SisterKyoya Posted February 1, 2013 D Gray Man, Black Butler, Soul Eater, Just finished the D.Gray-man anime and reading the manga. I love Allen Walker! And Soul Eater was just awesome. Soul Eater is just all kinds of awesome. I have vinyl keychains of Soul, Black Star, and Stein on my backpack, Raven has Maka with his keys, and I still want to make a DDS/DDB Crona. Just imagining Tama-chan leading Crona around ("I don't know how to deal with this!") and Tama telling him that it will be fine, is enough to make me into a puddle. Tamayuki in adorable big brother mode. Working some more through Tiger & Bunny today too. The chibi T&B figures are ones I would completely flip over if I ever got them. Kinda like when my sister gave me some Shakespeare stuff for my birthday in high school. I was so happy I cried for a solid five minutes. My family thought I had lost my mind. ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
DJStarstryker Posted February 1, 2013 I'm currently watching what is now the oldest anime (until Rose of Versailles comes out) in my DVD/BluRay anime collection - Mysterious Cities of Gold. Too bad the US DVDs only have the English dub. However, I'm kinda surprised. This is the first time I've ever seen this show (no, I missed it when it aired on TV) and there's things that stick out. I expected the adults to have the typical '70s-'80s anime dubbing style (talking really fast and monotone to get the lip flaps). But there were things I didn't expect: 1) There are ACTUAL kids voice acting the kids. That's rare in animated stuff period, so kinda neat. It's usually adults trying to sound like kids (mostly women, even for the boys). 2) The kids are really good, especially the one for Esteban. They blow the adult voice actors out of the water in quality. They sound much more natural, instead of the terrible old anime dub style like the adults. I like this show a lot so far. I'm glad I decided to go for this show on a whim. Are you ready to rock? ^_^
SisterKyoya Posted February 1, 2013 I love Mysterious Cities of Gold! Even mention of it makes the theme song go through my head, and I don't remember hardly any others (except Inspector Gadget & Duck Tales.) I watched MCG a ton when I was a kid, but didn't see the whole series until about 5 years ago. I can say as an adult it was even more interesting because I understood the cultural and historical references. I really wish I could remember more of the "Japanamation" that I saw as a kid, but I can only ever remember Mapletown. I also have to say that I totally love Hamtaro. Come to think of it, I'm surprised that Tamayuki hasn't snagged my Hamtaro and Bijou plushies yet. ~Sister Kyoya (who has spent much of her life watching cartoons) Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
baldylox Posted February 1, 2013 Holy crap! Other people know Cities of Gold? Amazing! I absolutely love that show! A few years ago I was doing some random digging around online and saw a still pic of the Golden Condor airship they used in that show and it sparked a flood of memories of the show and me watching it at my grandmothers house after school while waiting for my parents to come pick me up! I think it played on Nickelodeon back then, it would be the early to mid 80's or so.... Anyways, seeing that image made me do more digging and I finally found out that they were planning a DVD release in a few months. So as soon as that set was made available I was all over it. When it arrived in the mail I marathoned that show over the course of about a week. And it's a LONG show too. I never saw half the episodes from the start and I also never saw the ending with all the crazy Olmec stuff in it. It was an awesome show that I know I'll rewatch again. I'm just glad to hear others here saw and enjoyed this show as kids too! As for other anime I'm watching, I started up on "Bakuman" and it's really cool. I can't wait to get into more of it this weekend. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

SchroedingersCat Posted February 2, 2013 Holy crap! Other people know Cities of Gold? Amazing! I absolutely love that show! Yep, it's one of the classics. I utterly adored that show when I was a child. Picked it up on DVD about 5 years ago. I'm currently watching what is now the oldest anime in my DVD/Bluray anime collection Whaaaaat? You mean you don't have anything older that 1982? No Lupin? No Gundam? No G-Force (gatchaman)? Even Macross predates MCoG, if only by a few months. I'm being a little bit silly there, but most people I've met who have MCoG usually have a few titles from the 70s in their collections as well. Cool that you're getting Rose of Versailles, and thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that it had been licenced. Sooooo adding this one to my collection. XD Now with +/- 15% more uncertainty! DJStarstryker Posted February 2, 2013 I'm glad so many people here have seen Mysterious Cities of Gold. I'm definitely loving this show a lot. It's really neat that they have the segments at the end of each episode talking about real historical stuff. Also, if you have the US DVD set, watch the bonuses! It was neat to see this bonus of the voice actors redubbing a scene about 25 years after they originally did it. Whaaaaat? You mean you don't have anything