DDH01 Quest

So! Long story short, I love the versatility of the DDH01 head when modded, and I've decided I wanted to try modding these cuties myself. I'm scurrying off to the Volks store in about ten minutes where I'll pick up one or two.

 

I wanted to make a thread just for modding DDH01 heads, and I also felt that it'll be fun to dobleepent how it goes. It'll be a learning process for me, and maybe someone else will benefit from it? Anyway, so here's my DDH01 Quest List of a bunch of really moe archetypes I wanna try to make from just the DDH01 head.

 

Head Goals:

o1. :3 face, cute and exciteable

o2. Shy sweetie (like Fluttershy !!!)

o3. Tsundere, sassy (Taiga?)

o4. Delicate, unsure expression

o5. Calm, relaxed (like Mami!)

 

If anyone has any suggestions too for some types of characters you think would be fun to do, feel free to suggest!

Well, I am looking forward to seeing these. I love modded DDH01 heads too, I've been meaning to post my new girl for a bit now... I'm just not very good with a camera.

I'd like to suggest "smug/evil" as another personality type to try.

Smug/evil sounds good! I should do some sketches later for planning. Here's a WIP of the first one:

Edit: Five hours later, here's a photo of the finished mod that I painted over with Photoshop for the proposed face-up I'll do for it later.

I have a recommendation!

 

You should try to carve in a little of the mouth line to add depth to the faceup when it's done. My Maya has a tiny notch for her mouth and it makes a big difference in person versus the totally flat surface on a modded face~

Thank you everyone! PlasticFantastic, that's a great idea but I'm not that advanced yet! Maybe the next one. My hands ache right now. I'm still a bit scared about carving too in right now.

 

Also, I'll do a detailed step-by-step soon on how I did this so that other people can learn with me. I hope you guys will enjoy it!

Wow, that's some major modding! If you intend to do more like this, it might be worth getting a Dremel.

 

I vote for the :3 face; it just seems to fit with the eye shape to my mind.

Really nice work (or mock ups anyway)! I love the style, actually, it's like the style I used for my girl too...

The concepts look really cute! I like the painted mouths myself, it works well for 01 heads too. I did one I like so much that I'll probably do another one in WS someday

I've never used a dremel before! Oh man, I feel intimidated but it's a really good idea. My hands were super worn out after all that sanding, haha. I couldn't find my diamond file set I got from Volks too, so that also made things more difficult. D:!

 

Here's a WIP-- it's on the left. The right is PlasticFantastic's doll that I'm also working on.

 

 

I think with gloss the painted mouth does pass okay-- I'm glad to see that people don't mind it. I really love jadepixel's work, too! I do want to carve and sculpt the :3 mouth eventually-- gotta work up the nerve for it.

I didn't know, that DD heads are modable, because I'm only used to resin so far.

OMGOMGOMGOMG my 04!!!! She's looking so great!!!! Chien you were definitely the right artist for the job I can't wait to see more photos!

I have resin dolls but I don't usually mod them. I think the vinyl heads are easier to mod than resin ones!

Hey everyone! I took all the advice very seriously-- such as about how her nose was too far-gone, and that I should carve a mouth. So, I went back and modded her some more-- I shaped her nose to be more prominent, and then carved a mouth a little smile for her. I didn't realize that the mouth mod wouldn't be that noticeable after I painted her, but it's really there, haha! Here are some photos:

 

 

 

 

 

I've done all I can with this head now, so it's time to move onto a new one. I'll most likely sell this one on Ebay or something to fund the next one to continue DDH01 quest! So far I've managed shy/pouty, and now energetic/spirited.

This was my first thought too but I've got plenty on my plate as it is. I think Raven would also ban me from looking at DD pics that aren't ours if I tried. If an identical head was made in the future I'd be more than severely tempted.
