Question about doll events in NY

I remember reading on Volks blog that they held a Doll Party in NY but haven't since 2010 I was wondering if anyone had any information about that or know if there is anything similar that is held there instead. I know this is a long shot XD but I figured I would ask before planning a trip to go to New York to visit family.

Yeah, VolksUSA hasn't held any sort of Dolpa or anything since 2010. I know of doll (in generic terms) and BJD (probably mainly focusing on resins, what people actually consider BJDs) conventions in California and Texas, but I don't know if there's any in New York.

I thought I remember reading about some things being stolen from the event that happened there? Or perhaps it was another event that I am thinking about... Anyways, I was considering that might have been why there wasn't occasion like that, but I could be wrong entirely.

Funny about the timing on this as we were JUST talking about this at the local doll meet yesterday. One of the girls who lives here went to that one and she said that there were issues with security because the company that was there doing security was an outside contractor the convention place hadn't used before and was pretty lax in their duties. Some people basically snuck into areas they weren't allowed, saw expensive looking dolls ( which were one offs by the way ) and swiped a few. There was also other things like people moving dolls and displays off of tables in order to make room to sit down and eat where you weren't supposed to be eating. I think some stuff got damaged or missing there too.

 

I don't know if the people who stole those one offs got caught or not but the whole mishandling of security made people at Volks VERY mad and they said they'd never hold another one there again... or so goes the popular story. I don't blame them either for being upset about that stuff happening. I'd have been all over that security company for sure.

Thanks for all the info I can understand by that story why they would stop holding that event. I hope they caught the people who took things. Looks like some day ill have to just gather enough courage and go to one in japan XD

The only doll that was stolen from the 2010 NYC Dolpa was an attendee's doll, and it was stolen outside of the convention center when she was waiting for a cab. Her friends were super wonderful, though--they secretly arranged to re-create the stolen doll via the FCS system (with special help from Volks--the stolen doll had been a one-off from a previous event) and presented it to her later. It was a really sweet ending to a bad experience.

 

The event where many dolls were stolen occurred in 2008. Seven display dolls were taken in the night. They were never recovered. That didn't stop Volks from having another Dolpa in that location, though--they did it in 2010, after all.

 

There was no 2011 NYC Dolpa because of the tsunami. There wasn't even the hint of a 2012 NYC Dolpa, although I wanted one so much!! (I went to the 2010 event and it was AMAZING.) I'm not sure why there hasn't been another one, but I haven't given up hope!

No problem~ n_n I remember the event so fondly that I had to throw my 2¢ in.

I just read that Soom (Korean doll studio) is having a booth for the second year at New York ComiCon 2012. And Obitsu has been showing up to conventions in the US as well. Volks needs to step up their game!

 

Lots of little BJD cons are popping up, and this would be a great chance for Volks to be the most 'official' of the lot and steal the show. But back on topic- I'd definitely go for a NY Dollpa, even if I'm on the other coast! Let's hope we get one next year
