Friends and family, how they reacted?

Recommended Posts

sharddarkness

Well I haven't noticed a discussion based on this yet so I figured I'd try to be the first. Basically I want to know how your family and friends first reacted to your Dollfie Dreams, was it good or bad? Were your daughters welcomed or rejected?

Guess I should go first since I started this discussion...

I did place some pictures of my girls upon MySpace years ago when I got my first two, nothing too grand really. One of my female friends asked if I had turned gay or something... I think she made the comment jokingly. Well my mom gave them a bit warmer welcome than I expected, of course I was a bit nervous... She was a bit put off on the price, but in the end she's come to love my girls. A bit jealous of their bust sizes and that she didn't have access to them when she was a kid. My aunt and grandma seem delighted in them, granted my grandma hasn't seen them yet. I have place better pictures of them on my Facebook page and there as been a few "likes", but so far no real comments.

I started out with figure collecting way before I got any Dollfies, and my parents have always approved of them (my mom even has a few figures of her own!) so I wasn't too worried about their reaction. However, I didn't expect them to be SO supportive! My first girl was Mari, who I got for Christmas last year. SirNarwhal paid for 2/3rd of her and my parents chipped in for the rest! Even my aunt wanted in on my present but she was paid off by then.

My mom loves them so much that she wants to buy one eventually--and SirNarwhal and my dad and myself are actually getting her one for Mother's Day! She's shown off pictures of mine and all her female friends LOVE them. I feel like they really appeal to women a lot in the US, they bring out the little kid in us. Dolls and dressing them up are such big parts of our socialization, so having a big, fancy one to play with now is pretty damn awesome.

All of my friends have been pretty cool about them too, I've thankfully never gotten any adverse reactions to my collection in general. People who visit my dorm room always seem fascinated by them, and I think I've inadvertently created a few figure collectors. XD

Let's just not bring any of our Dollfies when we visit my mother lest she calls them, "Stupid Japanese crap" like she does the rest of our collection >.<

Ah yes, the family fun of sharing DD's.

At first, my immediate family was like... "Huh?"

I have always collected toys of various types throughout my life.... Star Wars, Transformers, MASK, etc. So when I started into Japanese anime figures, they got used to seeing those quickly.

But having a two foot tall DDdy shaped body in front of my parents was a bit much at first. My Mom was actually more hesitant than my Dad was. He kind of shrugged it off as more of my Japanese silliness. Mom was probably thinking "Why is he playing with dolls now?"

But explaining to them the relative rarity of them as well as the resale values turned my Mom onto the idea of DD's pretty fast. Dad was still like, ok, whatever.

My sister LOVED Manami when I showed her. She wanted one so badly. She even offered to help me do photoshoots and such at first.

As far as friends go, most of them have seen them but I have made no introductions. They were just in my computer room when people dropped by so I didn't bring attention to them much. I'm sure if I did tho, most of them would be pretty understanding, especially the ones who have kids who collect the American Girl dolls. They all seem to enjoy the miniature accessories that go with the AG stuff so that could be my way in with them. HA HA!

Nowadays, my parents are way more supportive of the girls, especially my Mom. She is all about finding goodies for them while she does her thrift store shopping. She has found me some really awesome stuff before and she enjoys seeing new clothes and new food items and such I get for the girls.

So thats how it's been for me. Nothing too out of the ordinary.

My mom really likes my dolls, she thinks they're beautiful and she teases me by calling them her grandchildren (this weekend was my first time bringing them up to see her).

My dad seems indifferent, there's interest but I think that's more because he knows I like them so much. ^^;

My sister likes to help me pick out their outfits but she thinks I'm crazy for spending the money I do on them.

Overall it's fairly positive but I do tread carefully when I'm sharing it with new people.

I haven't had any negative reactions yet. Mostly my family has been curious and say they think the dolls are very nice but I can tell they think I'm a little bit crazy to spend so much money.

One of my sisters was more interested in them than the other. She really loved seeing Lily in her armor outfit and spent a long time looking through the Dollie Dream Compilation book as well.

I get the feeling my Mom worries a little about her 42 year old "single" son who spends so much money on these sexy female dolls but maybe I'm imagining it. haha

"Don't worry Mom, I'm not gay and I'm not a pervert. Well, at least I'm not a pervert when it comes to my dolls - maybe for other reasons but let's not get into that now."

My family all thinks I'm crazy. My Mom thinks the dolls are adorable or beautiful, and she encourages me to do faceups and make clothes for them, but the rest of my family thinks they're just stupid... of course, they aren't anime fans and they REALLY aren't doll fans... but they don't openly insult me about them, so that's fine.

It's also fine because I'm smack dab in the middle of a very large, supportive BJD community where I live, so while I can't share this hobby with my family, I can absolutely share it with my friends.

My boyfriend says, "I play with little plastic men in a basement... how could I possibly knock your dolls," (He's a D&D guy)... I just always gloss over the fact that I'm down there playing with him, LOL

Sounds like you got a great boyfriend. Playing D&D together must be great - I'm pretty envious. Never had the chance to play but I bought all the essential 4th ed. book and enjoy reading them.

