Yuriko's Faceup Glamour Shots

I have been looking at her for three days and I still can't believe that I did her faceup. For a long time I was stressing out that I didn't know how to do a DD style faceup, and had never painted a doll's face before we got our DD. Naiomi, Rainie, and Tamayuki had all been highly refined in my mind on how I wanted them to be, but Yuriko I hadn't considered in-depth. Raven said that he wanted to keep her simple and from everything he said she almost seemed dowdy, bordering on frumpy but I knew that wasn't really her at all. Sure she's very sweet, but she's a glamour girl who loves to hog the camera. I talked to Raven throughout the process and he pretty much let me do what I thought might be right for her. I'm glad that he had the confidence in me because in the beginning I surely didn't have any. I didn't want to do a bunch of work and screw it up with a single line and have to remove everything. I have attempted for months to analyze other DD faceups to figure out how they were done, but they never quite made any sense to me. Yuriko's look is the product of me actually trusting myself (and my ability to figure things out) and doing what felt right.

 

The blushing was so fun to do I didn't want to stop. It may not look like it but her whole entire head is blushed/shaded, even her ears! The top of her neck is blushed just a little too so her head didn't look like it was on the wrong body. In the second photo you can see the difference in her blushed face and her untouched WS hand. I am contemplating blushing her hands and feet just a little (like her neck) before eventually paint her fingernails and toenails. I may eventually get another white skin DD and blush the whole body because it really is that fun for me.

 

One of the unexpected things through this is I finally had a chance to bond with her. After 6 months I was afraid it was never going to happen. With my own DD this hasn't been a problem (even with two of them still needing their own bodies!), but since Yuriko is Raven's she didn't really feel like 'my' daughter. I can't say that I didn't know her personality because I had her pegged pretty well, but when Raven started to say what he wanted for her faceup, she was very quietly disagreeing. "Mama, I know that Daddy wants me to be cute, but I don't want what he thinks he wants. I want to be much prettier than that but still cute too." I can still say that I didn't expect the freckles at all but it wouldn't be a shock if Yuriko had been rooting for them the whole time. I really love how she turned out and Raven has said that she is just what she should be. One of the things I love about her face is that she can do glam stuff, but she can also fit the roll of the bombshell in the middle of country hick town. I grew up in one of those so I know the stereotype!

 

I really tried to photograph her to show off the shading well, but the thing the camera didn't quite catch is how her skin looks like some porcelain figurines I've seen before. There is a translucency from the WS that the NS doesn't have and yet the blushing makes it so she can be easily photographed. Raven has heard me rant plenty about that issue with the WS before.

Yay! She's finally complete! And she looks wonderful too! Those big swooping eyelashes and line of freckles are just so nicely done. And she's blushed well too, not overstated at all.

I have been incredibly pleased with how she's turned out! Way cuter than I could have imagined. Now, all she needs to be completely finished is fore her wig to arrive, sometime in the next week or two, hopefully. I'm glad I let SK have free rein on the faceup. Also, why aren't there more gals with freckles? I've only seen a couple others, but they are so incredibly adorable!

 

Anyways, I know I've told you a few times, but I wanted to make it public... Thank you SO much, Sister Kyoya, you did a fantastic job!!!!!

I had to ask Raven if he wanted Yuriko to have freckles because I kept remembering (at least) one of your girls having them and they were too cute!

I think the freckles really made her finely look like herself. Without them she might still be a tiny bit plain despite the lashes. I really love how fine details like this make such a big impact.

Half the time I look at her I want to crack up because to me at least she has Manami eyebrows, up just enough to make her look like she's trying to sneak a peak at anything, and yet still really expressive. I didn't do it on purpose.

 

When I was getting ready to do the freckles she looked like a plastic wrap ninja who couldn't figure out how to get her mask on. It was the only way I could think of to get the freckles on without covering her whole face because the blushing was done by that point. After I took the plastic off it freaked me out because they were in a distinctive triangular shape and looked almost stamped on. Luckily the matte spray from Volks can tolerate a bit of scrubbing with a q-tip otherwise I would have had to start over I think. I didn't tell Raven at the time but I thought I had screwed up her face until I started to scrub some of the extra paint splatters off and put more blush over them.

