Some input needed on paints

Recommended Posts

Chrono_San

so i have finally ordered a head from volks for my Silica project, and i did read a tutorial and stuff on face ups, and all required paints was available on the US volks site. problem is that the US site do not ship internationally, and the japanese international site do not have these paints.

so my first question is, does regular hobby acrylics such as Vallejo and Citadel paints work?

second thing is the powder spray sealer thing. it's not available on the japanese site either, and usually spray do not ship overseas. any other way to get it or any equal spray-type that fills the same role? (that might be a brand available internationally)

Here are some quotes I found that can help maybe.

It looks like any high quality/high pigment paints will work:

If you want to try it yourself, you need a few things:

1) Mr. SuperClear or Zoukeimura (ZM) finishing spray. Some people use Testor's Dullcote, but there are a lot of mixed reviews on this.

2. Acrylic paints - Volks sells good ones, but as long as you use good quality paints (something with a high pigment), you should be ok.

3. Pastels to make powder for blush.

4. Good (tiny for detail, large for blush) paint brushes and a steady hand, lol.

Be sure to start by spraying a coat of sealant (MSC or ZM) before starting. It keeps the paint from staining the doll's face, especially if you need to start over.

Some artist's recommend using multiple coats of sealant, alternating with painting things like eyelashes, blush, lips, etc. Others just say go for it. But let each layer dry before moving on.

Many suggest getting a filtered mask (the big ones, not the paper kind) to wear when using the sealants, as they're known to be toxic. At the very least, use it in a well ventilated area with low humidity.

Here are some suggestions for other sprays:

Well, You can use almost any clear flat acrylic spray, but some may yellow in time or react with vinyl.

I'd say buy Mr Super Clear Flat standard (not the UV-Cut version). It just works.

Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear is also used for faceups, or MrHobby TopCoat Flat.

But MSC and Zoukeimura are most widely recommended.

MrHobby UV Cut version seemed to cause problems for wgn_white:

It seems that the Mr. Hobby Flat that I mean to protect thee face-up who ruin it.

Her face turns YELLOWISH and there's some "black spot" since the spray layer wear off.

So, if you're using Mr. Hobby... perhaps you should just use Zoukeimura since the first place.

Mr Super Clear Flat (MSC, the standard one) is one of the best sealants used in faceups.

Most artists I know are using it.

I've heard that UVCut version is much worse because it yellows (because of UV, ironically...).

Yeah, I'm using the UV Cut version.

It's like killing her to wipe her face, since there's no guarantee she will look the same. (If you know what I mean)

1.) Testor's Dullcote is a DIRT MAGNET. It is also not perfectly color neutral...it has a yellow cast. Horrible stuff, stay away.

2.) I really like ZM spray...I haven't tried Mr. Super Clear, but I like the paper-like texture the ZM gives to vinyl. It is a very conducive texture for doing the faceup...it tends to "take" the chalk pastel very well.

3.) Junky Spot is actually selling another type of matte spray: Vallejo Aerosol Acrylic Varnish. I'm not sure how well it works, but I suspect if Emory is selling it, it's at least a reasonable alternative.

I am not sure ... but how doese people get ZM-spray in the EU ? ...

I know volks.jp doesent send it out (am i right, i am not 100% sure, but i think my last status was that they dont send to Germany ...)

Volks.usa and privat person also cant send it out because of hard rulez after 11.september ...

So doese anyone know a shop in the EU which sell this product? ^^ ...

There are some Ebay sellers who send by sea freight which is long wait but cheap ($6). The postman told me that aerosols are supposed to be not shipped by air. The alternative ground only or ground and sea methods are slow.

You want exactly ZoukeiMura Spray or may it be MrHobby Super Clear Flat?

Because MSC I can buy in hobby shops without any biggest problems.

It's used by plastic scale modelers and figure collectors along with paints and other tools.

You can probably buy it from Poland, too

I don't know if I am really answering the questions or not but I hope this helps.

Another possibility is Citadel Purity Seal. You can get it at Games Workshop.

It's very similar to MSC. Sometimes it shines a little, but not too much.

PS is much cheaper than MSC and comes in bigger bottles. If you use MSC as the first and last layer of sealant and PS for the other layers, there is no shine at all.

PS gives a nice grid to the heads, which makes pastels stick nicely.

Maybe this helps you a little.

You could also try to look at some online shops for dolls. I know that at least some BJD based online stores in Europe sell MSC.

For example Think Pink in Netherlands.

Purity Seal, i do actually already have that. i'm a long time warhammer hobbyist, didn't really realize that it's spray varnish this was about, since it was mentioned as "powder spray" in a tutorial on face-ups. but seem,s like i should get some mr clean aswell, need to wait like 40 days from china to get ith ere though >< and my head probably arrives before that. i'll see if any swedish retailer have it first though

There's a review of CPS for bjd faceups - http://www.meggilu.com/2012/08/reviewing-citadel-purity-seal-from.html

Basically, it's not bad but MSC is better

And CPS apparently is more like semi-gloss, not matt and that's also a drawback.

didn't GW make different types of gloss and matt sprays?. otherwise, do vallejo have some matt equal type or something? vallejo and citadel are easy to find here

EDIT: Vallejo have a matt varnish spray, it's not satin, so it should not be gloss at all. question is if anyone have tried it?. the army painter also have a matt varnish spray

EDIT AGAIN: i ordered mr hobby super clear flat from that german hobby site, hopefully the order don't fail or anything. my next quesion regards recommended pastels for blush, any recommended brand? the standard set is out of stock on volks

I like rembrandt pastels for faceups. I use a butter knife to scrape some pastel powder off, and then apply it with a cotton swab or a dry paintbrush. My local art shop sells broken pastels at a discount, and that's just fine for what I do

Just be sure to use a dust mask when using pastels, and clean up with a damp cloth after. If you're used to sealing figures then you probably have a ventilator already, that will work fine.