*******

For those who don't know, D&D doesn't stand for Dollfie & Dream. Its for Dungeons and Dragons.

He is... although not as great as my friend's boyfriend who started collecting dolls with her, LOL...

nah, D&D is a lot of fun, more so than I ever thought... and admittedly... I like buying the shiny little dice.

It is one of my life's goals to play D&D, no joke. I've been fascinated with it since I was like 13, I bought all the books and everything, but none of my friends really wanted to play with me. ;~; You're lucky that you have someone to play with, especially since it's your bf! One day, my dream shall come true.

Sounds like we have that in common. I'm 42 now I've wanted to play D&D since I saw E.T. when it first came out in 1982. I went out and bought the orange box with the basic rule set and some plastic dice. I've recently bought 3 of the books and a number of dice and a velvet dice bag. haha

I know this is way off topic but one last thing.... If you love D&D check out this series of YouTube clips starting with

The dungeon master is one of the main guys at Wizards of the Coast and the players are writers from Robot Chicken. It's not only great for D&D fans but it's really funny.

Be sure to check out the whole series as it's an hour or two long....

I like buying the shiny little dice.

I love all those shiny dice!!!!

Sorry for nerding out there.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Dollfie Dream programing.

Hey, the two of us can play, we just need to find more people here in NYC to play with =P

Sorry to continue with the off topic-ness, but how awesome would it be if we started an online D&D group with the Dollfie board members?!

Back on topic: Now that we have a carrying case, I think we might take one of our girls down to the city for a shoot and see how the dorm-mates react. Should be... interesting. XD They love the parts of our collection that we have down here, but giant dolls are a bit different than PVC figures!

I was in Christmas Tree the other week staring intently at some chairs that were designed for really small children. I was wondering if the scale was close enough so that my incoming Beato would look good sitting in it. My boyfriend asked why I was seriously considering the chair and I confessed I have a 2' doll on the way. He just shook his head, and I promised to keep her in my hobby room with my two Pullips.

He feels uncomfortable around dolls but he wants me to be happy...I'll just leave out the part where the doll is based on a character that supposedly has the power to kill someone over and over again for all eternity...

Perhaps a Dollfie D&D thread should be started... the logistics might be tricky... but it could probably be done, LOL... it would just be a VERY slow game XD

... Oh... and on topic for this thread, my Mom is coming over tonight to help sew more clothes... she's very excited about them XD I love my Mom.

My family doesn't know about Beato, and I'm trying to keep it that way. It's not so much about the doll itself as it is about the money I'm blowing on her.

Some of my friends are really hostile about the DDs, even though they're all figure collectors and have spent similar amounts of money on large non-poseable figures and statues. On the other side, some of my other friends have actually bought DDs since we got ours, and some friends already had BJDs.

my friends were really against it, telling me all these things i could have bought instead like a TV or even a car. but my family was supportive. My brother lent me $400 to get her and my mom gave me the last $150 I needed to finish my payments to get Yoko. My boyfriend who wasn't my boyfriend at the time also gave me $100 for her. After i got her my friends lightened up about it but they still poke fun at me and say one day i'm going to become a "creepy dollfie lady" but I know they are just being silly and do support me. Heck now one of my friends is seriously getting into BJD and bought some dolls from another place and went with me to the Volks store and now is seriously considering getting her own Dollfie Dream. I also got my brother to make the leap and he's getting his own MDD. Maybe eventually a full DD.

I've always generally surrounded myself with people who will be supportive of my hobbies, like with my figure collecting, i have well over 200 now and no signs of stopping and I've had people come into my life who didn't understand, we can just say they weren't in my life for very long.

My family has been supportive of my hobby, my mom doesn't mind them as I paid for them with my own money, my dad thinks they are collectibles and should be left in the box, my brother doesn't mind them and my sister complained they were too expensive. Also, my parents think it's great that because of them I've been learning how to sew better too.

My friends on the other hand, I haven't actually told all of them what I like to play with, but the ones I have, have been accepting of them. Especially my boyfriend, since he helped pay for my saber lily.

This reminds me of one of my friends... she kept ragging on another of our friends who was buying dolls, going on and on about what a waste of money it was, and how she could use it on something practical...

and then I pointed out to her that she has quite the extensive movie collection, and buys at least one new movie every week... and how was that not as pointless as the dolls. She stopped ragging the one friend about it after that XD

I always bring up to people that you can spend YOUR money however YOU please! If buying dolls makes you happy do it? If buying shoes, video games, makeup, porn anything makes you happy, don't let one person who doesn't understand stop you!

Exactly. As long as killing people or burning down old folks homes isnt what makes you happy then go for it. Why should one or two "friends" give you lip over collecting dolls? I'm 40 years old and have no problems telling people I collect them. If they think I'm weird or something, let them think that. I could care less what others think of me anymore. I do what I want to and have fun doing it. Life is a lot easier that way, at least to me it is.
