Milk Posted May 20, 2011 Hey! I'm not sure if this should go in this category or in General Discussion... Well, here goes nothing. Okay, I want to acquire a stand for my DD since I imagine that taking pictures would be easier than holding her with my legs at times... I saw that there are 3 different styles of stands. One which holds the waist, tight or a saddle one. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) My questions now are: Are there any grave differences concerning the stand style? Do certain have some strength/weaknesses others don't have? Which one would be the best for posing? Which stands do you have at home (brand/style) and why? Any particular ones you'd recommend to others? home ‣ Victoria Beatrice {DD Beatrice} ▪ DD 2B ▪ DDB 9S ▪ Lavi {TF Murphy} ▪ Mocha {TF Fluffy} ▪ Anastasia {TF Ashley} ▪ TakoTako {TF Piercy} waiting for ‣ DDS Alisaie ▪ DDSB Alphinaud ▪ TinyFox Poison
Galvatim Posted May 20, 2011 I've got a few of Volks' stands. I really like my metal base C-type saddle stand. Nice and weighty, but still compact. It comes apart easily, and fits into the Volks carrier bag well. The downside to saddle stands, more so than other types, is that they work best with skirts and dresses. The saddle part is really noticeable if your girl is wearing pants. I haven't been using my wood base stands too much lately. They are nice enough, they just take up too much room on my desk. Of course, you can mod a wood base stand into a 'tripod stand', which can mount on a camera tripod, very easily. I mainly use a stand if I'm going to have one of my girls standing long term, on an uneven surface, or anywhere falling would be a risk. Dollfies actually have really good balance, they can stand on a flat surface quite easily. And for MDDs, a stand is a must!
Halcyon Posted May 20, 2011 I suggest you get a saddle stand for Beatrice. Her standard set of clothes is a full dress, so I think a saddle stand would be a good fit for her. Check Galvatim's post for more information on the saddle stand. Waist stands are good too, but these kind of stands are more suited for DDs that have short hair and/or --> are wearing pants. I have two saddle stands (one is tripod modded) and one waist stand. I'm looking forward to getting a thigh stand from Cool Cats. I think the thigh stands from Cool Cats are kind of cute (in their own sense). Asides from the default saddle and waist stands, thigh stand works too. jun97 Posted May 20, 2011 I have 1 each of the volks stands, and one of the coolcat thigh stands. I haven't really used them lately since I got the sofa from volks, all my DD's just sit around all the time now. I'll have one too many to fit on the sofa soon, so I will have to start using them again, but I don't really have them in my photoshoots.
baldylox Posted May 20, 2011 I'm all about thigh stands. I have 4 of them from Cool Cats and three of them use the small round bases. Great for shoots on hard surfaces but not so hot for grass or thick carpets. The one large square base I have rocks tho. I prefer the look of the thigh stands over saddles due to that big prong sticking up in their crotch. On dresses its fine but anything else and saddles look weird to me. Thigh stands you can kind of hide depending on the outfits. But mine have been very stable so I'm real happy with them. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop. OtakuDepot Posted May 22, 2011 There a log of good info here already.... Personally I have on saddle type stand that I got from Dollfie World, it has a large clear acrylic base with a tripod mount in it. I have 3 other thigh stands with the small round acrylic discs from Cool Cats. I love these since they don't take up as much desk space. It's also easier to pose girls closer together since the base is small. http://us.sk-coolcat.com/front/bin/ptdetail.phtml?Part=sta_dd_01 As Balldylox said though, in grass or any uneven surface they would be tough to use as they aren't as wide or heavy. The great advantage of the saddle stand is when taking photos of your girls, you can easily have the camera in one hand and put her on the stand with your other. For the most part you need 2 hands for the other stands. Just something else to consider. **James Otaku Depot's growing family. “Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.” ― Terry Pratchett, Jingo
Kumi Posted May 22, 2011 I have a tip for You, for these small stand bases on surfaces like grass. You can tie to the base (or attach in some other way) a pair of crossed rods (thin carbon/glass fiber, or maybe bicycle spokes) to make the base wider and more stable. I thought of it looking at the RC helicopter's training gear

Are they really so superior to, well let's say coolcat stands? I really like Cool Cats too, great site for clothes and pieces parts. Yeah I like how the thigh stands aren't so obtrusive in pics. Plus the CC ones aren't expensive really. They also offer regular wide square bases for their thigh stands too so now that's a nice option. Another cool stand they have is a double stand so you can have two girls standing super close and still have lots of support! I do wish CC would do a stand that would attach to a tripod tho. That one that Dollfie World used to sell is never in stock anymore. Maybe I can modify one I already have to work on a tripod.... Milk Posted June 19, 2011 Just a little update: I got my coolcat package recently which included a thigh dollstand. I'm actually quite pleased and don't think I need to get another one soon. Since I only have one girl. I got the big square one but I can't remember why and now I wish I'd have gotten the small round base, thehe. home ‣ Victoria Beatrice {DD Beatrice} ▪ DD 2B ▪ DDB 9S ▪ Lavi {TF Murphy} ▪ Mocha {TF Fluffy} ▪ Anastasia {TF Ashley} ▪ TakoTako {TF Piercy} waiting for ‣ DDS Alisaie ▪ DDSB Alphinaud ▪ TinyFox Poison
baldylox Posted June 20, 2011 Oh nice! I'm glad that came in! The wide square base is really sturdy and not prone to tipping over. I have one of those and 3 round ones. The square one can be used outside on dirt and grass and still be sturdy. The smaller round ones are a bit off balance on uneven or bumpy ground. Glad to hear you got it tho! OtakuDepot Posted June 20, 2011 I love their small round thigh stands, makes it easier to have the girls stand next to each other. I need to order 2 more soon but I just wish they didn't cost so stinking much!!!! Milk Posted June 20, 2011 I think I was afraid that I'd accidentally bump my DD including the stand over if I've gotten a small one. Pfft, sometimes I get so clumsy it's not funny anymore. I love their small round thigh stands, makes it easier to have the girls stand next to each other. I need to order 2 more soon but I just wish they didn't cost so stinking much!!!! I'd get a second in a heartbeat but yeah, you're right. They're cost a little more than peanuts, thehe. But now I know which kind of a stand my in-the-far-future-second DD will get. home ‣ Victoria Beatrice {DD Beatrice} ▪ DD 2B ▪ DDB 9S ▪ Lavi {TF Murphy} ▪ Mocha {TF Fluffy} ▪ Anastasia {TF Ashley} ▪ TakoTako {TF Piercy} waiting for ‣ DDS Alisaie ▪ DDSB Alphinaud ▪ TinyFox Poison

MaxArcher Posted June 22, 2011 I really like the Volks ones. I have both of the C-type (offset saddle) stands, wood and metal, and they're both quite nice. The metal one is impressively heavy, and as a bonus, the base fits in the outer pocket of the Volks carrier bags. DD Beatrice - DD Saber/EXTRA