older that 1982? No Lupin? No Gundam? No G-Force (gatchaman)? Even Macross predates MCoG, if only by a few months. I really don't care for giant robot anime in general. The only one I've found that I like is Gurren Lagann. The only bit of Lupin I've ever seen is the Castle of Cagliostro movie. I seem to have a hard time getting into most anime from the '70s. I tend to either find it boring or I don't like the animation. I don't know why. Cool that you're getting Rose of Versailles, and thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware that it had been licenced. Sooooo adding this one to my collection. XD Yeah. Right Stuf/Nozomi Entertainment is awesome. They don't seem to let age of a show scare them, like I feel like most of the other US-based anime licensing companies do. I have seen all of Rose of Versailles. I watched it several years back fansubbed. It's an amazing show. I highly suggest it to people here. Especially ones who are fans of Utena, because Utena took some aspects from Rose of Versailles. Mainly in the way that Utena's character herself is very much based off of Lady Oscar from the show. But as an anime fan, I feel the need to buy anime that I really enjoy, just to support the creators who made it and the company who released it to the US. So even though I've seen it before, gotta support it. Also, want to watch it again. Are you ready to rock? ^_^

Never saw MCoG, it was never aired in my country. I will have to look it up seeing the positive recommendations on it. As for the others, Hubby and I loved G-force growing up. Also watched Voltes V and Daimos (part of the Robot Romance Trilogy). Watched Mazinger Z too. Gah! I'm showing my age. LOL Lemme see, what other older anime did I watch? Don't know if anyone is even familiar with these but these are a few older Japanese anime titles that they dubbed in our language and showed in my country. I think I was already in college then when they did this. But I loved the stories. Heidi, Dog of Flanders, Candy Candy (this I saw dubbed in English when I was a kid), Huckleberry, Remi, Lupin, Star Blazers, Ultraman, Tom Sawyer, Astroboy (another one I saw as a kid), Princess Sara, Robotech, Dragonball, Transformers... to name a few. My goodness, looking back, I certainly did watch quite a bit of anime, although, mind you, back then we just called them cartoons. Ah, the memories... We have our own BLOG. SchroedingersCat Posted February 2, 2013 But as an anime fan, I feel the need to buy anime that I really enjoy, just to support the creators who made it and the company who released it to the US. So even though I've seen it before, gotta support it. Also, want to watch it again. I absolutely agree. If I enjoy a series, I always buy it. Provided there is a translated release at least. Some licensors make it ridiculously hard for me to give them my money though. And in the absence of a licenced translation, I buy some merchandise. Katnaper: I remember a hell of a lot of those shows, and also I always just thought of them as cartoons. Until Evangelion. The first time I saw that (tuned in just a couple of minutes after the opening theme for the evenings first episode, the used to screen two at a time here) I utterly loved it. It reminded me of all the shows I watched as kid. And then the opening theme on the second episode started and WHAM... At that point I realised pretty much every cartoon I loved was Japanese... I swear it's all the fault of Robotech though. I must have watched the Macross Saga a dozen times. Imagine my surprise when I discovered there was more Macross XD Now with +/- 15% more uncertainty! My goodness, looking back, I certainly did watch quite a bit of anime, although, mind you, back then we just called them cartoons. Ah, the memories... AHH!!! Someone else who remembers Mazinger Z?!?! It took me forever to track down because when it aired here, they renamed it Tranzor Z, for some reason, so that's how I remembered it. That was my all time favorite show growing up, though Cities of gold and Robotech "Spartacus and the Sun Beneath the Sea" were close seconds. Didn't watch Dragonball until I got into High School. Transformers was pretty cool, too, but I never got to watch it nearly as much as I would have liked because it was deemed "too violent" by my parents, though Robotech wasn't? MAybe the fact that Robotech dealt more with the human side of war had something to do with it. Speed Racer was another that I loved growing up. Still torn on whether or not I want to watch the Live action version. Daddy of: Yuriko, Sohi, Miku and SK's many kids
