mitsuki Posted October 31, 2012 That's right, Traveller. You should stick to going to Japan to look for DDs. Too bad you are missing the upcoming Dolpa. Although poor PlasticFantastic didn't win at the lottery when she went to a Dolpa in person, so I am not sure that the chances are any better to physically go to a Dolpa. I believe the Dolpa After Events are not limited to the web stores though, and happen at the physical stores too. If that's the case, getting things in person there may not be so bad depending on what location you go to. Are you ready to rock? ^_^
PlasticFantastic Posted November 1, 2012 That's right, Traveller. You should stick to going to Japan to look for DDs. Too bad you are missing the upcoming Dolpa. Although poor PlasticFantastic didn't win at the lottery when she went to a Dolpa in person, so I am not sure that the chances are any better to physically go to a Dolpa. Because the Dolpa also has a 'luck of the draw' approach the odds really aren't that much better (it feels) but because each magazine gives you a chance you can throw your odds - but it costs a lot of money to buy many guidebooks!!!! This thread reminded me of some hilarious questions and ultra rude comments we've had. During the spring while a group of us (Archangeli, Di-Chan, NKei) were doing sakura shoots with the trees and our DD's: random man: "What kind of photography is this?" Sam: "Uhhhh, hobby photography?" random man:"Hobby Photography eh? VERY INTERESTING" Last day of Anime North this year heading back to our car, a couple of our DD's were out so we were carrying them: random girl walks over to us directly: "You know, your dolls are really f**king creepy." me, giving her a dirty look of death: "Thanks...." and we walk around her and move on. During one of our picnics on Toronto Island Random man on bicycle pauses and looks "Where's your spaceship?" Archangeli and others give him dirty look of death, me having not heard him clearly turn around and ask "Excuse me? Are you lost?" his response "Never mind." and he bikes away~ We get a lot of questions like "Where do you buy them?" "Did you make these yourself?" "So you all have dolls?" and stuff like that. We also get lots of "They're so cute!" and "Can we take pictures please?" Please visit my YouTube channel for helpful DD tips, tutorials, and reviews! katnaper Posted November 19, 2012 A co-worker of mine who is really afraid of dolls has half jokingly called me "creepy doll lady" . LOL. I told her I wasn't going to miss her when she leaves to go to a different department. I might even do a "bring your doll to work on your co-worker's last night shift and scare the living daylights out of her" thing if I was motivated enough to do it. But I won't. I've long ago realised I wasn't going to change her opinion of the dolls no matter what I do. And that's okay. I'm blessed enough to have a husband who indulges my DD habit and actually likes my girls and to be a part of this lovely community, that I don't really mind what other people say. Mind you my Mom and Dad have never seen the girls in person so I don't know how they will react especially if they ever find out how much they actually cost. We have our own BLOG. Please visit us at the House of Nyan by clicking this link or our sig above. See you there. vegablack Posted November 19, 2012 Hahah. I had a co-worker who was afraid of them too, but I was nice enough to bring them in on days when she wasn't working or to hide them when she came around. She wasn't mean about it or anything and my "creepy dolls" ended up being sort of a joke between the two of us with me jokingly telling her I'd bring them in and make them stare at her all day and stuff like that. It was a lot of fun. My parents think me collecting dolls is really childish, but I'm sure neither of them would say anything if they were porcelain dolls though... They also think anime is childish too so that might be part of it. I've surprisingly not really gotten any bad comments on my dolls really. I've had tons of people ask the usual standard questions like what they are and where they're from. I've also had so many people get really excited when they see them and start talking to me. These people tend to get even more excited when I offer to let them hold them for a minute. I've also had a lot of people ask for pictures. The good comments and genuinely curious questions from people is a big part of why I'm in the hobby. I'm normally an extremely shy person who has a lot of difficulty talking to people I don't know, but when someone wants to talk to me about the dolls I'm a lot more outgoing and usually end up talking to them for a good amount of time about it. I feel like the dolls really help me come out of my shell, weird as that may be. djgamer Posted November 20, 2012 I received my first girl in the mail