VMF50 & Angel Philia Discussion Thread (nsfw, doll nudity)

Recommended Posts

Rneiro

I want to write/post a guide for people looking to purchase their first vinyl BJD on here and on Instagram once my university semester ends for winter break. It is only in the planning phase.

I have the Obitsu-Parabox-DollyPop parts mostly covered. The Dollfie Dream part.. requires assistance.

The Angel Philia/VMF50 parts are not covered at all (giggle giggle). You know, because I do not have a pure or non-hybrid AP in my collection.

I need help from other people more experienced than me with these dolls. Is anyone willing to help me with it?

I may be a beginner in this hobby, but I can contribute with my writing and help from other people just as crazy about dolls as I am!

So far, no thread has ever stained any doll 😊 it's a cotton crochet thread and 'mercenerised', which also makes staining unlikely. I'll wash it once I finished another. I had a dark violet on my Leviathan, and it didn't stain at all (I have a black knitted dress on a white resin doll, everything fine, but sock yarn I mostly prewash the garment).

Thank you! I feel nearly sorry. Very nearly 😉

I admit, the knitting is most of the fun for me XD

Oh.. are the garments pre-washed in cold water? I should do the same.

I badly stained Meigana’s stock Obitsu parts with a dark red dress from one of my porcelain dolls after I first got her. That made me paranoid about staining.

I accidentally stained the back of my Dollfie Dream’s head and back side with my pajama pants! Whoops! Oh well. She has new parts now. That made me even more paranoid about staining.

I have always wanted to learn how to knit and sew by hand. My hands have always been very shaky.. -sigh- Perhaps I’ll have more luck with a sewing machine.

Oooh, I feel you about the shaky hands - but I found that I can handle needles well most of the time when I can't use a fine paint brush or pry open a jump ring - I sewed on a bell to a collar instead XD

As the thread runs through my fingers, I think I should notice staining... currently, this one is only blocked (but no color bleeds into the towel I pressed it in) . I'll keep an eye on it. And already have a white one on the needles to wash the darker purples 😉

Et tu, Brute? (You too, Brutus?)

I am trying to practice doing faceups on my blank doll heads, but it feels near impossible because I can’t hold a paintbrush or watercolor pencil in my hand without shaking or hesitating. I don’t have much to say about rings except for ugh.

Do you use a mannequin or bust stand when knitting or painting? I think I could do better if I had my heads on a stable mannequin or bust stand instead of in my open hand.

@samseramsamsam You knitted the outfit yourself that’s so cool. I admire people with creative talent so much. I cannot imagine the time your spend knitting the dress. I wouldn’t have the patience to do it (I’m very lazy 😝).

I took a  few costume design classes in college as a requirement for my theater major. But I remember I enjoy it but when it was time to hand sew I just found it so tedious lol.

I haven’t pick up a needle and thread in more than 10 years. I don’t even remember how to use a sewing machine either LOL

It's actually not so bad, a few days, but I only have a bit of time for knitting in the evenings 😉 I think it would only be about two afternoons if I really invested myself. And depending on the lace pattern! Some are complicated and take longer.

I did no backstabbing XD

Nah, I need to only have the head for painting, but I turn it around quite often. For knitting, I couldn't have it on the doll while working, now and then a dressing test 😉

Traded my spare AP head for two more Miu heads and some spare parts. I have another AP body for the whitey head, but I'm gonna have to hunt down some tan parts or a body.

My new baby type K head made it home. She is currently borrowing the body of one of her sisters. She came with two wigs as gift. I named her Tiffany 💕

De-closeted and dusted off the old AP body (G bust, H everything else, stock Obitsu arms I think?) after I saw an official Angel Philia Sonico on Manda and proceeded to miss out spectacularly on it.

She's still in progress (needs a different styled wig, and her eyes and headphones aren't here yet), but I think the Parabox May head I put on there makes a pretty good Sonico! The inspiration struck as soon as my Christmas bonus hit, and I'm all done shopping for the holiday, so she's going to be VERY spoiled over the next few weeks. A full set of MDD hands on the way, at least 4 outfits, some shoes, some props....

