Dollfie Dream box styles and sizes

Recommended Posts

I've seen a few people ask about this before so I decided to snap some pics and let people who haven't seen the different styles of boxes next to each other get a good look so they know what Volks has done with boxes for their DD's.

First up is a photo of all the different sizes and styles I've seen so far. Now this isn't a comprehensive pic by any means because I'm sure there may be other sizes out there for character girls besides the ones shown here. But I think this is a good cross section of boxes sizes and styles.

Looking at the fronts of the boxes, from left to right we have:

Rei Ayanami's orange box, DDI body release

Mai Shiranui's yellow box, DDdy body

Volks DDdy body box, body only

Yoko Litner character box

Saber Extra character box

Here is a shot of the same boxes, just from a side view.

Here we have the good old plastic, cheapo, yellow and clear Volks body box. All default bodies you buy ( or used to buy ) from Volks are packaged in these boxes. So if you order a DDII or DDdy body, this is the box you'll get. You can see there are designs in the plastic, you can see them better in person than in these pics.

The front of the box:

And the label, this is the DDdy body. They also have these for the DDII.

Next up we have the Image Character boxes. Most, if not all, character girls like Mai, Rei, Mashiro, Lucy, etc. all come in this style box. It's basically an upgraded version of the yellow plastic box we just saw. It actually kept the same designs on the sides as those plastic ones.

On the left is Rei's older box in orange. To the right is Mai's yellow box. The older DD's came in the orange boxes but they were switched over to yellow when the newer DDII bodies arrived. Maybe a few of the early DDII girls were in orange boxes but I'm not 100% sure on that. And so far, I think all these boxes are the exact same size.

DSC_6849 by balldylox, on Flickr

And the sides showing the labels. All the character girls will have stickers on their boxes showing them off and explaining who they are and the series they come from.

One big difference in these boxes is that unlike the clear plastic ones, these come with a board that the DD rests on and it tied to for transport. They also come with a bag that the DD body and head are in, and a wig box, bag and hairnet for the wig. All the characters clothing and accessories slide under the tray in the box so the girl can be seen thru the front windows.

7517617624_33919cc7ae_z.jpg

DSC_6851 by balldylox, on Flickr

Now we get to the big dogs! These boxes are very special and totally different from the other character girls boxes. They have graphics all over the outer box sleeve instead of just stickers. And the overall size is a lot larger. For these two, their weapons are what caused the boxes to be larger.

7517612002_9523a11c52_z.jpg

DSC_6852 by balldylox, on Flickr

Unlike all the other boxes, these have trays that slide out of the cover sleeve and are made of heavy duty cardboard and colored in silver and gold. As you can see here, Saber's box is the same width as Yoko's but it's longer and deeper.

7517569662_57fdca95dc_z.jpg

DSC_6853 by balldylox, on Flickr

But just like the other girls boxes, they include the cardboard sleeve the body and head rest on and the wig casing. And in Saber's case, she also got these boxes to carry to her huge sword and her armor for her feet and legs.

So there's all the styles I own. I hope this helps people out a bit on their questions. And if you have a box that's different in size or color or style, please feel free to post pics of it here!

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

The MDD body comes in similar box to the clear yellow one, but smaller and in pink. I think someone mentioned having received one in clear plastic too but I wouldn't know about that.

My DD2 WS came in one of those yellow boxes though!

Wow Saber's box is really huge! I've heard it being like the biggest box yet but wow. lol

Thanks for the comparison! It was really nice to see the differences.

EDIT: pictures added

Great write up!

Will add to this: new Sabers' boxes VS classic-Saber box

Threw in MDD box for more sizing idea. So far looks like this black monolith is bigger than Billy's Yoko box.. at least from the front width view

Arturia's box has the least art - overall black with blurry floating sparks/petals. The logo appears ONLY on the front, you won't see it anywhere else. Not much in terms of any branding in general - no Volks logo, no DD logos, nada!

7518211514_dceb8c3339_z.jpg

Can see from the side, Arturia's box is easily the most shallow of the bunch.

Nope, still no signs of her name anywhere, nor any other logos

7518211446_d96cc35536_z.jpg

The box isn't a "slide-out sleeve" kind, but more of generic "pull whole top" up kind. See her name on the very bottom? Thats the only place its listed anywhere! There's also a very teeny tiny Type-Moon hologram sticker

7518211382_c27f41a8ea_z.jpg

Arturia travels with way more stuff, yet in smaller package than Nero. The inside of her box is all solid black

7518211268_692431c54c_z.jpg

She also doesn't come on a piece of cardboard held down with ribbons. She was held in place with velcro straps on a plush lil pillow. Everything else - all armor bits and sword - were stored under the pillow. Nothing was in in lil cardboard boxes, but wrapped in plastic and bubblewrap

Now does anyone have a Lily box for complete set? =P

Just for anyone wondering, I have Nanoha's box, which I know from other people's comparisons is the same type as Yoko's save for the imagery on the outer sleeve. As I recall, Saber Lily, Fate, and I think Nia all came in the same box type.

