Touching Dollfie Dreams

Recommended Posts

Lita_Blanchimont

I have recently been looking into buying a dollfie dream, and a lot of people have said not to touch their faces or bodies, as it can stain them. If I were to wash my hands prior to touching them, would she still stain? And how easily do Dollfies stain (to the touch)

Washing your hands would be perfectly fine. You should handle them, that's part of the joy of having them. They -can- stain, but not -that- easily. It's usually from dark clothes and dark thread or if you have something on your hands that could leave a mark like paint, dirt, ink etc. So just make sure your hands are clean and be careful with dark clothes and you'll be fine. You should enjoy playing with them not fear them. And this is coming from probably one of the more cautious DD owners.

Thank you!

I was just kinda paranoid about handling them, I don't want to dish out $600 on a doll for me ruin by touching them with mucky paws XD I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry!

I think this is a bigger issue with resin BJDs than it is with DDs. It is really important to not touch your BJDs with dirty hands (and to touch their face-ups as little as humanly possible), because you can cause the resin to yellow or discolor. The face-ups can also rub off or get stained from oil/dirt on your fingers.

But DDs are much studier in my experience. DDs might stain more easily from clothing, but my resin girls pick up a LOT more dirt from being handled than my DD girls do.

Wait, wait, handling resin dolls doesn't make them yellow... Resin yellows from UV rays and natural oxidization. Resin is easy to clean off if it does get dirty or stained, in my experience.

I touch and hold my DDs everyday and take no special precautions except to avoid dark cotton fabric fashions.

They are not that fragile.

Most people say to be careful with painted faceups and not touch the face where the faceup is to avoid fading or wearing off the faceup. I agree that DDs are very sturdy and you shouldn't worry about handling them. As Averis and Misheru said, handling them is part of the joy. The only thing I can think of besides staining risk is that oils, even natural ones in your skin, can deposit on the vinyl and make it shiny. I think that may take a very long time to see though.

P.S. I inferred from Misheru's statement that she enjoys handling them since she is doing it everyday.

Oil can actually stain resin and make it look yellow, which is why you're always warned to never use oil-based materials for face-ups. Enough finger oil over a long enough period can do the same thing -- I've got a second-hand girl from 2006 and this was definitely an issue for her, more so than yellowing from UV. Took a ton of elbow grease to remove it. (Altho it might be a company-specific issue, as her resin is also very porous, so YMMV.)

My biggest issue is that I smoke... *although I do not smoke in the house, and wash/scrub my hands before I touch the kiddos... * (and, thanks to the e-cig thing, I've cut down drastically!)

Otherwise, a fair cleaning with a warm, wet cloth (with or without a bit of mild detergent) has worked ok after any meet or shoot I've done....

Indeed I do and I agree about being careful with painted faceups, especially custom ones. I am careful on paint/blushing as it can fade or rub over time. But then I don't carry my dollies around by the head.

I just recall being scared to do anything with my dolls when I first began collecting due to staining horror stories. Then a friend told me that a doll is never truly yours until she gets her first stain. He called it a 'love mark'. I found that it was true. I am not the type to leave a figure in the box or a magazine in teh wrapping. If I can take it out and play with it, then what is the purpose (IMHO)?

Everyone has their own style, that is just mine. But I digress, my apologies.

summary - DDs are surprisingly resilient and easier cleaned that many think.

Really, the main thing you have to worry about as far as touching goes is the faceup. Volks' faceups are pretty darn solid and hard to remove, but you should still avoid touching it. If it has a custom faceup, then you really want to avoid touching it, since it's much easier to remove.

As long as your hands are clean though, it's no problems touching the vinyl of the rest of the doll. You're much, much, much more likely to get stains from dark clothes than you are from touching it.

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

As others have said, the DD bodies can take quite a bit of handling without getting stained or damaged. As anyone who follows my girls photo stories will know, my girls are NOT indoor only and they go all over the place with me. They go to parks, farms, the woods and all sorts of doll meets. And yes, they sometimes fall over into the grass or dirt. But so far, everything has wiped off easily with a damp cloth or magic eraser.

Anything that has stained my girls has come off with Oxy10 treatments. It takes more time than Remove-Zit to work but I think it tends to be safer overall.

I also make sure that before I mess with my girls, I always wash my hands just to be safe. So far, I've had no issues with them at all. So don't worry too much about staining from just messing around with them or changing their clothing..... as people said before, half the fun of owning a DD is playing around with them and dressing them up.

As long as your hands are clean then touching their faces is just fine! If they wear dark clothes without a body stocking then there is a better chance of staining, but slight staining depending on how dark the clothes are, hope that helps

I have sweaty hands from time to time so I just wash them and let them dry before I touch Saber. Regardless though I always wash my hands before I handle her. My mom gave me some gloves because she knows about my hands sweating but when I put them on I just wasn't connecting with Saber the same. So I rather wash and wait.

The only thing that bothers me is that I use my iPhone to take pictures and phones carry a lot of dirt and germs. So even if I wash my hands and then take photos something is going to get on her, I guess, but nothing that can be seen. She does have on light blackish grey stain on the back on her leg...no idea where it came from.....plan to remove it with a magic eraser, hope it works.

I handle Yuriko at least daily. I do take care with her face, but I don't completely avoid it. I just make sure my hands aren't dirty or greasy, and don't have her too close when I'm eating, but other than that I'm not especially cautious with her. She has gotten minorly dirty on occasion, especially when we had her outside, but nothing that hasn't washed off easily. Honestly, being able to touch them is the biggest reason why I went for DDs instead of resins. If she couldn't handle a bit of regular use I never would have gotten her at all.

The only thing I would suggest if you want to handle your doll regularly is to just give her a bath with a magic eraser from time to time because they do build up grime and dirt on their skin. It keeps them nice and new looking

Check out aquilla429's interesting thread about what happens to a DD after seven hears of handling!

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5119

I got my DDII white body second hand, and it was definitely a bit grubby just from handling and two previous owners. But she has cleaned up fairly well! I took her apart as much as I could (since I couldn't find my hair dryer) and cleaned her vinyl parts in warm water with just a little dish detergent in it. I scrubbed her with one of those facial buffing pads. For tougher spots, I used the magic eraser.

Touching doll faces is always a no-no. It's to be avoided as much as possible regardless of how clean your hands are. >_<