katnaper Posted February 2, 2013 At that point I realised pretty much every cartoon I loved was Japanese... Yeah, the other American cartoons never really caught my eye except for the Disney movies. It was only of late that I realized that a majority of the cartoons I liked as a kid were Japanese. Heck, Hello Kitty and all my Sanrio things should have given me a clue that I was an otaku in the making. AHH!!! Someone else who remembers Mazinger Z?!?! I Hehehe. Nice to know I wasn't the only one who watched it growing up. Me and my brothers loved watching it and Voltes V. When the internet started to become more accessible and I discovered I could find it online, I watched Voltes V again because I just could not believe that the ending was just that. It needs a better ending IMHO but that's just me. I still loved the story and devoured each new anime that featured robots. I really loved Macross too. As for their (the Japanese) live action dramas, Shaider was my all time fave. We have our own BLOG. Please visit us at the House of Nyan by clicking this link or our sig above. See you there. baldylox Posted February 2, 2013 I also watched a lot of the stuff yall saw growing up... The Great Mazinga ( That's what it was called when I saw it on TV here ) Speed Racer G-Force ( Battle of the Planets ) Transformers Mighty Orbots ( GAWD that show was cool ) Ultraman ( live action man in a rubber suit madness ) And if you hold your memories dear of the old Speed Racer TV show, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRbleepSTANCES watch the movie! It is beyond horrible and atrocious. I have no idea what kind of drugs the Wachowski's were on when they made that but whatever they were, they can't have been the good stuff. LOL I've only seen the trailer for it, and even that really turned me off. I thought that looked really terrible. But Hollywood really can make a lot of things horrible when transitioning them to movies. Case in point: the Super Mario Bros movie. What the heck was that? Another anime topic - Are any of you Studio Ghibli fans? Was curious if anyone's gonna try to see From Up on Poppy Hill when it gets its US theatrical run. I would if I was still in the US. I'll probably buy it when it comes out to BluRay/DVD (Japanese version is out and has English subs, but US BluRays/DVDs are cheaper, so I'm waiting) because I've heard it's really good. baldylox Posted February 3, 2013 OH YES! I'm a huge Ghibli fan, I have all their US released movies on DVD or Bluray. I've been a fan ever since I was introduced to them with Princess Mononoke. You did not just bring that up... I shamefully admit that Raven bought that dang thing on DVD. I watched it the first time because I had no idea what it was. I watched it the second time trying to figure out WTF it was. Never. Again. Another anime topic - Are any of you Studio Ghibli fans? Heck yah! Although I tend to stick with the more girly ones like Howl's, The Cat Returns, Kiki's, Spirited Away, and Ponyo. All I can say is the art style is pure love, making the stories just the icing on the cake. My Neighbors the Yamadas still cracks me up though. ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram

Ravendruid Posted February 3, 2013 But Hollywood really can make a lot of things horrible when transitioning them to movies. Case in point: the Super Mario Bros movie. What the heck was that? Am I the only person who loved that movie? Yes it was strange, the acting was horrible, and it really twisted the whole premise of the game, but for me it definately falls into the "so bad its awesome" category. It's like watching a train wreck, but you know there are no people left on the train, and all of the cars are filled with different colors of paint. You know it should be a tragedy, but it just ends up being this huge, wonderfully colorful, mess all over the place (but then again, I'm one of those who will watch MST3K and then try to track down the movies they're making fun of). I'm a huge Ghibli fan, but it doesn't look like this will be coming out anywhere near where I live. Probably the closest will be Seattle, which is still some 300 miles, over two mountain passes. A very long walk. I'm looking forward to the DVD release, though. (And thanks for the reminder, I still need to pick up Arrietty). AS for what I'm currently watching, since I have M.O.M.O. pre-ordered, I decided it's finally time to start watching Xenosaga. Only on EP 3, but so far it's pretty good, fairly typical fighting in space with powered suits, but there's nothing at all wrong with that in my book. I don't understand why Volks went with a DDS instead of an MDD for MOMO, however. The height of the MDD looks much more appropriate. Are they just afraid of releasing MDDs as limiteds for some reason? I still haven't played the games so I have no idea how it compares to those. Absolutely loved From Up on Poppy Hill. Saw it at the cinemas here in September last year. It has a really cool, wistful feeling to it, very much like a reminiscence of a cherished time. They run a little anime film festival here every couple of years. We even got an advanced screening of Redline a few years back XD I've loved every Ghibli movie I've ever seen, my favourites are Mononoke and Kiki. The only one I've seen that I've never watched again was Grave of the Fireflies, but that's because it's such heavy, serious material. Now with +/- 15% more uncertainty! Misheru Posted February 5, 2013 Regarding M.O.M.O. - her DD version is taken from the 3rd Xenosaga game and in that one she has matured into a young teen (age 14/15 in the storyline). She is few years older than she is when the story begins. I think that is why they went with the DDS over MDD. and to Billy - I just saw the latest episode of Love Live! and their new character, Nico, reminded me so much of Sprout that I was dying laughing. ~ ❥ Misheru...the *M* in H&M House of Vinyl ❥ ~ ℒℴѵℯ❤ ( ͒ ु•·̫• ू ͒) ˚₊✩‧ All your dolliehs are belong to us! ✩‧₊˚ ( ͒ ु•·̫• ू ͒)
