scripple Posted May 24, 2011 I saw a lot of you derail some other thread talking about D&D so I thought I would start this post. I've played lots and lots of role playing games in my life, although it's been a while since I last did it regularly. Actually part of what got me into the DD scene was the idea of doing a little role playing while telling stories with / about the DDs. You can see an example in my database post here on the forums where Rin describes herself and the other girls in her own special way and responds to people's posts. But since this is the off topic forum, back to the original subject, role playing games. As I said I've played lots of them, although D&D is definitely not my favorite. The way D&D is structured with it's class system leads to a lot of D&D games not being all that role playing oriented, but more filled with cookie cutter characters and a lot of die rolling combat. But it's not necessarily a bad place to start if you're new to it all as it's popular. Really of course it' comes down to the group of people you're playing with. A good set of players and especially a good ref / dungeon master / game master / pick title you like can make any system or setting a lot of fun. Anyway, since a lot of you indicated you were interested in this stuff but new to it I figured I'd post here to give you a chance to carry on your conversation and to offer to answer questions you might have. Note that I'm out of date on D&D so i can't really tell you much about the latest version, but I've played in plenty other of systems and settings so feel free to ask or converse away. Pupi Posted May 24, 2011 I always wanted to join a live role play game but currently I have no time. Here we have the most awesome live RPG of all over Italy: they have they own forest too! I have watched their games / battles and heard them stories one time and I felt in love of them world! I have tried to play with my boyfriend and friend to D&D and LOTR RPG, but I haven't liked it a lot! I think a DD RPG would be cute, nice to make some friends and to share some infos about our girls^^ enthusiast pasta girl - she/her - power bi Mini Mode Lab
OtakuDepot Posted May 24, 2011 I've been wanting to play D&D since I saw E.T. when it was first released - a long time ago!! I even bought the D&D Basic game when I was a kid: I never got a chance to play when I was a kid and lost track of the game in my early adult life. I've been interested in playing again over the last few years. Mostly now I've satiated myself by listening to podcasts such as "Critical Hit" from the guys who do the Major Spoilers podcast: http://www.majorspoilers.com/category/major-spoilers-podcast/critical-hit or the Penny Arcade (and later joined by Wil Wheaton) D&D podcast: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/podcasts.aspx I've also enjoyed these series of Videos of D&D sessions: Robot Chicken: Penny Arcade Expo: What I love about these videos or podcasts is how much fun they have. The Penny Arcade ones are especially great, especially the Expo one. Very funny stuff! I do have the Players Handbook 1 & 2 as well as the Dungeon Master's Guide books, all in 4th edition, which I enjoy reading from time to time. Just last week I ordered a bunch of paints, tools, and a few pewter figures to paint for fun. One day I hope to actually get to play the game (haha) but I just hope I don't get a crappy group that ends up ruining the game for me. **James. Alphakitty Posted May 24, 2011 Haha, I have a bunch of D&D stuff too even though I've never played. ^^; I even had a subscription to Dungeon back when it was an actual magazine and not online-only. I tried to convince my friends to play with me in highschool, but sadly I was unsuccessful. I still hold out hope that one day I'll get to, but right now all the friends I have who DO want to are all the way across the country. DivinitaAria Posted May 25, 2011 I've always wanted to learn how to play D&D same with my best friend! There's a teacher at our high school who used to play (also is into anime!) that we wanted to ask to teach us. I'm not sure if I'd have the patience to learn though, although I'd love to try! I should've went to some D&D 101 panel at Gencon Indy last year Rise - Rise // Rise #2 - Rise // Ritsuko - 2B // Momo - M.O.M.O. // Nayuki -Mikuru // Romi - 09 // Makoto - Sailor Jupiter // Mikasa - DD07 (WIP) Waiting on: DDH-25 for custom Akechi 🥰
scripple Posted May 25, 2011 You can always get your friends together or skype or something like that. Distance isn't as much of a problem as it used to be. As for learning how to play, it's really not hard especially if you're just a player and not the one running the game. Really, if the person running the game knows anything, all you should have to do is provide the actions and personality of your character. The system mechanics are generally quite simple. The mechanics and dice are really there to provide some randomness to the game and represent level of difficulty to perform an action. Honestly if you know anything about probability theory you'll discover quite quickly that most people who design role playing games don't. The game mechanics of most systems just aren't very good, so I suggest picking the game based on the setting or genre not the rules. Check out my new DollFun website. littlebearries Posted May 25, 2011 I play D&D every Wednesday night... I'm the wizard in our group, which mostly means I watch other people get beaten up and phone in my attacks from 50 yards away, LOL. Anyhow, I'd be up for some sort of game... whether it be some version of D&D or some sort of DD roleplaying game (... at what point do all these "D"s become confusing? )

Lizik-chan Posted June 9, 2011 I haven't been playing regularly for ages... But previously I've plaid World of Darkness series as a Toreador Vampire character. Their Vampire line and the unique take and look at the Vampire world are the best thing which could be brought to the genre. I was also playing Star Wars RPG for quiet a time. But currently I’m only playing on MMORPG role-play servers… And I totally agree that organizing DD RPG would be quite fun. Some easy anime-stile rules like the BESM one could be used and it could resemble Rozen Maiden series in some aspects probably. I won’t mind to have a more detailed and serious dissuasion on the prospect of such a game )))
AntElitist Posted June 9, 2011 I wish I have enough DD to perform a Role playing game. yeah. I just have that Crazy imagination but only have 1 to do my poor bidding rofl. On another note: Fallout 3 is awesome.

