Does Jewelry stain?

Recommended Posts

Crystaltiger

This question has been on my mind for a while now. I want to get Saber a cute 'S' necklace, like the ones you see in the little boxes on the tables at JCPenny and Macy's but I'm scared it would yellow or stain her neck. I've seen some pictures of dolls with these necklaces on but I always seem to see yellow where the necklace is. It's probably because of the light, or my imagination. lol Can I just buy the necklace and put it on her? what type of chain material is best when making one for a doll? Sterling silver? and what about the charms or necklace 'centerpieces' that you can buy from craft stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby?

Thanks for your help.

Gold, silver and platinum are generally non reactive. It's why we make jewellery, and regard them as being highly valuable, so they shouldn't stain. However, whether or not that holds true depends on the purity of the alloy used in the chain. An expensive gold chain will be very pure, and should be non-reactive, while cheaper chains may oxidise(rust) a little bit.

However, all metals will build up dirt and oils from handling (like anything else) and small chain links are hard to clean, so staining could be possible if the chain is dirty.

So, use high purity non-reactive metals and keep them clean, and you should be fine.

Now with +/- 15% more uncertainty!

I make my girls jewelry and I only use silver charms and chains due to staining concerns. I've seen cheaply plated gold charms and chains leave stains on DD's necks, wrists and hands. I've also seen some cheap brass looking chains and pendants leave marks on the girls. So you need to be careful when choosing things as jewelry for them.

As I said, I make my necklaces and bracelets only using silver and so far I have had ZERO stains incurred by them. I buy almost all of my stuff from Michaels and A.C.Moores craft stores.

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

I see, thanks for the tips.

Yeah the 'Gold' was my main concern, so I'll stay away from that. I had a feeling silver would be the best choice. Off to Michaels I go!! Thanks for the tips.

I made a necklace for one of my girls using black plated metal chain. I got it from Michael's. I can't say that everything out there is safe, but I've left that black chain on for extended periods of time, and didn't see a single mark. I have a similar one in "copper" plating that I have also never gotten marks from. The plating needs to be good quality- if it makes marks on your skin, it will on the DDs'.

I'm not sure what environmental conditions it's been in over the years, but the Sanjie doll in the Tachikawa showroom's glass case has become stained from the metal jewelry in her default outfit. I was a bit surprised, since I figured metal wouldn't stain at all. But I guess it can, if given enough years to oxidize and stay in one place.

I guess it depends on the metal. My Beato worn a inox steel necklace for over 5 months, and it didn't stain at all.
