baldylox Posted August 9, 2012 That's a great little modded girl! I especially love her eyelashes and eye makeup, it's really cool. I find it so nice that people seem to choose the 01 head more than any other for modding. Since I have 3 girls who are 01's, I really have a soft spot for them and it's fun to see other peoples visions for them! Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
SisterKyoya Posted August 10, 2012 I really need an MDD in my life~ Yes, yes you do. They really are a lot of fun and their littleness is so adorable, in my opinion they can pull out the cuteness card in a way that is a lot more difficult with the full-sized DD. I have high hopes that the MDDIII will fix a lot of the issues with the MDD and hopefully make them more common in the DD realm. Jadepixel: Is it all that hard to remove the eye as long as you are careful and have a sharp blade? I've wondered about cleaning up the inside of the eye holes to fix the tiny gaps that I know Tamayuki has but I wasn't too sure if it would be harder than it looks. ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
jadepixel Posted August 10, 2012 Thanks everybody I wasn't sure about 01 head at first, but seeing all the customs and Billy's girls inspired me to give her a try... glad that I did! Removing the mouth opens lots of expression possibilities, I may get another 01 to try something different. And I'm totally enamored with MDD now, the new body is fun to pose (I haven't tried the old one) and has such cute proportions. Hope Volks stocks them again soon, would love to see more MDD girls around. Sister Kyoya- It's pretty easy to open the eye using a small x-acto blade. I used some needle files for cleanup, and that did an excellent job of smoothing the edges out. After that a pass with sandpapers will make the surface smooth enough for painting/blushing. And one more cute photo I took tonight- jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop
SisterKyoya Posted August 10, 2012 I agree that the 01 head is much easier to deal with after the mouth has been modded. We have three 01 heads (all of our girls, happened by accident), modded Rainie's, painted Naiomi's lips then added chalk to darken it, and just got done doing Yuriko's with just blushing. I can say after blushing Tamayuki's 03 lips yesterday that the 01 heads are a beast to deal with when you encounter the lip sculpt. The MDDII bodies are fun to pose too... until it slowly starts to give out. I will be very happy to get Tamayuki a MDDIII when I can so he can get back to being his very helpful self. MDD are so adorable I'm really surprised that there isn't more of them. ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
juu-yuki Posted August 11, 2012 Oh she is so adorable! And your photography is amazing as always~ I would try working with a closed eye head but it looks kind of scary. What is the lowest grit sandpaper that you used? I've tried 600 but it always end up leaving little deep scratches that I could never get rid of. =[ http://juu-yuki.com Dolly Shop: http://www.lizanna.com

jadepixel Posted August 11, 2012 Thank you I would try working with a closed eye head but it looks kind of scary. What is the lowest grit sandpaper that you used? I've tried 600 but it always end up leaving little deep scratches that I could never get rid of. =[ I use 600 sandpaper at the final stage. If there are still deep scratches I go back to the coarser paper and work my way down again, sometimes it takes a few tries. Be sure to clean well between each sanding as loose grit could add new scratches. And if you're not removing much material, there's no need to start with anything rougher than 300. Hope that helps jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

jadepixel Posted August 11, 2012 You'll definitely need to do heavier sanding to remove the mouth, using the coarsest paper. For 01, I started by peeling off most of the extra vinyl using a round x-acto router blade- Peeling creates a smoother surface that's easier to sand- you want to avoid cuts or gouges that would be hard to remove. If you accidentally dig into the surface with a sharp point, you'd have to sand to the same level as the cut in order to remove it. So deep cuts = lots of sanding. After getting as much off as I could with the router, I used the needle files to even out the mouth area and inside the eye. I think most of the coarse clean-up work was taken care of with the files, actually, they're very handy for that! And they don't shed grit like the papers. Then I spent a lot of time with the sandpapers starting with the coarsest. I used the coarsest paper only on the mouth and inner eye edges, then expanded outward as I sanded with finer papers to blend. I use the flexible wet/dry sandpaper packs that are sold for model kits - they work great for small projects like this. And you can tear off small pieces to sand inside the eyes if you need to. But like I mentioned before, you have to be super careful to remove the grit between each sanding pass, or you'll just sand it back in and make scratches on the next pass. That might be WAY more info then you needed, but I think it's a reliable process and not as scary as it may at first seem jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

I have never seen those in my life OoO. Do you hook them up to a machine or something? I am working on a head right now. Never done heavy sanding before, only small parts of the mouth and eyes. I am sanding off a cheek right now and the scratches are so unavoidable for me, when if I wipe away the dust once and awhile. I am using 300 grit and having trouble taking off the vinyl. I just hope I will be able to get all of the scratches out okay and not create new ones. >_<""" After getting as much off as I could with the router, I used the needle files to even out the mouth area and inside the eye. PlasticFantastic Posted August 14, 2012 It's interesting to read what you did in detail to mod the face. I love 01 heads on MDD bodies - and with sanding it leaves you with a LOT of possibilities for expression. She turned out SO cute, I'm really impressed with your work! You can get flat ones or round ones, good for getting into small nooks and cranny's that normal sandpaper has trouble reaching They are handy to have around and most all hardware stores carry them Follow me on Twitter https://twitter.com/WhiteRabbit887 Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/whiterabbitdolls?igsh=czQyZzRweG9hZDM2
jadepixel Posted August 15, 2012 Oh yeah, I forgot to post the photo of my tools- You can see on the far left a needle file set, from a hobby shop. They're great for nooks and crannies and save a lot of time. Next to them with the fat black handle is an x-acto woodworking tool. The router blades are for that handle. Don't worry if you didn't know them, I had to look up the name too- I just thought they looked useful for modding ^_^; Then there is the regular x-acto blade (to cut out the eyes) and the hobby sanding films. And a mask of course, don't sand without it! jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

aviaremake12 Posted March 22, 2013 That girl is so kyawaii~! BTW, here's a question.. Is face modding difficult??I've been 'stalking' some post before and seeing you guys doing face modding seems to need lots of effort (and concentration)..
jadepixel Posted March 23, 2013 Thanks! Modding can be intimidating at first, especially if you haven't used the tools before. I got a cheap obitsu head to practice on before modding a DD head. It takes patience, a steady hand, and a clear objective from the start, but not too hard besides that jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

I have noticed a lot of people choose this head to mod over any other.... so I'm curious. I'm not sure if the 01 is the *best* for modding but it sure seems to be the most popular for it if you look at heads for sale on Yahoo Japan. I see TONS of them on there and most of them seem to be setup for the MDD bodies with their look and style. But there's lots of them set for older or more mature looks too. Since writing the above quote, I've actually gone from 3 01 head girls to SEVEN. So I'm totally hooked on them personally. I love how versatile they can be and also with how pretty they are no matter how you style them. I think their ability to look so different and still remain beautiful is the main reason so many people use them for mods. It's an excellent mold and I'm happy to have so many in my DD family. Billy Oh wow. I agree! That's why I want my first MDD to have a modded head. A cute little open smile would be adorable in my eyes! They are very versatile and I feel like they have more personality than most smiles or tsundere frowns on the market (is that what your girls have? A tsundere smile?
