Limited editions - how limited?

I wasn't thinking about this much until my hubby questioned me about the quantity of dolls issued as limited editions. And I realised I just don't know. And now we are constantly arguing about the scale of the hobby ))

 

So probably anyone can give us a hint, please. How many dolls are usually issued within limited edition - 50 or 100, 200?

i was curious about that too, i would like to know how many dolls valks actually sells and how many of those are limited.

I think, at least several hundreds.

Because making the metal mold for head, the stencils for faceup etc. is expensive and for a very limited run it would be economically unprofitable. The same, probably, will be for wigs/clothes/accessories. The smaller run, the bigger the costs, and every limited DD is sold as a fullset - with faceup and everything else.

 

This is not the resin market, where You can have 20 or 50 pcs limited runs - because You can cast a resin head in an inexpensive silicon mold and sell them blank, even only the head.

And the faceups - if someone is ordering one - are made by hand.

I wonder about how limited each limited girl is too. I think it also depends on the licensing agreement. Some girls are more limited than others.

I also thought it was the licensing agreement but I think some of it may be related to the way Volk's does business. If it was just the licensing of the character then why not have their regular clothing (such as the Kyoto 8 maid outfits) be produced in much larger amounts? It seems like they could make twice as many of the product and probably still sell out.

 

I think it may have to do with Volks business strategy to create a product that is very elusive and gives it's owners a special feeling for being able to get something that others can't. Similar to the way bidding and winning on an Ebay auction used to really drive the prices up.

 

I think this creates a customer base that is "hungry" to buy your products and frequently doesn't care as much about the cost. This may have something to do with their customer's being "fans" of their products, so much so that they would spend time posting on forums dedicated to their products.

 

 

On the other hand, I could be completely wrong and have no clue at all. Just an idea.

I seriously wish they'd do blank runs of the limited molds. I'd die for a chance to pick up Nia's or Yuki's head and get some one to customize it.

There were rumors, that Moe/Natsuki mold may be the next one to be released as option head, but so far it remained only a rumor. Moe and Natsuki were the mascots of Dollfie Dream 7th Anniversary, instead of usual Aoi/Yukino duo, so some of us hoped to see them available at Volks, but...

See I wouldn't even really care much about that, the head molds are really cute I can see a lot of potential in them! I'd love for them to release the Natsuki/Moe head and also the Yuki/Rina head for customizing.

I would love a Natsuki's head mold. Would sent it to Hikaru for remakeup, then ????, lastly PROFIT!

 

For Yuki and Rina, tough luck. Good to wish once in a while haha
