Rocking Eyelashes on Your DD

Recommended Posts

Nakitaninja

So at the request of folks on here and because I love my online DD family I am posting a step by step tutorial in text for how to attach eyelashes! I'm not going to redo Nana so I've included some pictures from Volks USA on how to cut the eyelashes appropriately:

1: Gather your materials and try to make you you've not had too much coffee- jittery hands make this task really tough- be warned! My materials included my special hobby cement*, a think gauge needle, cotton swabs, X-acto knife or razor blade and, of course, my eyelashes. <--- I used dark brown because Nana's eye make-up is neither black nor brown so it seemed the most fitting for her coloring and it can go light or dark.

2: TWEEZERS ARE YOUR SECRET WEAPON FOR PERFECTION. I can't get my fingers in to place the eyelashes and I am small person with small hands. There is really no better tool for this job than a pair of decent tweezers.

3. Eyelashes are already sticky on their underside. This is not helpful to you as you are apply them to the upper inside of the doll's ocular cavity. This stickiness can be helpful to hold them in place while you are cutting them. Yes, cutting them.

4. You need to cut the eyelashes evenly into sections. If you try to skip this step your eyelashes may look totally jacked which is completely frustrating. The reasoning behind it is to fit the lashes to your particular doll's eye socket. We all know the head molds are different- using this method ensures that your doll's new lashes look perfect on her without coming too far down into her field of vision and obscuring her eyes.

5. Apply the glue to the inside of the eye socket along the inside of the rim with the eye of the needle. This is the most nerve wracking part of the process. It takes time and you must be careful not to get the glue on the outside of your DD's head.

6. Once you have applied the glue them grab a section of eyelash with the tweezers and place accordingly on the interior of the socket. Press gently with tweezers to secure. Repeat the dabbing of the glue and the application for the rest of the socket from inner eye corner to outer eye corner. Please take care to place as evenly and symmetrical as possible to ensure a lovely finished product. ^^

7. LET IT DRY. I am so impatient. I did let this project completely dry because it was detailed and labor intensive and I didn't want to repeat the process. Once the initial application is complete then use your small brush to place an extra coating of glue to the roots of the eyelashes again. This step is optional but I wanted to make sure the original sticky backing of the eyelashes was covered so they wouldn't stick to her eyes and become disconnected. Wait for the second layer of glue to dry.

8. You're ready to go! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done and enjoy your girl's new look!

Questions? Comments? Alternate methodology!?!? Please add your own input as I am sure there is not ONE proper method- this one is just mine. ^^

* I use a plastic cement from the hobby store that does not affect the vinyl of the DD but does create a bond strong enough to endure changing eyes. It can be tricky to work with so make sure you're paying really close attention as I have no doubts if you accidentally got this on your doll's face up: it WILL remove it. Please be really careful! I image you can use the glue of your choosing- I just chose one specifically a) clear and b) meant to be used with plastic.

Thanks so much for the guide! I think we might put some eyelashes on Soniko now, though it seems like a scary process!

It's really not so bad- you just need a very steady hand. Like holding your breath to take a picture, I think? Anyhow, I know you can do it and I look forward to seeing the results! ^^

Oh, it only takes a few rounds of freaking out. Give it a try, .

I made up my mind right after I adopted ユ-ピィ that all my musume must have eyelashes. They are just so much more natural-looking with eyelashes. And, they look sweeter too!

You're so totally right about the freaking out. I thought your peeps added the eyelashes for you?! They didn't? Nice work! It was Euphie and Mitsuki's girl (Sumire?) that convinced me to do it. I thought DDs looked extra charming with eyelashes. You totally understand the pain, fear and freaking out. I've committed to keeping Nana as my own daughter and adding the lashes was worth the effort in end~

Thank you everyone for the compliments on the tutorial. It's not a horrible process and worth a go if you want to try a new look! ^^

I bought some eyelashes a few weeks ago. Now, I just have to gather the courage to actually try putting them on.

Oh? And who will be the lucky recipient? It's got to be either Mari or Aoi..... gotta be.

I don't think Aoi would let me, but maybe Sakura or Mari. Those two are more willing to try different things.

Euphie originally came with eyelashes. She's very charming and sweet with her eyelashes. :3

I have only tinkered with Euphie's eyelashes once, so I don't think I deserve your kind compliment. ^.^

I agree with you that applying glue to the rim of the eye sockets can be very tricky. It does take a lot of patience and coordination to get the right amount of glue on the upper section of the sockets. I recommend using Mr. Cotton Swab when applying the glue. With these tiny cotton swabs, you can control the amount of glue that you are using (regular cotton swabs work too, but I find Mr. Cotton Swab to be much more convenient to use due to it's small size). When applying the glue, you could start by dabbing a small amount glue onto the rim (make sure to spread the strokes out to leave some "unglued" space in between the dabs). Then, use a new cotton swab to spread the dabbed glue over the upper portion of the rim (look at #5 of the picture that Nakitaninja posted).

Nakitaninja, your guide is very well written. I LOVE it.

Hey thanks!

I swear being part of the community is what makes having dolls a lot of fun. ^^ It was my pleasure to provide a tutorial. I was surprised at how much personality it gave her? She looks very... luxurious now? I don't know, maybe that sounds odd. Anyhow, I highly suggest it if you have a steady hand.

You're right too, Hal, having Mr.Cotton Swab around would have been helpful! I tried using regular cotton swabs but the fibers tend to get caught in the glue. >_< A toothpick would work really well to spread the glue too! Just some thoughts if you're going to embark on the adventure~
