My awesome life

So, I always knew that there was a certain degree of risk being a security officer, however, last week I found out just how dangerous it can be. Especially since we aren't allowed to carry and weapons. The best I have is a bright flashlight.

I work the overnight shift at a large insurance agency with a large campus that contains several building and shopping mall next door, as well as a large building for the grounds crew. My usual partner for the night was on vacation and I was working with a semi-new officer. While walking the required tour around 4:40am, I noticed the padlock to the grounds gate was missing and the gate was semi-open. I radioed to my partner in the office, thinking he might have forgotten to lock the gate late time he came around. About this time, a small white truck appears from behind the building. Upon seeing me, the truck quickly darts back behind the building. I asked my partner if he knew about any grounds people working late. This is when things got fun.

The truck comes back around the building again and makes a wide turn straight at the gate, which I was standing in front of, and I hear the engine rev up. There actually was a split second in my head when I suddenly thought, "Huh, he's gonna ram the gate." I dove to my left, narrowly missing getting hit by the gate and the truck as it plowed through. That's when the object they tried to steal bounced out of the bed of the truck. A large front mounted snow plow. It hit the ground and skidded for about 20ft before it stopped, sparks flying everywhere. I radioed my partner to call 911 and get police over here as the truck sped off down the road.

Most exciting night of my life.

Wow! I am glad you weren't hurt. It sounds like something right out of a movie. Thank goodness you had the presence of mind to move so quickly. My uncle was caught trying to steal a car load of weed-whackers so I guess lawn and landscape minded criminals really are out there. Snow plows come in a lot more handy up here than in Texas where my uncle is.

Whoa that is a crazy story! Even knowing the risk of your job, having never had something like this happen before it must've caught you off guard :o Really good to hear that not only were you unharmed, but the item they were stealing fell out of their truck as well. You'll have to let us know if the police ever caught up with that truck or if they disappeared out of sight. Either way you definitely had one heck of a night!

They also dropped a hard hat out of the back of the truck. The officer took it for DNA. Our grounds people don't have hard hats, so it must have been theirs. Still no word, there is a vehicular assault charge on them.

Heh, those were my words exactly. It was almost like a dream. My boss was flipping out when we called her. She kept asking me, "Why aren't you freaking out?" I told her, "I was a prison guard for 4 years, nothing shocks me anymore."
