Disney owns ALL the things

Recommended Posts

Anna-neko

so while Twitter is melting with "Disney just bought Lucasfilm" posts... I came to realize that someone at Disney is basically that kid in preschool who had to own hoards ALL the stuff [EDIT: owns bazillion awesome shows, can't be bothered to do DVD releases for much of their library]

.. they got Marvel, ABC, Pixar and Muppets. StarWars has been licensed for park-use for ages, but now they own it outright..... Altho all the posts are screaming "StarWars" and nobody mentions other Lucas properties which worries me much more.

Especially since now Disney can totally cram some Jedi & Dr Jones into the next Kingdom Hearts game (which technically is made worse by Tron & Pirates in those games, 'cause they didn't even bother to redesign anything to match Sora-tachi cartoony look... Ok, KH is a rant for another day)

PS: Leia the Disney Princess. Get those pink 'earmuff' hair-ribbons ready!

____

On bright side, rule of "ruined by sequel" can't apply for once! George himself made extra-sure to do that one. Repeatedly

Everyone and their dog uses ILM!! So with that AND Pixar under their belt...

ABC has been under their belt for long, and ..ehh... that network only got ONE good show to watch. Which is a rip on Fables anyway 'cause they never could agree on the licensing with them

History Channel ceased to be "history" years ago. Now its "I'm not saying its aliens... but its aliens" network. Sorry (also its only half-Disney owned. A&E owns other half) *sigh* then again, all the good channels that used to be about history and learning have become bull$#%^ reality shows

I have great confidence in Disney marketing and merch, but not their shows or movies. Is that weird?

Ok, I have to say, I really don't see how this is a bad thing.

Honestly, once I got over my initial "OMG My childhood is ruined 4EVAR!!11!" reaction, I realized that they really can't do much worse than Lucas has recently. Also, They have, overall, treated the Marvel license rather well. Sure, this could turn out pretty badly, but there is also the potential for it to be a pretty good thing. My prediction is a few great movies and spin-offs, along with a truckload of shovel-worthy straight to DVD garbage. Also, if this new movie they are currently talking about turns into a decently done adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy, then it will have been entirely worth it IMO.

In regards to Indiana Jones, after Crystal Skull, I don't think Disney could do anything BUT improve it.

I just wish somebody would pick up LucasArts and resurrect some of their old games. I'm looking at you, Grim Fandango, Afterlife, and X-Wing. Also, a proper third Knights of the Old Republic game that's NOT an MMO.

Although Indiana Jones is the one Lucasfilm property they don't have the rights to because of Paramount.

I guess whats bothering me most is that Disney is becoming this:

image.php?album_id=117&image_id=626

PS: Paramount owns Indy? Its a Lucasfilm/Spielberg property, Paramount is just a distributor, aren't they?

Same way they had distribution rights to couple of the Marvel movies, while Disney/Marvel are the real IP owners

I'm a huge SW fan and pretty much worship the original trilogy. To me, the prequals don't exist... fekkin Jar Jar.

Anyways, I think that if they want to be able to fully use the SW name, they HAVE to take it away from Lucas. He is one of the most adamant people I know about totally ignoring fans and their wants. He tinkers with his stuff way too much all in the name of "artistic vision". BAH. Let someone who is a fan of the SW franchise run the gig and do something GOOD with it.

For instance, let Genndey Tartakovsky run it all. He did the most excellent Clone Wars cartoon shorts for Lucas and they were beyond great. Also, he knows how to do drama and comedy since he's run Samurai Jack and Dexters Lab on Cartoon Network. So let him run things and give us what we want... a GOOD SW movie!

As for all the other stuff, I agree that you can't do worse than Indy 4. It can only get better!

PS. 4.05 BILLION? Seriously? Is there even a real number that big?

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Billy, but while Lucas is all about "his artistic integrity" [not gonna lie, w/out it Original Trilogy wouldn't exist], Disney is all about making movies by committee while ignoring the actual writers/animators!

Rename a princess movie with a random adjective as to not alienate boys? Sure!

Parade the studio's first female director to all the press releases and then fire her & replace with a macho-man to finish a mother/daughter story? Why not!

Make the guy working on a fun lil dog movie storm off to Dreamworks, give project to someone else and make a 'meh' 3D thing. Of course.

