Aiyalia Posted July 6, 2012 I plan on making my first DD look like Ruri. This is her original base design from a few years back. http://rurikururugi.deviantart.com/gallery/9049409#/d1y5yj6 Only problem will be her necklace, which is an ankh. http://rurikururugi.deviantart.com/gallery/9049409#/d2wwi5u
Poofiemus Posted July 7, 2012 Cool! What head mold are you looking at? SQ Labs Ayumi is what sprang immediately to mind for me, but seeing as she's your character you'd know best. As for the necklace, your best bet may be to do it "Baldylox Style": get the charm and the chain separately, so you can make the chain to the right DD length. Should be a *lot* easier than trying to find a necklace already sized for 1/3 dolls. There's bunches of results if you do a Google shopping search for "ahnk charm"--seems the best results are if you set it to sort price from low to high, as the teeny ones appear to be less expensive on average. Looking forward to seeing her come together! In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

And thanks for the tip about her necklace.
Poofiemus Posted July 7, 2012 I just looked it up...Good god, they are expensive. ._. But I do agree with you that it matches my OC perfectly. And thanks for the tip about her necklace. Oh, you mean SQ Labs? The big reason for the price of those heads is because they're sculpted and then hand-cast by, as I recall, just one person. (She may have gotten someone recently to help out, but I'm not totally sure on that. I do know one person does all the sculpting for certain though.) Still, compared to getting a limited edition DD head on the aftermarket, it's actually not too bad. ^^;; While blank standard heads are around $40, the limited edition ones are easily $250. The closest DD match to SQ Labs Ayumi aesthetically would probably be Tamaki, and, being one of the most elusive "unicorns" would definitely go for significantly more than that. So, your cost options kind of go like this: Standard head: Least expensive, but most limited options--all of five molds to choose from. SQ Labs: Bit more expensive, about 20 options. Limited DD head: Ranges from somewhat to excruciatingly expensive, but the most options: 60+. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

I can ask my friend if he is willing to spend that much on the Ayumi head for my DD, but if he isn't, which of the following two heads do you think would work better? This http://www.volksusa.com/hdd03eo.html or http://www.volksusa.com/hdd02eo.html?
Poofiemus Posted July 7, 2012 Definitely the 02! The shape of the eyes and the mouth makes a lot more sense for her character design than the 03. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
Kumi Posted July 7, 2012 Sorry, are You sayin' SQ Labs heads are expensive? 90$ for a blank head and 20$ shipping? You know, I'm living in a relatively poor country and I don't see that. BTW it's a very common price for a resin doll head. Volks blanks in very limited variety are for 42$ and when You add the body (~230), eyes (~10), wig (~30), clothes (hmm... much) faceup (50?) etc etc the difference is imho negligible And SQ Lab has much more interesting heads to choose from. It's expensive when I don't have a job and am a stay-at-home-mom. ^^; I tend to be frugal about things, hence why I make my own clothing (despite being very amateur) for my dolls and I do my own face-ups for them. I am having trouble finding a body for her since Volks is sold out...again.
Kumi Posted July 7, 2012 Ah. I see. Still, I would save a little longer. DDH-02 is a difficult head in my opinion. Her facial expression is quite serious and it's not easy to change her into something else. Unfortunately, Volks doesn't give us much choice in option heads... I was thinking more of SQ Labs Misty head. I think her features are more mature and defined than that of the Ayumi head.
Kumi Posted July 7, 2012 Much depends on the faceup. I personally think that Ayumi is the "oldest" or "most mature" but Misty is a very fine head. I like it too. From the newer sculpts, also Silvia is quite interesting.

From the newer sculpts, also Silvia is quite interesting. Silvia is good too. Based on the photos, the Misty head looks a bit thinner and more adult/mature-like. Ayumi has somewhat rounded cheeks which gives me the impression of a child. Doesn't exactly help when there are no photos of an unpainted Ayumi head.
zakka Posted July 24, 2012 Maybe the new DD07 will be a good option for this project?
