Which is tough in the secondhand market...

I've bought a lot of my dolls from friends and none of my paypal receipts say anything about dolls I always just say like "payment from knibitz" but nothing about what it's about

So I lucked out

about 7K in dolls, completely uninsured

My renters kinda covers them... but not really (my policy covers less than two times the cost of my dolls >_>), if my house burns down, but it won't protect them if they're lost or taken while I'm out.

Wouldn't Volks's listed prices (also printed on their boxes) be acceptable in lieu of a receipt? There must be a way to insure them without needing receipts, because seriously in a lot of collectables there are no receipts! Plus what you buy it for and what it's worth can vary a great deal!

Nope. They need proof that I bought it too, it's not just value :/

I think the thing that bothers me about insurance is they'd probably either give you how much it cost new or, more likely, some sort of calculated depreciation. I know for a fact that when I move, the movers will consider my dolls depreciated. Right. Except I have Rin, one of the more expensive DDs, who is worth a few grand on the aftermarket. (We need an eyeroll smilie. Ha!)

That really depends on the terms of your insurance. My policy covers replacement value, not original value or estimated depreciated value. That's important if you have something that might appreciate or be difficult to find.