Hold a SciFi novel classic in production hell for a few years, reshoot half of it last minute and then be surprised it tanks and claim it just... [long rant removed for time]

....yeah........ Disney can screw up SW worse than Lucas. Especially anything EU, as it can get swept away easily from DC as part of their lil "copyright crackdown" terrorism

By golly, if they pull this off I will love them forever. Well, okay, maybe not forever but long enough or at least till they come up with some other not so worthy of even thinking about movie. But, yeah, Thrawn trilogy done right would be... mind boggling. In a good way.

Oh man, I hope they listen to you. His Clone wars cartoons were awesome. If he ever does the Thrawn trilogy... wow. I can just imagine how good its gonna be.

If I recall ILM, and skywalker sound were their own companies, not under lucasfilm ownership, but more Lucas himself, this deal was just for Lucasfilm and its intellectual properties, so lets say hello to new Starwars and Dr Joneses.. with mouse ears.

EDIT:

Knowing the movies by comittee angle chise mentioned, I still personally dont know is this such a bad thing actually, after reading the story on the beebs site, also learned that disney had baught marvel, and thus has given us the iron man movies, but that said those work basicly with Robert Downey Jr.

And pirates worked.. atleast the first one, so will have to see.

That's an. . . interesting purchase, Disney.

I'm not a huge SW fan, so that does't bother me, but it does kind of feel like Disney's legal and acquisition departments are working far faster than the creative ones. I kind of want to tell them to back off for a bit and figure out what to do with what they've already got before going all grabby for more stuff--especially as 90% of US media is owned by just SIX companies, one of which is Disney. :/ I mean, yeah, Disney's got some great stuff sure, but it does get pretty unnerving when you think of it that way. (For comparison, in the early 80's it took 50 companies to reach that 90% mark. That's a pretty fast shift.)

Basically, this individual acquisition doesn't necessarily bother me too much, but the bigger picture it's a piece of does not make me a happy camper.

In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

You know, now that I think about it, this isn't exactly terrible. I mean, George Lucas messes his own movie franchises up on his own. Maybe with Disney around to tell him that, no, that thing is a stupid idea, maybe Star Wars and Indiana Jones will get better. Especially Indiana Jones. Because, really, I think it's utterly impossible to make a worse movie than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

Considering how much money they make with Star Wars toys, live shows and rides already it's not that surprising.

On the 6 company issue though; I'd rather have Disney running large parts than Rupert Murdoch.

As a giant, mega, Indiana Jones fan girl, I wish I could disagree with you. I'm pretending that Crystal Skull didn't happen. It was more like fanfiction than a sequel.

The story I read said "Lucasfilm LTD" which means any and all of its operating businesses. ILM, Skywalker, LucasArts - they are all Lucasfilm subsidiaries, therefor Disney has a claim

thing is, its the StarWars sequel they wanna make that bugs me more than anything. Iron Man the 1st, and Pirates the 1st were fun movies! IronMan2 was a clusterf*ck (doubly painful in IMAX), 3 Pirates follow-ups were sleep-inducing.... so... could Disney maybe not make a direct sequel, but maybe something more like KoToR which takes place centuries before, or you know, just use one of the bazillion SW EU expansions and make something original?

PS: Indy skulls movie? Spielberg is just as much to blame here. The man really wanted to make Shia LaBeouf a star or something <_<; And was running out of flicks to cram "aliens did it" as the ending too

At least nobody "special edition"ed the original trilogy set!

..., but it does kind of feel like Disney's legal and acquisition departments are working far faster than the creative ones.

I hear ya!! Its just like Apple & Google blew more money on patents legal battles than research this year too. Everyone so busy buyin out everyone else and IPs, they can't be bothered to have some creative stuff happening

All I want to know is:

Will Star Wars VII get to be directed by Joss Whedon?

Disney had nothing to do with the Iron Man movies. And they also are leaving the Marvel Studios people with direct control of the movies as far as I understand.

yeah sorry ^^;; on a different board everyone was waving Marvel movies as proof that Disney can do it 'right' (being Marvel owners and all), so it kinda got snuck into my post

All Disney does is own Marvel Studios, and allow Paramount to distribute the flicks

but hey, promising to release a new SW movie every 2 years and moving away from EU can't possibly be bad right? 'cause episode VIII can be "the retirement castle" and then episode X will be the thinly veiled reboot masquerading as a sequel with more "slick martial arts" choreographed fight scenes

EDIT: ok, after cooling down of sorts, the only OMFG THIS IS BAD feel left is one I've been saddled with couple years now

The feel that says: Disney can no longer be bothered with creating new stuff and instead just gobbles up anything creative out there.
