aquilla429 Posted November 6, 2012 * 7 years of open air display * 7 years of handling * 7 years of playing * 7 years of being taken outside Not to mention the occasions of falling in dirt, falling onto grass, falling into the ocean, falling out of trees, falling off the shelf..... 7 years of....never being, cleaned? 7 years is a long time to go without having a bath. As you can imagine, the result is 7 years of dirt. aquilla429 Posted November 6, 2012 Wow I'm going to have to do this my body came to me very handled. I find that when I use the eraser it it sometimes makes dirt smudges, any tips on avoiding that? I usually wet the sponge, then gently squeeze out the excess, then I simply wipe it over the dirty areas, I always go in one same direction. Once I clear a portion of the dirty area, I will wipe it clean and dry with a tissue, then move onward. I find that's the best way to avoid the dirty water spreading around. I find when I tried to clear too much at one, the dirty water just dries and makes a different place look dirty instead. Poofiemus Posted November 6, 2012 She sure cleaned up nice, even after all that time and grime! . . .gives me a kind of scary thought though: that's only a little more drastic than when I cleaned Agatha when I moved out of my old apartment back in March, and I'd only had her for a year and a half at that point. o.o There was definitely something wrong with the air filtration there. . . In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

chiseen Posted November 7, 2012 Wow. What a big difference! Though I must say, I am a tad bit curious about the "falling into the ocean" part. How did you manage that? I assume it was just near the shore and not deep else fishing her out would be trouble! DX chiseen faceup shop

I assume it was just near the shore and not deep else fishing her out would be trouble! DX When I say I dropped her in the ocean, I really mean I dropped her in the ocean, literally! I even left her there long enough so I could take a picture. I'm such a good doll handler. I was just taking pictures of her in the water, she's a good girl, solid stander usually but she decided to fall backward. I didn't bother trying to catch her, didn't want to ruin my slr. I had to jump in after her after the pic though because she started being quickly swept out to sea lol!!! The water doesn't look too deep in the pictures, but it was actually up to my knees and gets deeper very quickly. I'd totally risk it again too. aiRreyes Posted November 12, 2012 magic eraser doesn't damage the face-up? Home: ~Soleil~ (DD Sendo Erika) ~Lilith~ (DDS Melty) ~Quinzel~ (DDH-07) ~Haruka~ (DD Mio)
Ara Posted November 12, 2012 magic eraser doesn't damage the face-up? Yes and no. If you are using water and gently clean the head it usually goes well. You shouldn't rub too hard over the painted parts, and if a face-up is sealed well it usually can survive a few strokes with the eraser
aquilla429 Posted November 12, 2012 magic eraser doesn't damage the face-up? I only used the eraser slightly dampened with clean water with the excess squeezed out. I then used multiple light strokes in the same direction to genty remove the surface dirt in layers bit by bit. Volks factory face up are VERY solid. I have removed 2 volks factory face ups before, to remove them I had to use an eraser doused in acetone or paint remover and I then had to vigorously scrub at the head to remove the face up. I had to really put my elbow grease into it to get the face off . As long as you use clean water and gentle technique, it is perfectly safe to clean a head in this way. As you can see by my pictures, there is no sign of face up damage or removal to her. Of course if you we're really paranoid about the eraser causing damage, you could probably achieve the same effect with water on a cotton pad or cloth, but it would take a bit more effort and time to do, but should still work if its just for surface dirt. Of course it does. Please kindly look at the above statements and original pictures before jumping to incorrect conclusions and giving wrong answers. Magic erasers would only damage the face up if you really put a lot of effort and time into it. Volks face ups are really stubborn and it is not easy to damage them. As you can see by my pictures, Lilly's face up is not at all damaged by this process. Lilly is my most precious possession and I would never knowingly do something which would harm or ruin her. Lilly is my most precious possession and I would never knowingly do something which would harm or ruin her. a) It's not an incorrect answer. Magic Easer is pretty much the only thing, aside from Remove-Zit, that can remove a face up off a doll. b) Just because you know how much pressure and such to apply as to NOT wipe off a face up doesn't mean that a casual person trying for the first time is going to automatically have the same knowledge. You tell somebody that everything is going to be fine, they go at it like a horny rabbit, and then they are screaming that they don't understand what went wrong. You can explain to people what you did but the only thing that made it go right for you was experience. A person who doesn't have this experience shouldn't try this on a doll just because you said it would be fine. Please don't confuse the masses more than they already are. Jezrah Posted November 12, 2012 Wow... you don't have to jump down her throat... she was just trying to explain that she wouldn't do something that would potentially hurt her doll. And anyway, you don't use magic eraser to purposely remove a face up, you use acetone or paint thinner. Obviously if you feel uncomfortable using a magic eraser on a face, then no one is making you. aquilla429 Posted November 12, 2012 A person who doesn't have this experience shouldn't try this on a doll just because you said it would be fine. Please don't confuse the masses more than they already are. You can say that about absolutely anything and if we all lived by those expectations, people would never try anything themselves for the first time. What a depressing world that would be. I'm pretty sure we are all big enough and ugly enough to realise that viciously scrubbing at a dolls face with an abrasive could cause damage, we're not children! Ara Posted November 12, 2012 Honestly alrick, I seriously think you need to calm down. There was no need of being so passive-aggressive and accuse aquilla of "confusing the masses" while she gave a 100% correct answer. For rubbing off a face-up you need way more than just a simple magic-eraser, and even if you have only that you need to rub a lot. Heck, that's why face-up artists often charge you for removing face-ups, if it would be so easy I wouldn't hate it so much! That's what we both said. A face-up won't just be magically swiped off, but of course it's clear that extreme rubbing with something like a magic-eraser CAN harm the face-up. We said that, and it's the truth. Don't jump down our throat and also don't assume that everyone except for you is a mad idiot too dumb to understand this or clean their doll.

I see then I was thinking that magic eraser would be a solution to minor stains? and good thing I don't exert too much pressure when handling dolls. I really do hanle them with care xD Just wanna know about magic eraser since I'm planning on buying one for emergency case or what Thank you Aquilla Home: ~Soleil~ (DD Sendo Erika) ~Lilith~ (DDS Melty) ~Quinzel~ (DDH-07) ~Haruka~ (DD Mio)

It can get off *dirt*, but not actual stains. If it has sunk into the vinyl, even in a minor way, you're going to need Oxy or Remove Zit to get that out. Magic Erasers are really cheap though, so you may as well pick some up to wipe your dolls down with. Just be a little careful around the faceup (don't press down as hard as you possibly can - but like others said, it's actually hard to remove Volks faceups with the Magic Eraser, even though it is an abrasive like sandpaper), but otherwise they shouldn't hurt your doll. Are you ready to rock? ^_^
