Juu-Yuki's Repair Corner- Lily's Wig

DSC_1536_zpscce7f360.jpg

Hello, everyone. A snow storm recently hit Toronto and I was stuck indoors. Luckily, something came in the mail for Lily and I. I got the wig second hand from a nice seller here on the forums. Like most Lily wigs, it is very fragile, yet a very expensive wig. I was very lucky to find a damaged one for a very good price. Here goes nothing. Today, I am going to show you how I fixed Lily's default wig.

DSC_1528_zps1b9a2daa.jpg

This is my lovely assistant Lily, all dressed up for the cold weather here in Canada. She will be helping us with the repair project. The wig will be for her anyways .

DSC_1538_zps0c06f128.jpg

Wig right out of the package. Included everything from wig to wig nets.

DSC_1552_zps7ebf69ad.jpg

I normally put a wig cap on my girls during all my wig customizing/ repair sessions. However, Lily's wig is very tight so it does not need a wig cap. Carefully put on the wig, starting from the front and pulling on the back, from the base.

DSC_1554_zps230b3037.jpg

Time to clip up the side fridges so they don't get in the way.

DSC_1559_zpscfb065bf.jpg

Next you will need one of these, a rubber hair tie. They come in many different colours and you can get them from the dollar store. I will be using a transparent one. You might also be needing gloves for later.

DSC_1558_zpse8c9e4c5.jpg

Now, grab all of the remaining hair and tie it up into a ponytail. Try to make it as clean as possible while getting all the loose ends. This is the hardest part of the repair because there is almost nothing to grab onto. Be patient with it, it took me 5-6 tries before I got fed up. lol

DSC_1563_zpsc72ab8ce.jpg

Doesn't look too bad.

ONWARDS TO THE NEXT STEP!

DSC_1564_zpsbdbff026.jpg

This step is optional really. I am not responsible if you do decide to try this on your wigs.

I mixed up some PVA glue in order to maintain some of the frizz. This won't damage the wig and you can always wash it off with water later.

DSC_1565_zps9af709b8.jpg

Paint on the mixture with a sturdy brush. Remember to wash the brush off right away when you are done. I am using an old brush that I won't be needing anymore. It will help to use a stiffer brush.

DSC_1567_zps20402d3c.jpg

Now, even with a stiffer brush the hair might stick together and form one giant block with no texture. Grab a dry brush. I will be using this old paint brush. Start buffing the wig in the direction of hair growth.

DSC_1568_zps454c9946.jpg

While that is drying, I will be working on that stump. Apply some silicon. This will give something for the ponytail to grab onto. Make sure to get ALL of the hairs, even the hairs down in the middle of the stump. Let that dry completely.

DSC_1569_zpsbd24ed0e.jpg

Time to work on the ponytail. Trim off whatever is in the hole and tidy up some of the loose strands.

DSC_1576_zps4b0bb9e1.jpg

The hole is a bit small and in order to get a good fit I had to cut it open. Snip Snip~

DSC_1577_zps7499f64a.jpg

Grab your needle and tread and start sewing from the side. Cap the ponytail over the dried stump and start closing off the hole as tightly as you can.

DSC_1578_zps6a27ec77.jpg

Try to wrap the extra thread around the tail for some extra grip.

DSC_1587_zpsc88bc0e4.jpg

Looks pretty good

The ponytail is a lot stronger now. You can pull in the ponytail and it wouldn't budge, but I would still recommend that you take extra caution when putting the wig on a doll.

DSC_1583_zpse9a5a6e3.jpg

Lets work on that bow.

I will be making a few interchangeable ones for Lily, as well as enhancing her default one. Start by making a pattern of her original. This will help you get the scale right, you can always making it bigger or smaller later.

DSC_1591_zps165b9375.jpg

Couple of hours later~ voila~ some bows . My sewing skills aren't the best but it will do for now.

DSC_1582_zps4c4a2610.jpg

Lily's default bow got an upgrade. I added some mini black snap buttons to them so I can change them out whenever I feel like it.

DSC_1593_zps43934c6b.jpg

DSC_1594_zps18a20a07.jpg

She looks so adorable with her original wig. The price was such a steal!

DSC_1598_zpse305b727.jpg

DSC_1607_zpsba896a86.jpg

Here is the white one. I decided to use something different, a more meshy material.

DSC_1613_zps6009e0b0.jpg

DSC_1610_zpsed1addd6.jpg

Annnnnnnd~ The red one.

DSC_1615_zps5d7d32fe.jpg

Tried something new with this one. Used little hooks. Mini snap buttons and hooks both work just fine. So it comes down to preference and how easy it is to get.

DSC_1617_zps612fb2fa.jpg

If you don't want to sew bows than you can tie on a nice ribbon.

Lily's wig is definitely very beautiful but with the way that Volks made it, it's very fragile. I think the repair defiantly made it a lot stronger and maybe even better than the original. I am not encouraging you guys to all run off and rip off your Lily ponytails. But if it's already damaged than why not take a risk and try to fix it.

That is it for today~ Feel free to leave your comment and suggestion below. Let me know if you have any tips that you want to share with everyone.

Great job on this!

I love the tutorial and the bonus bow lesson at the end.

I've had a broken Lily wig sitting around for a long time (Of course my mother took up the challenge herself to fix it too but everything she touches breaks even further...sigh.) But the part I have trouble with is the tying. Mine it's just simply too short to tie, and I've got really tiny hands.

However if my newer wig breaks, I know what to do now!

I didn't manage to fix the old wig in the end since my mother has broken it permanently like she always does... (She means well so I can't get mad at her, ever.)

But she sewed the tail into the head and cut it and everything, it's all messed up. Haha...

Can I request a pattern for the bows?

Where to attach the snap-ins and hooks? You're amazing!

What's PVA glue?

Poly-vinyl acetate. It's a kind of plastic rubber compound, commonly used in glues for wood and fabrics.

Now with +/- 15% more uncertainty!