Their Vampire line and the unique take and look at the Vampire world are the best thing which could be brought to the genre. My limited RPing experience was when I was studying abroad in Finland. It was actually a huge group and they were all kind enough to speak English for me because my Finnish is not good. Good times were had by all and they were super nice people. Also really REALLY into the SCA too. I've always been curious about SCA. Yaaay, White Wolf! I did some illustration work for them a couple years ago before they went bottom up and sold. My husband was a model for them for a time and he's throughout the World of Darkness books.... annnnddddd... this one: White Wolf by dollflip, on Flickr He is, of course, on the left. And, no, he does not wear a choker necklace in the rl.
Ravendruid Posted February 2, 2012 I know this is an old thread, but I read through it and couldn't resist chiming in. I used to have a bunch of old 2nd edition Dnd stuff, until the house flooded and I lost most of it, still have the Spelljammer and Planescape boxed sets and the player handbook, as well as the World Builder Guide and recently found another copy of the Dungeon builders guide. I have a lot of 3rd/3.5 edition stuff, including all of the Eberron setting stuff. I bought a copy of the 4th edition players guide, but wasn't impressed so I sold it. I also have a few WOD books, Vampire: the Requiem, Mage: the Ascension, and Hunter: the Vigil. I love the setting, and it seems a lot more conducive to actual ROLE-playing than DnD. My favorite, however, is GURPS. I have many books for that system, they offer a lot more fluff than ,ost others. It's a little bit complicated to start out with, but I really love the flexibility. The only problem is that like many others here, I have NEVER played any pen and paper RPGs. I LOVE reading through the books, rolling up characters and imagining new settings, but the only other person I regularly interact with who has ANY interest in fantasy is my wife, and I just have never felt comfortable enough to actually run anything, even if it is just the two of us. It annoys her to no end, how much time I've spent reading them and the money I've spent buying them, but I just can't wrap my head around how to both run one well and teach her the mechanics at the same time. Someday, I'll find a like-minded group. The idea of a DD gaming group actually does sound pretty cool, though! kymaera Posted February 2, 2012 I haven't played in a bit. Got into D&D in college playing 2nd edition. After college, didn't play for a few years. Played with a group on 3.5 for a few years until our DM moved and the group broke up. Btw...have to share this story I did a while back
SakuraSylph Posted February 3, 2012 Been a while here, also. I've tried a few systems in person, including Shadowrun, D&D 3.5, and BESM. None of them really stuck for very long, sadly, which originally surprised me because I expected to like tabletop RPGs because I liked video game RPGs. Not really sure what happened. Could've been my groups, or could've been that my expectations for the game were way off. I still have all my D&D stuff though. The best success I had was actually with Neverwinter Nights, where I played all three campaigns co-op and ended up with a character I was very satisifed with. (I include it because it uses D&D 3.0 rules for the game system). Maybe things just work better when a computer does all the math instead of humans? DD D&D could be great for comedic value. Great example, kymaera. SakuraSylph
Ravendruid Posted February 3, 2012 Adding other humans into the mix really changes a lot, I think. That's why I've never spent too much time in MMOs. I always starts off really fun, usually just me and Corset running around the world, questing together, but eventually we always end up thinking along the lines of "We should really join a guild, since that's what you're "supposed" to do, and it opens up a lot more options". invariably we end up quitting the game shortly after that. Even if the guild has a lot of great people, and whether it's big or small, the expectations surrounding working with other people and being responsible towards them ends up making the game feel like work. I've always had more fun with one and two player games, perhaps that's why I've never been too diligent in seeking out a table-top group.