just a week ago. I had her shipped to my Grandmother's house as I live in the country and sometimes have a hard time getting large packages in the mail. I received a phone call from her telling me a package came for me. I was excited and rushed to her house before work. She knew what I was getting as I had shown her pics from the person who had done the face up. When I cut open the box and put her all together, my Grandmother she was "just darling". After a few attempts of standing her up for the first time and almost watching her faceplant (she is a DDdy btw) my grandmother commented it was because she was "too front heavy". She then doted on me to take good care of her and be careful about the cats and dogs we had at the house. I think she was more concerned about my doll's welfare then I was. lol She did give me a sideways stare when I told her the approximate value of it all and said, "Well, it's your money..." yama Posted November 21, 2012 I haven't had many people see my dolls (or figures) but two common comments have been, "so what are they for?", and, "and how much did this cost?". I'm honestly not sure how to answer the first question and I usually ignore the last one because it's all too much money too be understood by someone with a common sense. Hi! My name is yama. SisterKyoya Posted November 22, 2012 I haven't had many people see my dolls (or figures) but two common comments have been, "so what are they for?", and, "and how much did this cost?". I'm honestly not sure how to answer the first question and I usually ignore the last one because it's all too much money too be understood by someone with a common sense. Easy answers as to a DD's purpose are "Because they make me happy", "to help with my photography", "Because they use less shampoo than a dog..." I really don't know why people complain so much about the cost. It's not like you are buying illegal drugs with the money. People's reasoning on things like this seem really wacky to me. Why does the cost matter if you aren't hurting yourself or anyone else? Personally I think carrying a camera, any camera, when taking your girls out really helps a lot. Not only can you use to hide behind, it's a visual cue to others that you are doing something Important and they don't see you as quite so crazy. This also deflects some people from asking stupid questions because they don't want to interrupt your important task, even if you are on a campus with students roaming everywhere. Best tip of all that I personally use whenever we take our kids out: I swear like a raving mad sailor in my head at anyone I feel threatened by, even if they are 50 feet away and just looking. Most people remember the manners that we were supposed to be taught as kids and generally keep their thoughts to themselves. It still cracks me up when we were taking Tamayuki and Yuriko's Field Trip photo story pics on the campus and some guy yelled from about 40 feet away "Photography and modeling both at the same time? Right on!" Even sometimes when the negative comments come up, karma bites the meanie in the rear. During the same outing when Raven was taking some pics of Yuriko on a metal praying mantis statue, some guy and a girl walked past. Once he assumed he was out of Raven's earshot I heard him whisper "Creepy" to his friend. Right after that he looked up and saw me standing there, with Tamayuki in my arms, staring straight at him. It was so awesome to see him instantly be hit with realizing how big of an ***hole he was being. He didn't say anything else but he nearly slunk past me. Hmm, maybe that's another tip, Two people carrying around and photographing DD could be perceived to be more normal than just an individual. So... its better to be crazy with a friend? ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
Ravendruid Posted November 22, 2012 I very much have to agree on the carrying a camera idea. Sure, a SLR looks professional and will make you look serious, but even a $20 point-and-shoot makes you look like you're busy and doing something besides just carrying around a doll. Besides, how could you NOT want to be able to take pictures of your girl(s) any time you are out. Also, strength in numbers makes a huge difference. Especially if you have a mixed group of male/female. Guys there to look intimidating and girls there to look like they are the ones playing with dolls. (Yes that's kind of sexist, but sadly that's how the world seems to see it, obviously I don't have a problem with boys and dolls, nor do I think that some girls can't look intimidating when they need to, but as a generalization it holds.) Obviously, the most effective option is to simply not care what anybody else thinks, but I am very well aware that for many, that simply isn't an option at all. Other tips: If you're a male, keeping your girl at least