What Anime are you watching?

Recommended Posts

Monty

If you guys liked Interviews with Monster Girls you might want to check out A Centaur's Life, which just started the other day. It's got a similar laid back feel, although with a lot more world-building. I'm a fan of the manga but I'd actually been kinda wary about the anime due to the studio and was expecting a bad adaptation. However I'm actually pleasantly surprised so far.

I dont think going dark 'doesn't suit' made in Abyss. There's quite a few things in the first episode that foreshadow more sinister/terrible things to come. Plus it's hard for me to be surpised at crouching cuteness hidden horror when a word like 'Abyss' is in the title.

Re-watching Zero no Tsukaima for the 10th time since 2007.... never gets old

I had started that once early this year, got maybe 3 episodes in and stopped to watch current shows. I need to get back to it.

Right now I'm watching several. The top three in no particular order I'm enjoying are Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni., Gamers!, and Tenshi no 3P!.

I re-watched ( I had begun the series when I went to Japan, watched 8 of the 13 episodes on plane rides to and from ) Kobayashi's Dragon Maid last week and just love it. I do hope we get another season but I haven't heard anything on it. There's just so much to like about this show.

And I just started to watch "My Hero Academia". I got 3 episodes in and I'm enjoying it so far. It's an odd setup but the characters and action are quite fun.

hmm... this time I found myself in a bit of a pickle after reading a preview article on Koe no katachi, A shape of voice, or

as its officially translated and went about seeing it, and ... well... I havent been quite as obsessed about an anime in this way for some time now ... Im now contemplating about importing the bluray from japan, just so to get it before its official western disc release, I want the soundtrack, and get and read the manga to maybe get resolution to some bits I felt the anime left a bit too vague...

It looks like any other kyoto animation thing, the plot is way too reliant on the abundant goodness of some people, also has some deus ex machina's, but... even though this is as rooted to the ground as can be, it is probably one of the all time greats that company has done.

And voice talent is just spot on, its hard to believe its Aoi "Madoka" Yuki playing the little sister, and Satsuki Yukino feels perfect as the ever understanding mother after just hearing her wrangle a certain Sagara souske in Full metal panic that I recently binged in full. But Saori Hayami with what little lines she has, probably steals the show with her perfomance as Shouko

In other news ... added the remainder of Higurashi no naku koro ni, Owarimonogatari, is this a zombie S1&2, and chaika coffin princess S2, to the ever growing disc release backlog ... in stream side of things, Gamers, otherworld smartphone, my first is a gal, idiot girl, and naturally New Game S2, and something im probably forgetting... quite slim pickings on crunchy europe this season.

I love Chaika, although S2 wasn't as good as S1, but I still enjoyed it. Just finished watching the most recent ep of Gamers! Holy Cow! It's hilarious. I dumped 1st is a Gal after the 1st episode. If they were to tell the story without all the needless fanservice I'd enjoy it. Not that fanservice is bad, I do enjoy some, but the way it's being presented just seems for show and in bad taste IMHO. I'm still watching smartphone, New Game S2, Aho girl and the others I mentioned before.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been bumped in awhile... I was wondering can anyone recommend me some good recent anime? I have had the worse time keeping up with it lately. Work and all. Thanks!

Let's see, the last series I watched and LOVED was "Kakegurui". It's about a high school where gambling is what determines your social status and life outcome after school. The games they play are super cool, the action is intense and the facial expressions of these characters when they win or lose is absolutely hilarious. They contort and twist around to show the horrible sides of humanity and it's so much fun. I highly recommend this show.

I just started "Princess Principal" and it's pretty fun too. It's about an all girl group of spies in Old London ( Victorian times in an alt universe ) and the twists and turns in the story are cool and interesting. I have 3 more episodes to go, it's a 12 ep series.

I've heard all sorts of things about "Made in Abyss" but I'm kind of wary about watching it. On the plus side, everyone says it's a gorgeous series with amazing visuals. The characters are also supposed to be really good and so is the story. The problem for me comes in that I've read that in the last few episodes, some truly terrible things happen and I'm not sure I want to get invested in them only to see them get into something really bad at the end. But like I said, everyone has said that it's a great show so I'll probably break down and watch it sometime soon anyway.