Saber Extra and Alter V2's boxes, on the other hand. . . dang they're intimidating. Where on earth are you going to put it?

Chise, I didn't know the original Saber had a different box type! I actually wish Nanoha's had a pull-off lid instead of the slider--that stupid sliding thing will slide out *either* end, so it's a real pain to carry, especially if you don't want to risk damage by taping it. If it was the "pull whole top" type, I might strongly consider storing stuff in it, but with that sliding system it just isn't worth the trouble.

In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

Wow Chise, thanks so much for posting those pics! That's exactly what I was hoping for!

I knew what the original Sabers box looked like but I didn't have any way to see how big it actually was. Seeing it next to Extras box helps out bigtime. It may be wider than Yoko's but it's so much slimmer in depth! I wonder why they did it so differently with it's packing? Since she has all that armor, you'd think it would be boxed like Extras was. And I never knew she came on a pillow! That's really cool.... she's just like a resin in that respect.

It's also great to see an MDD box. I knew those were small and pink but I hadn't seen m any pics of them. Thanks for including it.

Poofie, you need to share some pics of Nanoha's box! I'd like to see that one.

Well, saber was the most expensive one up to its release, so it made sense for the packing to be different too.

My guess was that Sabers box was the same as Volks'es SD resin doll boxes of the time (hence the futon, that I think is standard with volks resins) ... atleast the rozen maiden boxes for shinku and suigintou seemed similar.

Personally I only have boxes for MDD's, the typical yellow DD's, Yui's and Sabers special boxes.

I think it is hilarious that MDD Cirno's box is just as big as Yoko's, Mio's, Rina's, etc. She is so tiny!

@Billy - Saber predates Yoko, so perhaps they were still just doing things how they did with resin dolls?

Every year they seem to tweak something or other in everything from their boxes to their models!

All the armor & clothes fit in pretty tight the way they packed it, so there was no issue of it shifting in transit

@Mitsuki - but don't Cirno's wings take up a ton of space?! Plus poofy petticoats always seem to be given massive boxes to contain them

I have saber lily's box. I'll take some photos of it tomorrow if you'd like. Interesting fact: calibur sat in a different box ON TOP of Saber's box when she arrived. It was never stored inside her box.

Saber Lily's box is the same as Yoko's I think.

You're right. It is pretty much the same, the only difference is the "drawer" box is gold, and the outside is a white lily motif. Her name appears along the sides of the box, and it has a little capcom sticker in the bottom right hand corner. Also the warning concerning her wig was taped onto the big bag that her box came it. Here's a pic of Lily (all dressed up) and her box from the day she arrived at my house.

Are the DDS boxes any different in size from the regular DD yellow boxes? I have a DDS, but I got her secondhand without the box, so I have no idea.

Since the DDS bodies have never been available as an entire unit ( everything but the head like the DDII and the DDdy ) they've only come as character girls like Reimu, Marisa, Mariko, etc. I had a Mariko here and she had the same yellow cardboard box that Mai, Mashiro and Mikuru all have. Same size and design.

Now I haven't seen the Touhou girls boxes in person but they have very nicely done boxes if I recall. I wonder if they're the same size as Yoko or Lily boxes? Does anyone have pictures of those boxes to share?

Thanks for sharing the Saber Lily box photo Di Chan! I love that box art.

Kanu and Sakuya from Touhou Project have the yellow DD cardboard boxes. They don't have special slider boxes like Yoko or Lily.

Mio from K-ON has her own special slider box though. It's blue and dark green and has a big picture of her along the front.

My Marisa came in a slider box, but I don't have a Yoko or Lily slider box to compare. It's pretty big -- it had to be long enough to accommodate her broom.

Cirno came in a big silver slide box, and Kud came in an MDD sized pink box (same style as the standard yellow ones). Feena and Haruka both came in the standard yellow boxes, I'll post pictures if I remember when I get home

Yuki and Rina also came in larger slider boxes (the same size as Yoko's) and Akira's box is the same size as the yellow DD boxes with stickers.

I've seen pictures of Reimu and Marisa's boxes and they're the slider type too - probably the same size as Yoko's. Asuka and 2nd version Rei came in the yellow boxes with stickers - they seem to be most common.

There we go, I told you I'd take them "when I got home", even if that was several days after I said it :p

Wow Mahoro, Cirno's box is really huge. I'm getting her soon, I wonder where I'm going to put that. xD

I said I'd post pics up a couple days back too but I've been on a road trip so no luck there. Maybe tonight...

I've only got a few boxes but you've got a pretty variety

I really like the fully designed ones like all the Saber ones.

I'm shopping for a new apartment, and one of my criteria is "storage for all those doll boxes!" Right now they're just sitting in my current living room, I have nowhere to put them. BJD boxes are similar -- big hard boxes that can't be collapsed -- and I have several of those floating around, too.

My downstairs is already filled with figurine boxes and cases of magazine/poster collection. I'm trying to keep all of my DD stuff upstairs but my bedroom is starting to look like a warehouse. T____T