somewhat modestly dressed can keep some of the "pervert" comments at bay, while having her show a bit more skin can reduce questions about your orientation, so dress her depending on your location/comfort level. IF you're photographing, don't get so caught up in getting the right shot that you cease to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you are in an isolated area. The biggest thing is just looking like you belong/are serious. Have the attitude that whatever you are doing is perfectly legit and anybody that thinks it's wierd is the one with the problem and most of the time you'll be left alone. Most of the people who have approached me were simply genuinely curious. You never know when one of those curious questions might just lead somone new into the hobby. Innocentsake Posted November 23, 2012 I really enjoy taking my girls out for meets/cons/and whatnot. Thankfully I haven't had any negative comments when I've taken them out. It makes me smile when I see people lingering around trying to get a look at them and sneaking pictures if they are too shy to come up to me. When I've taken them out for DD meets: "They are so cute!" "Hurry hurry, those people are taking pictures of these dolls!" "You're really bringing those dolls to life aren't you?" "Those dolls aren't for kids, those girls put Barbie to shame!" <----Love this comment At Anime Conventions: General questions of who makes them/how to get one More "How cute!" comments "Ah!!! Can I hold her?!" At BJD Meets: (Not Positive/Negative, more funny really) "Their busts scare me." and "That girl sure is busty! She's a Dollfie Dream right? When I think of big busts I think of Dollfie Dreams, that's what Volks is known for." <--- I think these are funny because I've only been to 2 BJD meets with my DDs and both times someone made mention of their chests! It's just funny because if you like them so much, but don't like the large or dynamite bust all you have to do is get a small or medium bust instead ^^;;; Plus when did Volks become known for big busts? Lol~ Show & Tell for Japanese 2 Class: I always get nervous talking in front of people, but I was actually excited to bring Momoko to class and show her off. She was by far the biggest and most expensive item brought for show & tell haha. But the class was really interested in her. The first comment was "Whoa that's a big doll!" and they started asking questions and even my professor asked me how much the particular doll I brought to class cost me. After we were done we took break and I took her out of the carrying case to play with her during break. The only time I can say I played with my DD in class The girls sitting next to me were asking if she had more clothes and how to change her eyes and it was just a really good day. Oh & Billy I totally told the story about you getting kicked out of the Pachinko Parlor in Japan because one of the guys was sharing all the flyers he had gotten on his trip there and one of them was for a Pachinko Parlor. The class got a kick out of the story My Mom: I don't live with my parents, but they live like 2 blocks away from me. And when I go over to visit I've shown my mom some pictures of Momoko and she thought she was cute. Though she hasn't seen one in person yet, I should do that one day hehe~ So all in all I haven't had to deal with negativity, but even if someone said something I didn't like I would just shrug my shoulders and walk away. My DDs make me happy and that's all that matters

jadepixel Posted November 23, 2012 Oh man, the heated toilet seats freaked me out a bit! I sat down and was not expecting that, since it's nearly body temp it feels like you just sat on somebody's lap ^_^;;; Also, I stayed at a ryokan and the manager apologized for the room having a 'primitive' toilet. I peeked in there, half expecting some scary squat... nope, it looked like a western toilet, even had the heated seat. Just no bidet, that's 'primitive' nowadays I suppose Before I totally derail the thread- When I first shared photos of my dolls, my FB friends teased me that they were 'scary' or that they were my substitute children... uh, ok. I didn't post any more there for a while. But lately I started sharing my custom faceups and sewing projects, and folks seem to 'get' that a little better. It does seem easier to explain as, "Oh, I sewed this cute outfit and I'm just taking some photos of it." jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