And lastly, for a really fun and silly show, I watched "Aho Girl" and it was great. "Aho" means stupid in Japanese so of course, the main character is a dummy. A super dummy really. But she's hilarious to watch and so are her friends. The episodes are rather short and there's only 13 episodes so it's a quick marathon to watch them all. If you want some silly laughs, definitely check that one out.

Thank you for the suggestions, Billy. I'll definitely have to watch some of these. "Aho Girl" sounds perfect for me. I really need some comedic relief!

Kind of forget about this thread. The ones Billy posted are last season, but I enjoyed Aho Girl and Princess Principal. Made in Abyss is full of the feels at the end, so watch out for the ninja cutting onions nearby. But it was really good. Almost Clannad good. I've seen at least two of Kakegurui, but the it really wasn't my type. It's still in my bookmark folder so I may gt around to watching the rest of it on a lean season. Here are the ones I'm watching from this season in no particular order in addition to a bunch of older ones from my back catalog that I won't bother to list:

Konohana Kitan - Cute nekomimi girls, a feel good slice of life anime.

Girls' Last Tour - A couple friends driving around after the world ends, but somehow also a chicken soup slice of life show.

Land of the Lustrous - It's CG, but I really don't notice. If you liked Flip Flappers, you should enjoy this too.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie - A NEET by recent choice 30 something lady is finding out that the people in her MMO also cross her path in RL.

Just Because! - A slice of life drama. The wife seems to enjoy it. It's okay, probably would skip it if it wasn't something we watch together.

Himōto! Umaru-chan R - 2nd season of Umaru! A comedy, but I don't find it as good as the 1st season, but still enjoy it.

Anime-Gataris - Slice of life comedy about making a HS anime club. It's good for laughs.

Blend-S - If you liked Working, you'll like this too.

A Sister's All You Need - Guilty pleasure. I'll admit I seem to enjoy these imouto animes.

URAHARA - Not sure why I keep watching this one. It's on the artistic and out of norms side like Flip Flappers and Land of the Lustrous. Perhaps that's why I keep watching, it's something different and fresh visually.

the current euro-crunchy setting is quite slim pickings if im honest, but some semi interesting items are there...

Konohana kitan, as sinclair already mentioned. Hanasaku iroha with fox ears, and not quite as strict a head figure, and set in the spirit world ... also amusingly has the same voice acress that did Shinji in evangelion as the "head wolf", or manager. Latest episode (while writing this) should appeal to doll enthusiasts too.

Two car, absurd girls high school sidecar racing series, but makes up with fun banter between the two leads, while solving issues with their rivals

Imouto sae ireba, a bit on the kinky side on occasion, but generally fun peek at what its like to be a light novel author ... interestingly doesent show on crunchy's playstation app, but does on the android and web..

Anime gataris, which I think is a bit stiff version of Genshiken, with carbon copy scenes out of various scenes music included like the bunny outfits from haruhi suzumiya.

Anchient magus bride is probably the only real gem in the lineup for me, which is slow going, but the initial grim setting unfolding is enchanting.

Also forgot to mention Fox spirit matchmaker that continued from last season, which production qualities are random at best, for more or less obvious reasons, but it has its moments especially with the spider lady's past, and wouldnt mind making a doll copy of Tohsan Koko at the moment.

The physical disc pile is alarmingly again growing in size instead of diminishing, with Black bullet (well, this went dark a bit fast), brynhildr in the darkness (What did you expect from the creator of Elfen lied?), a Scientific Railgun (Rina satou at her best, although this gets a bit dark too with the sisters), and a Magical Index which I havent actually seen before, despite liking the Railgun side quite a lot...

Also a physical copy of A Silent voice arriving next week along with In this corner of the world.

I haven't had much time for anime since I started my new job a while back so I'm trying to get caught up on some popular ones.

My Hero Academia, Sword Art Online, and ReZero are the ones I'm watching now.

Oh, and RWBY. I'm always watching RWBY. Season 5 is really good so far.

Bumping for the new season!