I admit I'm tempted to keep these eyes in her despite the more "canonical" ones on their way...They're so cute... 💕

I think I’m going to build a tan soft skin AP doll..

Do you all think I should be on the lookout for an Obitsu 48 or 50 doll to part out or buy all the parts and build her piece-by-piece like I did for Suzuka?

I estimate it will take at least 3-4 months for doll number 7 to be completed. It could take even longer because AP parts are more expensive and I am only a broke college student.

@Rneiro Tan's tricky, because I believe the frame is also tan. Obitsu only offers their 48-50 girls in whitey, so if you want to buy a full Obitsu girl and just swap the vinyl, any exposed frame bits (knees, elbows, wrists, shoulders) will have a noticeable color difference.

I also haven't seen any tan frames pop up on FaithZ or secondhand yet, so that might just be something you have to live with regardless of how it's assembled, though...

Honestly the difference is not that much. I put two of my tan AP girls (Galaxia and Abuelita) using the whitey Obitsu frame. The frame is just a little bit lighter in color than the AP tan frame. The only thing is that you will have to cut about 2cm or 3cm from the legs frame to fit perfectly on the outer tan parts.

Here is a picture of one of the tan bodies I put together using the whitey Obitsu frame and the second picture if of my girl with the whitey frame and 3 of my girls with the AP tan frame. As you can see the difference if not much. So don’t get discourage she will still look great :)

To answer your question is better and more affordable to buy just the frame parts on it’s own than to buy the whole body. I did that with my whitey AP/Obitsu hybrid and removing the feet, chins, and legs from the 48cm Obitsu body was very difficult (not impossible) but it requires a lot of heating the vinyl and brute force.

@Oculae @MrFjmg03 Then again, building an AP/Obitsu doll piece-by-piece won’t be perfect! I think I can live with the frame and skin colors not matching as long as the doll is full AP on the outside!

It is past time for me to add another doll shorter than or around the height of Meigana and Suzuka. Both Meigana and Suzuka are 50cm. Meaning that 4 out of my 6 dolls are 56.5cm to 65cm tall.

As someone who's been trying to pick up Obitsu parts a la carte, it can be a pain to pick up parts a la carte.

No shop right now (not even Obitsu direct) has all parts in stock and once something returns to stock, something else goes out of stock. It's been pretty frustrating, and the shipping adds up, whether you ship directly or go through a proxy.

I think..... I'm going to try to get her.  Hopefully she'll still be around even after the pre-order period ends.

Were you able to get her? I was hesitating for so long because the exchange rate for HKD is terrible but shes up on Mandarake now so I just grabbed her for $100 less than FaithZ. She'll be my first full AP doll! (I have one Obitsu head on AP body) :)

Well.. I found an Obitsu 48cm body on Y!JA for 12,800 yen. I think I may bid on it if nobody else does. What should I do?? The auction ends on December 31st at 9:28 PM JST.

I am hoping that I can avoid some of the out-of-stock issues by buying parts over a span of 3 to 4+ months.

Edit: In other news, I stuffed my dolls' Angel Philia parts with quilt batting and now they are super soft and squishy! I can't wait to have a full soft skin AP doll stuffed with quilt batting!

Usually if the price is attractive on something, the bulk of the auction happens in the last 5 minutes as a bidding war ensues. You'll need to be awake, or you'll lose. Even if there's not much interest, I end up getting outbid by a nominal amount because the auctions end at a time I'm asleep.

That's a decent price if it's in great condition, though just about a week ago, you could have gotten a brand new one from Parabox for 16,000 with no hassle due to a 20% off sale.

💔

I'll hang around and see what happens in the auction. It's an Azone 48 body in good condition with a few stains and a neck joint that needs replacing.

I was outbid when I was searching for my first Obitsu 50 doll and didn't know of Parabox until after I won and needed a head and replacement parts. Perhaps an Obitsu 50 or 48 will pop up on Mandarake for a cheaper price. Only one of my dolls were purchased new and that was my Obitsu 60, Wilhelmina.