The playing sounds/music and bidet and all of those other functions can be kinda weird. I didn't know the toilets in Japan had so many functions like that! And I totally wasn't knocking them lol, my Japanese Professor went on for like 10 minutes about how great the toilets in Japan are and how she actually brought one back with her to the states! The heating function I'm sure is great for the winter and the playing music would be soothing. Though the bidet part... hmm well you only live once right? Hehe~ Also, I stayed at a ryokan and the manager apologized for the room having a 'primitive' toilet. I think that's hilarious that the toilet with no bidet was considered primitive I'm sure it definitely helps people understand DDs better when they see the creative things you come up with for them. Friends who come over do see my girls in their corner, but most of the time they don't say anything about it and if they do they just say like "That's cool" and continue the conversation to something else. Which is fine with me. I'd rather people not say anything at all than be rude, especially if they are my friends. Though one of my friends did mention that she felt like they were staring at her and I was just like "Don't look at them" Problem solved

If that's primitive, what does the manager think of the Japanese style toilets (which are still actually fairly common in public bathrooms in Japan)? For those who don't know, Japanese style "toilets" are basically like a men's urinal inside a stall, but put on the floor instead of the wall. You just kinda squat over 'em and go. I don't particularly like them, but when you gotta go and that's all that's available... Though one of my friends did mention that she felt like they were staring at her and I was just like "Don't look at them" Problem solved You know, I still don't get that feeling some people get. Not really sure how dolls can be "staring" but you don't really hear people talk about that for figures or other things. Are you ready to rock? ^_^

That friend has never said anything about all the figures around my apartment. When it was just Momoko she never said anything, but now that there are two DDs that must increase her "Dolls are staring at me" senses When her & her husband came over he stopped and stared at my DD area but said nothing, which is lucky for him. Her husband can be overly open about what he thinks about things he doesn't like and I would've just ripped him a new one had he said anything bad
baldylox Posted November 23, 2012 Not to derail this any further but since you asked... I stayed with a buddy in Osaka and he had one of those super fancy toilets. It had all the functions you could think of.... heated seat, bidet, rear wash, automatic light with motion sensor, music, air freshener output, motorized lid, the works! He had to show me on the control panel ( Yes it had its own control panel mounted to the wall ) how to work it since it had all kanji on it for instructions. One night about 3am, I had to go. The toilet itself was basically in a closet, the room it was in was VERY narrow so with my wide shoulders I barely fit. So I walk in and the little courtesy light comes on for me. Ah nice, how cool. I turn around and push the button to lift one lid so I can sit down. Mind you, it's 3am, I'm super groggy and not in total control of my body yet. So as soon as I turn around and drop my shorts, my right elbow hits the control panel. As I hit the seat, the rear wash greets me with a steady stream of water that I was NOT expecting. I clenched up immediately and started flailing my arms around in an effort to press the button to shut it off. The music came on, the bidet came on and it smelled really nice in there. But for about 5 seconds ( which felt like an hour ) I was in total terror mode and was frantic to get out of there! I finally managed to stand up just in time to see the small rear wash arm retracting slowly into the back of the bowl area. I stood there gasping for breath as the music shut off and then the lid closed on its own. About 10 seconds later, the light turned off and I was in the dark, feeling completely confused and violated. Needless to say I didn't have to go to the bathroom anymore. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Anna-neko Posted November 24, 2012 Billy, that is the most hilarious story evah!! I mean... can totally see how at the time its insane especially with your pants down, but .. from this side of the monitor it is comedy gold Anyways, back on topic - my mom's reactions to Saber are some of the cutest comments. Whenever she comes into my room and Saber is wearing new clothes or has been posed differently or in new space, mom has to go take a closer look. When Saber was a maid - mom completely spazzed at her even having a neat lil mop. When the new chair came in, mom was excited the girl finally had a proper place to sit. When the LP nendos came in & had only one place to put them, mom was all upset teh poor girl has been 'evicted' from her case & now must get dusty on my desk again now that Saber is in a new plaid outfit, mom is joking that at this rate we'll need to get her a wardrobe soon, as she's owning more dresses than I do.