-- I LOVE POP TEAM EPIC SO MUCH YOU GUYS. I know the surreal humor isn't for everyone, but I was hooked when I started reading the manga a year ago and I'm so happy the anime keeps the weirdness intact.

-- Devilman Crybaby was fantastic! Bleak as heck and the imagery can get very over-the-top with the TV-MA rating (if you're not into that sort of thing) but overall a great story, awesome music and gorgeous animation.

-- I watched the first episode of DARLING in the FRANXX and I was kind of anticipating more since Studio Trigger is involved, but I wasn't impressed. :T I'll give it a bit before I decide if I want to continue.

I also have Sanrio Boys, Ito Junji Collection and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card on my watch list

I've been trying to catch up on my anime lately but I've only gotten a few series watched from last season.

Fate Apocrypha was decent with it's fights but overall, I found it way less interesting than Fate Zero was or the original series. Sure, Mordred and her master were really fun and interesting as were a few of the other servants. But the story was bland and the whole team thing just didn't work out well in my opinion. But it was nice to see Jeanne De Arc in motion, she was cool to watch most of the time.

Inuyashiki was a really odd show at first but it intrigued me with it's premise and how things unfolded for the story. It had some slow points in it but they weren't a reason to stop watching. Some of the CGI stuff looked kind of "off" and was distracting at times but I see why they used it when they did. Overall it was pretty good.

Blend-S was an amazing show, full of cool characters and tons of humor. The main characters were super fun to watch and I laughed every episode. It's been done before so nothing really new here but I really enjoyed the show and how the people in it interacted with others. I'd definitely recommend this one and I'll also watch it again when I need a pick-me-up.

I'm watching a ton, this season has sooo many I want to see. But I just started the new Cardcaptor, and oh boy!! This will be the best of the season for sure. All the original magic is still there. It doesn't feel like it's been 20 years at all.

@Baldylox I agree about Fate/Apocrypha! It's fun as a 'popcorn series' but I wouldn't advise anyone to go into it expecting any complexity. Most of the fun comes from seeing how many new rules they can introduce for the sake of breaking them. That and Shakespeare. Shakespeare is the best.

I havent really had time to watch anything this new season yet but I'm glad CCSakura is so good after how much I hated Sailor Moon Crystal (the fact that its a sequel and not a reboot does help though). I havent managed to read any of the Clear Card manga so the material is completely new to me, but they really did nail the feeling from the original series. It seems so seamless that at first you barely even notice that they're using smartphones and Kero has a wireless game controller.

Now that 2017 has finished I can safely say Made in Abyss and Hoseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) were my top shows of the year. I was already a fan of the HnK manga but I never knew it was that popular, so I was surprised and pleased that it got an anime adaptation and I'm glad it was such a good one. I have a lot of nitpicks about the anime version though, mostly because while the gems are genderless beings and appear a lot more male in the manga (they're also coded more male than female, using male first and third person pronouns and calling eachother 'brother'), in the anime they really did moeafy everyone and ended up making them all too feminine, especially the voices, which really threw me off at first since I was so used to the manga. (although Romi Park as Padparadscha is A++++++). They might have did this to sell the show better, but I guess it worked? It was really popular so hopefully it'll get a second season and I can get a Phos nendoroid. I recommend it if you want to see something unique, it's also probably the only use of CGI in an anime I can think of that didn't look really awkward to me.

Good explanation!

That and Shakespeare. Shakespeare is the best.

WHAT??? Please tell me you're joking. If you're serious, I have lost all faith in you as a friend.

I absolutely DESPISED his character. He was nothing but annoying, lazy, stupid, useless and had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Oh boy! His attack is throwing paper at you! And TALKING YOU TO DEATH. HE NEVER SHUT UP. Seriously, The Paper from R.O.D. was way more dangerous and smart and cool than this idiot ever could have been.

Worst Fate character ever. EVER.

I feel better now. Carry on.

EXCUSE YOU MR BALDYLOX, he is a fabulous dramaqueen and I will not hear a word against him. >:C

(Also, you gotta admit he was pretty smart. No point getting involved when you get to be a spectator in such a 'great story', although the poor guy probably wishes he could have been a spectator in a better Fate series...)
