SQ Lab Head?

Hello! I looked around (kinda quickly) on here for this, but didn't find it. So.

 

I may be getting my first DD this month--I've only had experience with resin dolls, though.

I would like to buy a head with a face-up from SQ Lab and a normal MDD body from VOLKS.

I've never had either, so I had a few questions.

 

Will the skin colors match up? I don't intend on getting 'white' skin, just the normal.

Also, what size wig would a head from SQ Lab wear? Would it be a SD sized wig?

And how does one put the eyes in a doll's head? Will normal white eye putty work like the resin dolls?

To answer your questions:

SQ lab normal resin matches DD normal skin. 8-9" wigs fit a bit big but are usable, SD size is usually 9-10" and that'll be way too big. Regular eye putty will work fine, the SQ headcaps are usually not secured so I use a bit of putty to hold that on as well.

There's a forum dedicated to SQ labs and obitsu, but that'll save you some time digging around in there

To add to that, some of the newer heads have magnetic closing to keep the head from falling off but you should double check before purchasing if that is a concern. Otherwise, I have an SQ lab head also but I just keep it together with tape.

Oh. SQ Lab heads are made of resin? And VOLKS uses vinyl, right? If that's the case, does the fact that they're two different materials make it look a bit odd? Or does Volks also make their DD heads out of resin? I'm sorry, hahah, I'm so bad at this. I really appreciate the help, though! Also thanks for the forum. I'll look around in there, too. <:

I've had Tana for just over a year now. (older style SQ07 "Tsubaki" without the magnets) When chibinezumi did her face-up, there was tape on her head, which I though was a great idea, since I'd put a few bits of sculpey around the rim to keep her cap on.

Being resin, I thought the color match to a DDII might be off a bit, but it was due to my using some older Testors semi gloss paint as a sealer. Otherwise, she matches quite well..

I've used the Volks 8-9" wig as a base for Tana, and I've been happy with the results, if yours seems a bit loose, there's plenty of variety of wig caps out there to make up for it.

Regular Volks putty or the white style of Blu-tak or equivalent works just fine or securing her eyes, use what seems best for you.

Ahh, okay. I'm just worried about resin with vinyl I guess. I like everything to match up so-so. I hate that, though. It makes obtaining dolls a lot more difficult. But those SQ Lab heads are just too cute!

Yes, I have had some concerns about the resin and vinyl as a combination. I'm sadly very picky and like my materials to match up all nice and perfect. But, the head I found from SQ Labs that I want is just adorable and my only other option for the time being is the new MDD girl on the Volks JP site, and while she is cute she just isn't what I'm looking for. I wanted a poutier looking girl where as she is just too happy.

 

I have white eye putty in my resin girls, so I may just use that for the MDD as well. <: And thanks for the tips about the wigs / caps. I'll keep that in mind in case I mess up when buying her some hair.~

If I get a chance I can take a picture for you later.my head isn't that different as far as the vinyl vs resin I'm picky about that too and it doesn't bother me. Of course I think it varies from head to head. Different resin batches vary in color . I know I've had that problem with matching resin bjds.

My head is new so I don't know if there's a difference from the older ones as far as color and texture.

Also I've seen variation in the sizes . Some sq lab heads look good on a DD body while some would be better suited for MDD bodies.

I saw a few pics of SQ heads different skin toned than DD bodies, for this reason I'm pretty unsure if I should get any or not...

Eeee the whole difference in color raises another question for me about a resin head and a vinyl body... They materials will yellow over time... Wouldn't they yellow at different speeds? I think I may just go with a full standard model from VOLKS, like Rena. :\ I really liked this one faceup from SQ Lab, but I don't want to get too picky and end up less-than-pleased with my doll. I couldn't forgive myself if I was unhappy with my new girl. I'd feel so bad. But I don't want a standard model because it wouldn't feel as personal. Ugh internal conflicts.

Is this the head you were looking at? From your description, I thought it might be a "Hime."

If you don't like the idea of the SQ Labs head, what about getting someone who is a talented modder to modify a blank DD head to be pouty? I've seen some great examples on Yahoo Japan Auctions.

I thought so. I bought this head from Yahoo Japan Auctions probably a year ago, so I imagine it's probably a little different. But it was the super-grumpy, upside-down-"V" mouth that made me fall for her.

I have another question or two, but I don't want to waste another topic on it,

since it's so closely related to my previous question(s) posted here...

 

I have been looking at purchasing either;

the new MDD model Rena from the Volks JP site or

a head from SQ Lab and a MDD body from the Volks US site.

 

Rena sold out this morning I'm guessing as she is listed to be restocked.

I'm trying to get this ASAP with Christmas coming up and whatnot.

 

I can settle for a MDD body, and I like the SQ Lab heads.

But I am confused about the color?

 

I have been looking at the pre-painted pre-order Hime head.

Listed as ' SQ03 Hime default face up(01) head pre-order. '

The way they describe color... They lost me. Hahaha.

They state

'(this face up is Normal skin color default)'

But then they also state

' Skin colors : nomal skin, white skin (default is white skin) '

 

Does this mean this head will come to me in white resin, instead of 'normal'?

I wanted a 'normal' skinned doll, as the 'white' skin does not appeal to me.

Or, do I have to e-mail them, telling them my desired skin color?

I have tried to e-mail them before a few days ago, but I've yet to receive a response.

I'm very worried because I've been having some financial problems and cannot risk losing money with an order I am unhappy with. My fiance has agreed to help me out as I will be paying him back, so I really do not want to risk buying something, only to end up not happy.

 

Also, since these are pre-order, how long will it be until I actually receive the head after payment?

 

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

I've heard so many doll owners claiming DD are so much easier to deal with than resin.

As far as I know heads are available in both normal and white skin.

Ordering an head, it'll came in normal skin by default, unless you request it in white.

Also, I know they're pretty slow replying to emails.

What really lost me is some of the heads are listed as default white, and others are listed as default normal... I'm a bit confused. I don't want to order a head, and then finally have it arrive in white, you know? >//^//<' I may just play it safe and order a head that is listed as default normal. I'm also concerned since I haven't received an answer to my e-mail which had some question for them. So anxious.

Yes I am pretty sure I want their 'normal' skin. But I cannot figure out which heads are listed for which color. Some heads are listed for default white, and others are listed as default normal. Should I limit my selection of possible purchases to just default normal selections?

Fsshaer- If the mouth is the biggest deal, Rainie (in my sig) is an 01 head with her default mouth completely removed and sanded smooth then a new mouth painted on. I have a ton of pics of her modded but unpainted head if you want to see what it looks like.

 

If you are really sold on the SQ Labs head, go for it because their sculpts are definitely adorable and unique. But if you want an all vinyl girl, having one of the standard heads modded is also an option but does take longer because of needing a faceup. Even for some (aka me) that's not much of a deterrent because Tamayuki and my husband's Yuriko have 6 months of random photos on the forums before I got around to getting their faces done.

Bellatrix is right I think all the heads come in both I just wrote normal skin tone on the order form