 

As for the blushing in the pics, I had to upload them three times to adjust the colors so it would show more correctly, but even these versions loose a percentage of the subtleness of how it actually looks. (Flickr slightly screws up my photo colors... ) The shading on Tamayuki's face was done in the same way but in the photos so far his nose and lips turn out too dark and his cheeks look washed out. When I'm actually looking at him I have been taken aback a few times because of how real he looks, but still a little cartoony. Took me two tries for him to be perfect, but he's perfect! Only downside now is I'm thinking about redoing Naiomi's and adding the shading because it makes taking pictures so much easier than the blank WS. And Rainie still needs to be fixed for the third time, but at least I know how to do it correctly!

Even though I knew you didn't really know what you wanted, I was still concerned that you wouldn't like her more Glam look. Every reference picture you sent to me pretty much had nothing in common except for maybe the sculpt. Yuriko threatened a few times to pout and throw a tantrum if she didn't get the pretty face she wanted. I'm so glad that everyone is very happy with the end result.

My first faceup? No, but I figured it out way faster than even I expected to. Here is my faceup progression: I did Dolly's first (later had to remove because it was so bad and it had issues), then there was Gothic Rainie, followed closely by Clown Rainie, then Naiomi's, the first attempt at Tamayuki's but the eyebrows and mouth didn't come out right but I did do the blushing, attacked one of the EB Mini heads that I'm turning into a werewolf, then did Yuriko's (and I'm still shocked that there's nothing major to fix with hers!), fixed Tama-can's again and did Dolly's. Rainie is still waiting for her eyelashes to get fixed but I'm still weighing the pros and cons of just completely redoing hers and Naiomi's.

Oh my gosh, that will have to be the next wig Raven gets for her because it would be perfect! Maybe it would be easier to find a short red wig rather than a long one? I can't believe how hard it has been to find a DD sized red wig. Do people just not like red hair?

Raven requested the eyeshadow and I knew it would work with the blushing. Now I just need to get a hold of some shiny gloss for her lips.

I would like to see her with this look too. She's very cute especially with those freckles. I'm sure she'll pull the retro glam look with panache. That and, for some reason, an image with her wearing something in either a white or patterned top, shorts, and a hat pops up but all with a photo shoot glam twist. I look forward to seeing more pictures! Yay! Congrats on doing such a fabulous face-up.

 

PS. I'm also loving Tamayuki's eyebrows.

01s are easily my absolute favorite. They have so much potential and personality right out of the box. Also, they are the closest to my favorite anime character types. When I was trying to decide on what head to order for Yuriko in the first place, it was the only one that really spoke to me. None of the others really caught my attention at all, but with the 01, it was practically love at first sight. I think SK caught that too, since every time I started to hesitate she would quickly point out just how perfect she is.

And like you Raven, the 01 girls are my faves. I have 3 of them in the family so I guess that means something. They do have some spunk and spirit right away and after they get their faces they just jump out at you with those personalities.

 

Not to feed my own ego here but I do see a slight hint of Manami style in Yuriko... she has the same glint of playfulness and sexiness in her eyes that Manami does. And I think that's awesome.

That's not 100% unintentional. I picked the head and eyes quite a while before I ever noticed Manami, but I know for certain that she was definitely a large part of the inspiration behind parts of Yuriko's faceup. The eyebrows, in particular, were heavily inspired by Manami, and I believe a lot of the overall tone of playful flirtatiosness as well. Certainly, a lot of her personality was there already, but seeing Manami, kind of made it feel more ok, if that makes any sense? Basically, I think she was a bit more shy until seeing Manami helped her come out of her shell. Also, there's the fact that she's been completely fangirling over Sprout...

 

Now, if only DHL would only be a bit less afraid of using the throttle, so her wig would just get here, and somebody could turn down the thermostat on the Sun a bit, we could get down to business of getting some more pictures done.

Ahh, that's awesome! I definitely saw some of Manami in the eyes.... And hearing about Yuriko "coming out of her shell" due to Manami is really wonderful. To think she and I had something to do with another persons girl developing is really flattering. I'm glad you enjoy her so much that you'd use parts of her persona in your girl. I find that extremely cool.

I'm really happy that people have latched onto Sprout like they have. My main fear was that I'd change her from what she used to be but now that we connect better, she's growing at an alarming rate and becoming her own girl that has big ties to her past self but is heading in other directions that actually fit her personality.
