XOHimitsuOX Posted January 5, 2013 I was debating whether to get the coolcats thigh stand, since it has been praised as a good stand. But doesn't solve the problem where i'll be placing them. On a metal shelf, the type made with rods of metal welded together. Which aren't completely flat and the small coolcats stand will rock a bit if the shelf gets nudged. Also sometime i'll like to pose them with wider stances, plus i wanted a flat surface to cover the shelf so nothing small falls through the shelf. Time to make something with my D.I.Y skills, acrylic sheet, aluminium rods, screws and styrene. This is what i made. Finally i came up with a simple solution... garden wire. Plus it will be well hidden. Also the the white part is removable, so i can make a different part if i wanted to. Traveller Posted January 5, 2013 This is very interesting to me, as stands are some I do not have for my 11 girls, but have thought about the cooL-cats version as well as the Dollfie World version Would be interested in the size of the poles, what you used for the white plastic and the most important thing of all, the thickness of the base Was the base Pre-cut and all you had to do was drill a hole for the poles and how were they screwed in? You make it sound so easy I had to cut everything from raw materials. The base was cut from a large sheet of acrylic 2.5mm thickness. I bought this thickness cos i was originally thinking of making sheets for the shelf. I hate cutting acrylic, cos it's god damn hard to do without any large power tools. I used a scriber to score the acrylic and snapped it off. I'll will get something thicker than that if you want something more ridged. Hmm.. how was they screwed in... I used anchor sleeve bolts. The diameter of the poles doesn't really matter, as long as you get an anchor sleeve bolt that fits in the base pole. To get the small screws in to the poles, i drilled a 2mm hole and used a m2.6 tap to cut the threads for m2.6 screws. The white plastic is styrene, available at most hobby shops in all sorts of shapes and sizes.
OhnoRaptors Posted January 10, 2013 Nice! I have been holding off on getting a stand because I keep saying "well I could just make one myself", but have been putting it off. Now I feel more motivated to do it.
XOHimitsuOX Posted January 10, 2013 I had enough materials left over to make another twin stand and a single stand, while still costing less than a normal retail stand.

mangaemi Posted January 13, 2013 Yes! Love this! I've wondered about making my own stands too.. and seeing this I might just have to do it If you're wondering where you can get acrylic from, some sign shops will sell you the material cut to whatever size/thickness you need (they can usually go up to an inch thick, at least in the places I've worked). I wonder if they'd even have them at hardware stores like Home Depot? XOHimitsuOX Posted January 13, 2013 I've been using 2.5mm acrylic and it flexes a bit. But since those twin stands are staying on the shelf, it doesn't matter much. I got some 5.5mm acrylic and it's a lot more rigged, i'm current making a single stand and testing out some ideas on it. I will revel it when its done
OldMagician Posted December 26, 2013 Thanks for the great idea. Looked at your other stand as well and was very inspired. A tip to smooth rough edges after cutting acrylic sheets is to use a heat gun, also help to mend smaller cracks and when/if you need to bend the sheets. I am experimenting with a self-tightening catch loop using a spring inside the rod, so far not quite successful, but I'm working on it.
